No good if you use speakers
I was excited for this helmet with a great price from Revzilla on such a good lid. Unfortunately I'm sending it back . There's no room for the Sena speakers in the ear pockets without them rubbing on your ears.

Why have I always bought junk til now?
I've always hedged on spending money for a good helmet. Before this purchase, I owned two helmets which I bought in the $100-$130 range. One was a dual-sport style like this one, and the other a flip-up modular. I can't believe I have been putting up these after finally deciding to spring for something like this Hornet DS. First, according to Revzilla, my sizing would be medium. I have never worn a medium, but let me tell you, this medium fits PERFECTLY. I have an oval head, and while it does go on tight, while in there it is pure luxury. I wear eyeglasses and let me tell all you perspective buyers that eyeglasess fit wonderfully! The airflow is absolutely outstanding, measuring against what I've been accusomed to: even at 30 mph it feels like God himself is blowing breeze over the top of my head--almost like there is a gaping hole in the top of the helment! The facesheild fits nicely down against what is obviously quality rubber seals and the helmet is very quitet. In my cheap modular helmet I can't even hear myself talk--no worries here! All of you riders like me owe it to yourself to finally bite down on the bit and ante up a couple extra bucks for a helmet experience you'll be appreciating for years!

My Helmet, My Friend
Well made helmet. Reasonably quiet. Matte gray finish makes helmet suitable for display in the living room (no wife at this time).

Pack goggles for deep dust riding. The shield is a dust magnet and it will be in the up position if following others on dirt.

The visor is only slightly adjustable.

Replace the nylon visor screws with aluminum screws as soon as possible, or else you will be fishing for a nylon stud after the first (and hopefully only) time the helmet rolls off your seat.

Best Bang for the buck ever (thanks Revzilla)
This is like you buying an audi A8 2008, brand new, today. Obviously there're a bunch of things you'll miss compared with the 2015, but you don't have the money for the 2015 in the first place, so... But in the other hand, you're buying a top of the line helmet (you feel it as soon as you see it, imagine when you wear it) at a really good price (closeout here at revzilla)

Great Endure Helmet
Decision on a helmet came down to Arai and Shoei. The Shoei was recommended by a friend and fit well. So far it has been great. Not too hot at all on summer enduro rides.

Catches a lot of wind on the highway, but a better windshield would help with this on a DRZ400. Good protection for noggin with off road features.

Great fit, super value.
I was not impressed with the fit or the noise level of the street Shoei helmet I wore before going to Arai. The Hornet, however, fits great and is very quiet. I have not have the opportunity to check out the vents yet but since most of my riding in this helmet will be off road on my 650L it probably won't make much difference. Great find.

This is my first helmet, and it's been great so far. Just a little bit snug, but the cheekpads are wearing in nicely. Nice and dry even when riding in the rain.

Pretty great helmet, with some flaws
I do really like this helmet, it's a good weight and the padding really makes it feel secure. I do recommend it, but I have a couple items which I feel could be improved greatly.

The visor. It isn't really that useful. It's adjustable about half an inch, but it should really pull forward more, to act like the brim of a baseball hat to keep the sun out of your eyes. I find that it just barely peeks over the viewport, so it's not very effective. If it pulled forward another half inch, that would be perfect, and you could slide it back when you don't need it. As it is, I'm considering removing the visor as it doesn't really serve a purpose (other than to make me look more ADV).

The channel for glasses. I wear various glasses when riding, and find that the channel that they put in the padding to allow clearance for glasses isn't really correct. Right behind the ears it closes up in a way that hooks the end of glasses to make it so they don't sit down on your ears properly. I've tried a couple methods of sliding my glasses in there (with three different pairs of glasses) and it always ends up lifting up off my ear. Sort of annoying, though perhaps not a huge problem unless you're wearing the form-fitting type sunglasses I have where they keep out dust/dirt when they're up against your face. Pop them over your ear and it just doesn't work.

These issues aren't a big deal in a budget helmet, but at this price point I would expect these items to have been considered.

Great helmet, until you want to replace the face shield
Overall this helmet is awesome, and you will not get a better deal than this closeout price for a brand new one. It is very light and the airflow is ten times better than my old HJC CL-14.

Then I thought about buying a tinted visor and a pinlock system. Replacing the face shield requires that you remove the visor off the top first, this requires tools, then you can remove the face shield. Even though I found my old HJC to be finicky when replacing face shields, I might as well sit down and grab a bite to eat while changing the face shield on the Shoei. The only redeeming factor is that there is plenty of room for some sunglasses in there. The same could not be said for my last helmet.

Was looking for a DS helmet. I have mixed views about this lid. It grabs a lot of wind at highway speeds also it does not offer the best look down view when you are trying to look into a tank bag. I miss the flip up face on my Multiteck for these reasons.

Shoei quality and fit. I like Arai road helmets and Shoei off-road helmets. The Hornet looked pretty similar to my off-road Shoei, plus the close-out price was unbeatable! Thanks Revzilla! I love the cash back too. Got the Hornet today, great fit and very lightweight too.

