Alpinestars SMX-1 R Vented Boots

Riding a sport bike in tennis shoes is not always the best, safest or most comfortable way to ride, but then again neither is wearing a full race boot. To split the difference the Alpinestars SMX-1 R Vented Boots are designed to bridge the gap, blending the protection and features found in Alpinestars' race boots with a low-top design that is comfortable and easy to wear. Constructed from a lightweight and abrasion-resistant microfiber upper and is reinforced with strategically positioned TPU protectors the SMX-1 R features an evolutionary new rubber compound sole with superior grip patterning for excellent grip both on and off the bike, while the accordion flex zones give support and control regardless of your riding position.

Features:

  • Main upper constructed from an advanced microfiber for comfort, durability and excellent abrasion resistance
  • Perforated medial, lateral and toe panels for superb ventilation
  • Innovative heel counter support system, which works in conjunction with strap closure to offer improved fit and support as well as structural integrity
  • Rear of heel counter has been redesigned with soft TPR insert which works seamlessly with rear flex zone to allow for greater freedom of ankle movement and comfort on the bike’s controls, plus durable TPR shift pad
  • Ergonomic new boot shaping for forefoot streamlining which offers wide-ranging foot profile, fit and comfort
  • Newly designed TPR medial and lateral side protection offers excellent abrasion resistance and durability
  • Evolved closure strap which is anatomically angled to follow natural shape of rider’s instep
  • Alpinestars exclusive compound rubber sole with newly designed grip patterning to promote improved feel and grip, water dispersion and durability
  • Instep and Achilles’ accordion flex zones constructed from lightweight microfiber for optimized levels of durability, comfort and maneuverability on and off the bike
  • Front VELCRO® brand closures offer a quick and secure fit over the instep area while permitting excellent levels of flex Strap features TPR puller for ease of use
  • Medial zip closure ensures convenient in and out; zip is covered with VELCRO® brand closures and microfiber flap to protect bike from scratches
  • Double density ankle protector on medial side layered under the upper offers protective performance and abrasion resistance in key area
  • Integrated, replaceable bi-injected TPU forefoot slider features new easy-screw fixing concept for quicker and easier replacement
  • External, high modulus TPU heel counter, lateral ankle and shift pad for improved shock protection and durability
  • Internal toe box protection is layered under the upper for durability, improved feel and performance

Crash Tested!
This boot saved my foot. Hit a rock at 30 mph with the toe of this boot. My foot and boot got "squished" between the rock and the foot peg. The impact was intense enough it broke the mounting plate of the foot peg in half. My foot would have been mush with regular shoes. But with this boot on, I just have bruised toes.

Not a mark on the foot peg. The peg itself did not hit the rock. It was entirely energy transferred through the boot and foot.

Also, they are comfortable shoes. At least as comfortable as it can be with a stiff sole. (The stiff sole and reinforced toe box will save your foot) It is easy to shift and brake with these shoes. They look sharp. I highly recommend you get some. And if not these, get something just like them. They can save your foot. I am a believer.

An upgrade to an already great boot but sizes run very large.
I bought these to replace my 3 year old SMX-1 boots that were awesome but were too big. I saw that the upgraded R version of them just came out so I bought them in one size down but they were still too big. I didn't want to make the same mistake again so I returned them for an even smaller size. Revzilla made the return easy. The boots look great (I love the new color scheme options), feel high quality, and seem protective. If you liked the old SMX 1 boots you will love these. Just make sure you order a full size down from your normal sneaker size. I'm normally a 8.5-9 sneaker size but I had to order a size 41(US 7.5) to get a proper fit.

Good boot if you get it sized right
I like the boots...My only issue is that there's really no way to tighten around the upper ankle. Once you zip up the side that's it. So even though the foot size is correct the upper portion of the boot feels loose. It could really use an upper strap to tighten that area

Finally got the new SMX-1 Boots!
After waiting and waiting the finally came out and the wait was worth it! The look and air flow of the boot is great! They are a little more stiff then I expected, but I have only worn them for a short period. I wear 11.5 in boots so I bought the size 46, and their a little big but still work for me. Overall an awesome look, and seem to be very well made, as all alpinestar products are! See ya time to RIDE!!

Excellent short boot
I have full height TCX waterproof sport/track boots that are just too hot on a summer casual ride. I researched short and perforated boots online and tried on a number in person before I selected these. I wanted a boot that is comfortable to walk in and that does not have laces. These are brand new so my review is based on initial impressions after a 150 mile ride here in the heavily trafficked NYC metro area. VERY comfortable with almost no break-in and the size is spot on for 9.5 US 43 Euro. Good airflow through mesh tongue and good breathability through perforations. Quality seems high and the durability should be good. Glad I selected these.

Boots won't get tight
I wear a size 8.5 normally but had to get size 7.5 and these boots won't tighten around my foot, I feel as if they will come off in a crash, if your feet don't fit just right there is no tightening adjustment in these Boots.

Great boots, would buy again
First time buying Italian boots - I'm coming from similar street style boots (AXO Striker) that went up to around the ankle.

I wear a size US 13 and have decently wide feet. That being said, I went for size 48 EU which equates into about a 12.5.

