Reviews & Questions
It's simple, because this is a jacket you can rip through a Sunday drive in but still stop for lunch and not look like a power ranger. Because it *doesn't* have a thermal liner(LPT, unless it's full sleeve, it's useless), because it's cheaper and does the street sport jacket idea better than the GP R and Jaws, and cost $50 less. It's not here to change your life, but it'll get your fair weather riding done with all of the quality jacket features and bits you expect from A*'s, at a resonable price, and I can already tell I'm going to love it.
The list of conservatively styled blacked out sport jackets is very few, those < $6-700 even fewer. < $450? pretty sure the GP Plus has the market cornered, yes the A* logos are there, but it's noticeably devoid of any 'color for styling sake' nonsense really.
Feature wise, it has what you need and little else. Most any sport jacket comes with a napoleon pocket and various other inner jacket pockets , a mesh liner, ect. Ventilation? it has that, that's why you're on the 'perforated' version page. Shoulder/forearm armor? it has that too. The neck and wrist areas are particularly more comfortable and seem to be a more 'velvet' type of material than A*'s jackets of the past, and the leather itself is extremely supple. For *your* pleasure of course.
A* is always a mixed bag for me. They're either ~ 1/4" too long in the cuff area or just right. The GP Plus R is the former, unfortunately it is very slightly too long, and wearing shortie gloves is a pain. Not impossible, but the jacket is best suited to a gauntlet style. I don't have abnormally long arms, and I'm 6' 1". Chest area has extra room but not enough to say go for a size up. I'm not particularly athletic or pudgy.

I am 6'2", 200lbs athletic build (~44" chest) and the size 56 fits perfect. At first I thought it was a little snug and also ordered a 58 but the 56 was better and fit really well after 1 ride.
I highsided @ about 60mph on the track with this jacket on and it did an excellent job of protecting me and held up pretty well too with relatively little wear despite a decent slide.
Being a first time rider, I've only had one leather jacket before. In comparison to that Joe Rocket leather jacket, I like the race fit of the Alpinestars. Not too big of a guy, 5'7" weighing in at about 160 lbs. I have a slightly wider shoulder and chest so a size 50 (Euro) fits me perfectly though I might be able to fit into a 48. I love everything about it, every time I put it on there's a smile on my face. The styling is great, the construction is well done, materials are high quality, and I feel that it's worth every penny I paid for it and more.
The only downsides I have found about this jacket are the sleeve lengths and wrists. Having to wear a size 50, the sleeves are a bit longer than I would like but as I hear, that's a pretty common thing to have, it's either the sleeves or the chest. For the wrists, I have found that wearing a watch I have to slide my watch back a bit to fit the wrist area. I also have trouble fitting the jacket over my gloves. This is something a gauntlet type glove would probably solve in a second. Something I intend to invest in in the future.
The jacket doesn't come with CE approved chest and back armor but rather a foamy pad for each. Though both are easily replaced with the Alpinestars CE armors which I did.
Overall I recommend this to anyone who wants a great leather jacket.
This product makes you feel like a superhero. I bought the Red/White/Black Version and i rarely do regret this purchase. If you are a weekend rider or a street bike enthusiast this jacket will fit your style perfectly.
The fit truly is relaxed and comfortable. I feel like it is the perfect fit for on and off the motorcycle, although if its summer it will get hot just walking around in it.
The aesthetics are head turning. It just looks like a nice jacket. People who dont know about motorcycles will think its cool, and people who do, see the A* logo and know its a solid jacket.
Functionality- Pads make you feel more safe and secure. Havent had trouble with the main zipper. straps/Velcro work fine. Side pickets on your side stomach are in an awkward position, they take some getting used to and are annoying at first. H20 resistant pocket is good for when you are caught in a storm. stretchy material found throughout the jacket is great.
Breathability- Great... As soon as you start riding from a stop light, you will feel the air come to your body which is amazing.
All in all, Jacket is everything you need. I would recommend this product to anyone who HAS the extra money to spend, because it is expensive.
Now with this Jacket after a few weeks and a bunch of hot days I can say that the airflow of this Jacket is awesome. The Quality is very good and the Jacket light weight.
I'm short and bulky with 5'8", 215 lbs and a 42" chest but athletic build (and beer belly ;-)). I went to the store to try both 54 and 56 but went with the 56 to give me more space. Even the bigger size fits very snug and it can be adjusted on the waist like described in the Video.
All in all a great Jacket, great fit and style. Why didn't I have a Jacket like this in the past? Simple answer, I saved the money but that was stupid.
This is a jacket that’s purpose built, by that I mean if you like to load up your pockets, forget it. Yes, a smartphone will fit in the waterproof pocket and you can fit a slim wallet and garage door opener in the exterior slash pockets but that’s about it. That’s fine by me, if I have to carry much more then I use a backpack anyway. I ordered the white, blue & black option and think it looks great. The white leather will help keep it from soaking up heat and be more visible without being high-viz yellow.
The $400 question though is how does it fit? Well, that’s not an easy question. I’m 6’2” and weigh in at 175lbs so I’m tall and thin. I have a 41 inch chest but 27 inch arms so looking at the size chart you can see the dilemma, its either fit the chest and have arms that are a good 3 inches short or get the right arm length and deal with it being bigger in the chest. I opted to fit the arms and ordered a Euro 58; it was the smart choice. The reality is that I am not using this jacket at the track (I have a dedicated two piece suit for that) and I don’t mind a little extra roominess in the body so I can be more flexible in what I wear beneath it. So when I tried it on; the arms fit perfectly and the chest didn’t have near as much room in it as I feared might be the case. Yes, there is some extra material along the sides but cinching down the Velcro straps at the waist takes care of that. There’s no flapping around at speed and it fits great; its not second skin tight but that’s not what I wanted anyway; its trim without being bulky.
My advice? If you’re looking for a high quality technical jacket for hot weather riding then this definitely belongs on your short list. If you’re concerned about fit, hey, they ship for free and no restocking fees; but my advice ask yourself if this is for the track or for the street. If its for the street make sure that you don’t go so tight that you can’t wear anything other than a t-shirt beneath it. I’m impressed with it and think it’s a great jacket.
Any tall riders wearing this? 6"4 and on the skinny side. Any idea on a good size fit?
Whats the diffrance between this and the Jaws jacket?
Or is it all just a matter of how I feel in it?
I'm about 5'11", 240 lbs, with a 48" chest and a 36" waist.
The GP Plus R is a more relaxed, sport-street fit. It has more room in the gut, you have more range of motion and the armor is softer and more comfortable. This jacket with the GP Plus pants make a good, affordable two piece if you're different sizes on top and bottom.
The Atem is a race fit jacket. It's slightly shorter, fits tighter, and is only comfortable in the riding position. Expect it to be snug in the shoulders when in the riding position. They should not pinch or be painful in the armpits, though. That means it's too small or a bad cut for you.
Riding I wear a longsleave thermal shirt under the jacket because of the venting and perforation it's almost cold!! The leather jackets offer a lot more protection compared to the textile, and I can assure u that from my experience the perforated leather allow more air flow! I love my jacket and think even in hot hot weather that when I'm riding and not at a stand still my jacket will still be really comfortable
