Unfortunately, rear-end collisions are all too common for motorcyclists.
Drivers who aren't paying attention at an intersection or stop sign can plow straight into the back of a bike without warning, which is why eyeing your mirrors is such a critical skill. In A MOTO’s case, he only heard the squeal of tires seconds before impact.
It’s the greatest motorcycle rear end collision I’ve ever seen. Not only is it incredibly unlikely, but everyone seems to have been OK. Lucky for us, the GoPro was rolling.
The hard braking before impact indicates that the World War II vet saw the motorcycle, but wasn’t able to stop quickly enough to keep his fender out of A MOTO’s rear tire. I’ve got to say, their confrontation was handled very well, considering the collision seconds before.
Take this as a reminder to watch your back at intersections, especially while cars are still coming to a stop behind you. It’s their responsibility to stop short of pushing their front lip into your motorcycle, but it’s on you to act if they don’t. Always ride with well-adjusted mirrors, and make sure your tail lights and turn signals are hunky-dory before heading out. If your mirrors don’t work at any angle, it might be time to consider some aftermarket replacements.
As for the Civic, that bumper looks pretty intact. Maybe they can just put it back on?