These boots still felt a little big - difficult to gauge as the next size down might have cramped my toes. I can live with this by wearing slightly thicker socks but honestly I don't mind and the boots do fit well enough.

The draft is definitely there - even more so as the lower shin area of this boot is not very tight around the leg - something pointed out in the review video. If you're after race-centric style boots that go nice and tight around your shin then you should look elsewhere.

This is worth pointing out especially due to the fact that the lateral velcro strap really isn't much by way of support - the majority comes from the side zipper, which if you've already got a looser fit isn't going to help much.

It will be interesting to see what kind of warmth these boots keep into the cooler months - as there's a ton of airflow currently and double so due to the loose fit just above the ankle.

All and all I would buy these boots again. They're very stylish and the feel on the pegs / concrete is leaps and bounds better than my previous boots. The tactile feel is the best I've felt in a riding boot hands down!

Good Air Flow
I wear a size 13 usually, the 48 fit perfectly so they run big. The best thing about these is the air flow. I wear leather boots all day and can't wait to get on the road and get some air moving through these things, it cools off your feet instantly. The have really nice solid side to side ankle support while allowing free motion up/down for foot controls. I couldn't wear them all day at work as the heel is very sturdy and does not allow for flex in the sole (kinda the point), but overall these things are great, I am very pleased with this purchase.

Great boot once you get the right size
The features of this boot at this price level are great. It seems to offer a lot of protection and is comfortable while walking around. Two problems... the top of the boot doesn't have a strap to get a secure fit, so it is a little loose at the top. Also, these run very big. I wear a 12.5 sneaker and 12 work boot, and had to order a 46.

Overall, the drawbacks don't stop me from really liking the boot.

I need a vented boot I can wear in the summer months and still be able to walk around comfortably. The video review really spelled out the features (Anthony always does), and I think I might even get away with wearing these at work from time to time. lol. Plus Ive been really pleased with A* quality and features. I have sidi boots also, but they are starting to get out of my pricerange. The street burner was more protection, but also 100 bucks more. And I already have race boots.
Roderick M on Apr 26, 2017
Took a flyer on these. Never had a pair of riding boots like these before. Always wore lace-ups with the big lug soles. Was looking for something a little lighter and airier for summer touring that still affords decent protection. Giving these a shot. So far, so good. They are comfy and have decent protection features.

Do alpine star boots run big in sizes?
John H on Mar 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The new smx-1 R ran a big for me, i wear a U.S. 9.5 in sneakers, i went by the sizing chart and revzilla makes a recommendation to go from a E.U. 44 down to a E.U. 43... when i received the size 43 it still felt to big and to loose. in the toes ankle and top of the foot. I went down to a local shop and tried on the E.U. 42 (or U.S. size 8) and it felt nice and snug and i had just enough room at the toes to be comfortable. it is a narrow sole and i have wide flat feet which is my only concern but to answer your question, yes i believe they run big
Yellow or flourecent / hi viz yellow ?
A C on Feb 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The vented version has a hi-viz option. The non-vented do not
What's the difference between these (the SMX-1 R Vented) and the "S-MX 1" model (http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/alpinestars-s-mx-1-riding-shoes)? Is this version newer?
2002ARSY51 on Jul 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There are quite a few differences between the two. -1R has better ankle protection, fasteners have a different angle, better heel protection, the sole is upgraded, toe guard is replaceable, flex zones are beefed up and the -1R has a CE rating. I have both and the -1R is by far superior.
Revzilla has a sizing note for these shoes stating that sizes 43, 44, and 45 tend to run a half size larger than what is specified by Astars. Is this true across all sizes in this shoe, or just the three that they pointed out? In particular, I am wondering if a size 49 is actually a 49.5 or if its true to size at 49.
A shopper on Jun 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am usually a size 13 us and the boots i puschased are a size 48 which is supposedly a size 12 1/2 us
They are very comfortable so I would think that these run approximately half a us size larger
I hope that this answer is helpful
I wear a size 10.5 and would like to order a pair of these. Heard that they run very large. What Euro size should I order?
Lanny M on Jun 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi, I wear Euro 43 and bought Euro 43 size of these boots from revzilla.com. As per regular Men's shoe size conversion Euro 43 should be US 10 but here on website these boots are as Euro 43=US 9. So I assume you should go after Euro 44. IMHO. I wear other shoes EURO 43 = US 10 for instance.
I wear an 8.5 D. Is this boot going to be wide enough? Since there is no 8.5 what size should I get?
Danis W on Apr 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I wear a size 10 and also have a wide foot. I went with the 44 and found the boot to be very comfortable. I have the vented versions and can feel the air flowing thru them! Excellent for warm weather.
How do i know what size i wear in this boot?
ricco j on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I wear a Mens US size 13 and bought the alpine vented boot in size 48
It is very comfortable and as close to a mens US size 13 as possible.
I hope that this is helpful ?
Is this a shoe that you would be comfortable wearing all day? Or more strictly a riding shoe?
Benjamin B on Jul 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Depends on what you will be doing that day. They are very comfortable to walk in and wear, but feel more like a hiking boot than a shoe. I wear them with jeans no problem.
Was going to buy these but noticed the middle to be mesh and not leather. Wouldn't this attract a lot of dirt?
Jason C on Mar 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: not at all. the ventilation will be worth it.