I own a Shoei GT-Air and it's great...alghout not for standing position because the air generates too much noise. Also I wanted a lighter helmet for off-road / dual sport. Shoei seemed the perfect choice given the fact that I already own a Shoei and I'm happy with the fitment and every feature it has.

How does this compare to the Arai XD-4?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This helmet fits my head shape perfectly. The visibility is very good with this helmet, as is the air flow, and it is fairly quiet for this style. I have not tried the Arai though, so it may fit just as well. You have to try both, and decide which one fits you better. The Arai is very popular with a lot of adventure tourers, so I presume it is good. It also has more colour options available in North America.
Is it worth the $85 more than the AGV AX-8 EVO DS? It seems superior on your review although I wonder if stretching the budget is worth it.
Daniel H on Oct 12, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Totally worth it , this helmet is way better then the AGV (and I own the GP-TECH so I don't have nothing against AGV),
I will recommend to stretch it a little bit for a better helmet
Is this or the Arai XD4 better?
A S on Feb 11, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This helmet fits my head shape perfectly. The visibility is very good with this helmet, as is the air flow, and it is fairly quiet for this style. Does it come with a tinted visor or is that extra? If not what is the part # How does it perform at highway speeds.
Thanks in advance!!
Brian R on Mar 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Brian,
I like the quality of the Hornet DS. Mine does not have a tinted visor but I typically prefer a clear visor and utilize sunglasses. For long distance (4-6 hours) riding I still prefer my Shoei Qwest helmet as there is less buffeting. You may have a different experience as I'm 6'4" and "up in the air" a bit more than some. I use the Hornet on a Tiger 800XC with a windshield extension.
I have used Shoei helmets for years. I currently have a Multitec which will need to be replaced soon after 7 yrs of use. My question on the Hornet DS helmet is how noisy is it on the freeways and is it comfortable in cold weather?
Peter U on Sep 3, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I haven't used helmet in cold weather yet so I'm not sure how to comment on it. In hot weather I'm very happy with the ventilation.

The amount of noise the helmet makes at high way speeds 80+ is noticeable but a little less than a lower priced helmet (Sparx) I use to have. I have noticed that the wind and turning head in high wind can feel like a sail some times but I'm still happy with the money spent and worth the extra ventilation. I'm not totally sold on pin face shields yet but it hasn't been right conditions yet to truely test them.
Shoei Hornet DS shows conflicting reports in the reviews about fitting speakers into this helmet. I use the SENA SMH10 unit and need to know if the speakers will fit comfortably into this helmet?
Paul S on Mar 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Elverthing fits, it does take more time to route the speaker wire. The microphone does have to go to the side of your mouth and it helps if you close the mouth vent. Did a 3400 mile trip with the wife in october through rain and wind and the setup worked great.
Does the Shoei hornet come with a pin lock lense insert or do I need to buy it separately? Also do you have tinted face shields for the hornet? I am assuming the face shield has pin locks. Thanks.
Harry on Jan 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Mine did not come with a pin lock screen. When purchasing replacement replacement screens i have seen clear, smoked, and yellow with or without pin locks.
Compared to the AGV AX-8 EVO DS, the Shoei seems slimmer and better suited for everyday road and "occasional off-road", but is it worth the extra $85? The AGV seems to have better ventilation.
Daniel H on Oct 12, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Hey Daniel - Have put 1500mi on my Shoei Hornet DS with the recent KTM rally in Steamboat Springs. Ran it thru rain, sun and 300mi off road on my 690R.

Love the fit and performance - Shoei quality shows thru in all areas.
This helmet fits rounder heads. Works well at 70mph or 10mph over single track.
Best DS helmet I have ever found...visor up/down, googles or sunglasses.
Too much ventilation can cause excess noise in some helmets.
Good Luck,
I just tried the Arai XD3 in an XL and it was much too narrow for my head. I have a round to earth shaped head and I wear an Arai Ram III helmet in an XL which fits very comfortably. I was wondering if the Shoei Hornet in an XL or 2XL fit a round head that won't fit into an Arai XD3.
A shopper on Jun 6, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I wear an XL and my head is shaped like an alien, round up high. Its hard for me to get a good fit. I have had this Shoei for a month and its excellent. No headaches or sore ears, but tight enough not to move around.
From online searches, I've gathered that some MX goggles are too large to comfortably work with this helmet. For those that do successfully use goggles with the Hornet: which make and model goggles are you using?
Royce K on Jan 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is tight, but I use my goggles with it. I think I have ProGrip goggles that are medium sized. After a recent trip the foam did come off the goggles, but I think that is more from not wanting to take them off the helmet when putting it on and taking it off. the visor and Lens on the helmet makes it difficult to get goggles on and off. With goggles I would consider a strap eliminator kit.
I like this helmet, the main issue for me is the visor aerodynamics on long highway rides. It causes me a lot of neck and back pain on longer rides above 50 mph.
