AGV Pista GP Project 46 Helmet

The AGV STANDARDS project, established in 2009 with Valentino Rossi as its leading rider, is ready to get on the track. The AGV Pista GP sets performance standards with its wide field of vision, low weight and compact dimensions, extensive ventilation, exclusive ergonomic design and class-leading aerodynamics.

Development of the AGV Pista began by taking measurements of riders’ heads with a digital scanner. These measurements were then used to design the helmet from the "inside out".  It is based on the “Human Engineering” concept and applies to a new design process which starts from the components that are in direct contact with the head and gradually progresses to the outer shell.  As a result, the structural shapes imitate the area of contact thus providing greater safety and smaller dimensions.  AGV EXTREME STANDARDS HELMETS use FEM (Finite Elements Analysis) to set new standards in safety, comfort and ergonomics.  In addition safety, the AGV Pista GP sets the standard in environmental protection with the raw materials and technologies used in production having a focus on low environmental impact.

"I consider the PistaGP helmet to be a homage to Gino Amisano, an enterpreneur I admired for his ability to innovate, for the standards he set and for the competitive spirit he had when he faced a challenge. The new helmet is based on AGV Standards, the project that follows Amisanos core values and revolutionizes helmet development, setting new standards for protection and ergonomics that can be demonstrated. The new generation of helmets developed through this project has the task of bringing AGV to lead again in both the market and the technical field." - Lino Dainese

Technical Highlights:

  • The residual impact force transmitted to the head is reduced by 36% compared to the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The HIC index is 48% below the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The basic visor movement area has been reduced by 71% compared to the GP-Tech helmet. This allows use of the space saved to increase the thickness of the absorption material, benefiting safety.
  • The visor is Class 1 optical standard approved for excellent vision.
  • The field of vision is 15° wider and the overall visor window area has increased by 9% compared to the previous helmet, without compromising its level of protection.
  • The Z-Lift index has been reduced by 44% after wind tunnel tests.
  • The air intakes have almost tripled in size, whereas the entire ventilation system of the PistaGP helmet removes heat and moisture very efficiently. The padding has a 3D concave structure, which is preshaped according to the morphological characteristics of the head, while the surfaces in direct contact with the head are free from stitching for guaranteed comfort.
  • Thanks to its "from the inside out" design, the structural components of the helmet are designed to provide the required performance while minimizing size and weight.
  • The frontal cross section has been reduced by 3% and the lateral cross section by 6% compared with the GP-Tech helmet.
  • The fit of the PistaGP helmet, covered by three patents, provides an extraordinary high level of comfort and adaptability to different shapes, unknown up to now.

Features:

  • 4 shell sizes
  • Carbon Fiber Shell
  • IVS (Integrated Ventilation System) with wide ducts hollowed into the shell
  • Removable and washable inside padding
  • Hygienic treatment of the comfort padding
  • Breathable Lycra micro-porous lining and Dry-comfort fabric with sanitizing treatment using CoolMax fabrics
  • Double D retention system
  • XQRS (Extra Quick Release System): shield replacement without tools in few seconds
  • RACE 2 flat, non-scratch visor with wide field of vision, ready and suitable for tear-off strips (sold separately)
  • Total protection from UV rays
  • Highly scratch resistant paint

Note: The AGV Pista GP is known to have a very short chinbar for aerodynamic purposes.

Tight at first but breaks-in to perfection
Former Arai and recent Bell helmet owner I wanted a lightweight race helmet for track days that would not move on my head at speed. The new Bell helmets aren't showing up so I took a gamble by purchasing this helmet using a cloth tape and seeing where I fit on the sizing chart. The AGV Pista GP Project 46 2.0 Helmet is gorgeous in person. The fit was unique. Not the typical slide through a tight opening and feel it release as your head is IN the helmet. I thought I may have purchased the wrong size but playing around with the movable liner showed me that the thick fluffy liner had to be broken in. I wore it on the street and after a couple hours or riding it became one with me. Very comfortable once broken in. The lightness of this helmet is noticeable just pulling it out of the box. On your head the small frontage area of this helmet is amazing at reducing strain on your neck at speed. I have since taken it to a track day with my R1. The day was spent enjoying the bike and not a negative thought was placed on the helmet. I'm really happy with this expensive purchase. You do see and feel the difference with this helmet over my previous Bell Star and Arai Corsair.

I do notice that this helmet is for the track in that it has no room for helmet speakers and the face shield has a limited range of motion for opening. Not up and fully out of the way. It's a race helmet and on the track it was a pleasure.

Best track helmet
I just got this helmet for track use, and I couldn't be happier. It flows a TON of air, the field of view is massive, and it's super light and aerodynamic. Visor changes are super easy.

I had to size down from my Corsa (wear a MS in Corsa), Small in Pista. I like a snugger fit for track (but still, I couldn't even fit into a Small Corsa).

The visor DOES NOT RATCHET, it is either open or closed, and is not meant to be ridden around open (it'll slam shut). The visor locking mechanism is very secure, and I think is more protective than a traditional non locking visor.

This helmet is perfect for the track. I would not recommend it for street use.

I can't stop looking at it!!
Make no mistake, The AGV Pista GP Project 46 2.0 Helmet is a functional work of art. I can't stop looking at it!! I enjoyed the way the helmet was packaged, the innovative shape, styling, and the graphics. In my circles I haven't seen this helmet out and about. Out of the box the helmet is tight fitting but it adjusts and becomes one with your head. I do understand a race fit. I've been an Arai man for years and I still like Arai but their graphics haven't popped in a while. There is one graphic in the Arai I want but at this time they don't offer it in my size-[2XL]. Back to the helmet in question the AGV Pista GP Project 46 2.0 pops, its super light, its aggressive, no buffeting at high speeds, I love the ventilation, and the cool factor. This helmet receives major attention and likes, including the jealousy factor. This is a helmet well worth the price. I want the Pista GP Carbon before the season is out.

It's a beautiful helmet but...
Its truly a beautiful helmet. Everything about it is stunning. It's lightweight, provides solid vision and sexy as can be. I had the previous version of this helmet in the same size and just purchased the upgrade. Just came in from a 350 mile ride in the country with some thoughts.

My only complaint: after 1+ hour of continuous riding, my ears started hurting. It puts so much pressure on the ears that I have to stop, massage my ears, and keep going. I also had to adjust the cheek padding as it was putting significant pressure there as well. Moving forward I’ll only be using it for track days with 20 minute sessions and not for day trips. I was barely able to squeeze in ear plugs. I had to cut them in half so they wouldn’t stick out and fit in the helmet. You'd think such an expensive helmet would have a space for earplugs but it does not.

What are the differences between this and the previous Pista GP Project 46 "1.0"?
Marco Y on Apr 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The entire finish is no longer gloss, but a satin coat overlay instead. This isn't as matte as the Gran Premio, Gran Premio Italia, or the Mimetica, but it won't have the trademark luster of shine seen on the Carbon version. The 1.0 only featured the highlighter yellow (Rossi Giallo) color on all of the different texts. This only has a more muted version of that yellow along with blue stroke surrounding the text. The "46" script is not slashed with striping and appears to emulate a more pulled-back fast graphic. With the increased amount of stripes, "46", and other technical bits of texts, the helmet looks much busier overall. The plastic replaceable spoiler is smoked on this one (as it was clear on the 1.0). The neck liner is improved slightly with a more comfortable wicking felt material (the 1.0's neck liner was slightly more fleece-like). Inside, the top liner looks graphically different and is no longer exposed to the internals of the structural venting (a thin mesh-like fabric covers the IVS). The non-graphical changes were all improvements to an already stellar helmet while the graphical changes are just a matter of personal preference and design taste. One more thing. And this applies to all AGV Pista helmets made from 2016 and onwards (so, excluding the Project 46 1.0, and including the Project 46 2.0). They are Made in China [under AGV specifications) instead of Made in Italy, and the white 'Made in Italy' script that was on the lower-left back of all Pista's has been removed. I don't see any noticeable differences in quality and I hope my observation yields to become a factual remark rather than a mere assumption / hypothesis.
