MSR Base Layer Short Sleeve

The MSR Base layer Shorts have a reactive moisture transport system that keeps your body cool and dry. Made of stretch Lycra for greater mobility with continuous muscle support that reduces body fatigue.

Features:

  • The same great qualities as the Base Layer Long Sleeve in a short sleeve
  • Base Layer fabric is 50% lighter than the standard cotton TShirt. After 60 minutes of exercise the Base Layer fabric releases 80% of its moisture after 30 minutes of rest, cotton releases only 40% of its moisture after 30 minutes of rest
  • Made with compression garments that will hold your muscles in place longer and reduce body fatigue. Less chance for pulled and sore muscle tissue
  • Two different layers of fabric: Inner layer contains fibers that will wick the moisture off the skin quicker, creating a cooler inner climate. Once the moisture is separated from your skin the outer layer will evaporate the moisture evenly and fast
  • Fabric is spun with wicking and antibacterial treatments

Great wicking shirt
Great wicking shirt. Fits well, does a great job of cooling in dry, hot weather - I just got back from a long ride in 90+ temps at ~12% humidity and feel much better than in my usual cotton tee.

Size-wise: I'm 5'9", 210-ish pounds, 44-46" chest, 40" gut. I went with the Large, which fits snugly and is a bit of a chore to put on, but is pretty much unnoticeable once it's in place. I suspect the XL would have been too loose to be effective.

Highly recommended. I'll be picking up a few more for sure. The matching shorts are excellent as well.

Snug fit, but does what it's supposed to
The MSR Base Layer Short Sleeve is not kidding when it says it's a compression fit. The shirts run very tight. If you're not a fitness fanatic, you'll probably not want to walk around in just this shirt. Everything is still tight right now, so it hasn't been 'stretched' out as of yet. I can't comment on if the tight shirt actually improved my fatigue level and comfort while driving. I didn't really notice a difference, but I always wasn't particularly fatigued. YMMV.

However, I've found the wicking action to be very good. After riding for a few hours, the shirt was very damp, but my skin didn't feel wet. After hanging the shirt up for an hour, it was dry.

The fabric has a very good feel. Not itchy at all. Seams were not uncomfortable. I do worry about durability long term. Due to the very tight fit, it's a bit of a chore to get on/off. I worry that something will rip eventually. I have not run the shirt through the washing machine, but I wouldn't recommend trying it, due to the thin material (I believe the tag says hand wash only, now that I think of it). This shirt easily fits under any other shirt/mid-layer you want to wear.

I'd say this shirt is comparable, albeit much tighter and lighter weight, to the cheapish wicking workout shirts I have.

Good base layer
Only worn them a few times so I can't speak to durability. They are comfortable even in weather. As good as under armour and costs less.

Quality shirt but not for the hottest days
I was hopeful that this shirt would work well on days close to 100F with a mixture of on and off road riding. It does appear work better that a cotton shirt under a mesh jacket when moving. The problem is when you're not moving, the tight shirt retains heat and sweat. The shirt is not super light weight and therefore has some insulating properties when off the bike. Whereas a normal loose shirt kind of allows some venting just by being loose and walking around, this shirt keeps the heat in a bit until you start moving again. The shirt retains sweat until air flow hits it, then the moment you start moving again it feels cool.

I road around at 95F with an MSR shirt and an Under Armour shirt with a mesh jacket back to back on the same roads. Also stood around outside in the full sun off the bike. Same day, same conditions. The Under Armour was cooler both riding and standing around. The Under Armour (or any similar lightweight shirt) is thinner and looser and thus felt much cooler.

I do like the shirt, and will wear with the mesh jack at between say 70 and 85F where a bit thicker shirt is welcome. I also kind of like the compression of the shirt at cooler temps. On the hottest of days I find it too constricting and sweaty unless constantly moving on the bike.

works in the heat
I used these shirts on a 1300 mike ride our west through Nevada, Utah and Arizona in very hot areas and in normal temps. The shirts kept me cool and comfortable. Also the shirt provides some support for the upper body which helps on 300 mile days. I bought large and thought at first that it was a little tight but it probably should be form fitting. Great value for the money.

Great base layer shirt for Florida
Living in Florida demands that during most of the year a good base layer shirt to take the sweat away during the Summer months.

I found this shirt does the job very well, is comfortable to wear under my Icon Stryker Rig and is very durable.

You need to make sure you read the washing instructions to maintain the shirt properly.

Another great product carried by Revzilla.

Good solution for under jacket wear on nice days
It's always a challenge to find a garment that you can wear under a motorcycle jacket. You want them not to be obtrusive and not to ball up as you are putting on your gear. The challenge is greater sometimes in summer here in SoCal as regular cotton can really hold the perspiration and over time get very uncomfortable on those hot summer day rides.
This undergarment does meet all the challenges at a good price point. It also feels good next to the skin and wicks moisture well.
My only criticisms are;
1. It is for an athletic build, if you're carrying a few extra LB around this is going to be "snug".
2. I wish the collar was higher, almost a turtleneck as the usual motorcycle jacket rides at your neck and can be uncomfortable as the day wears on in a ride. A higher collar with this soft material would work well there.
I am 5'10" and 185 pounds and ordered a Large, it does fit snug and it is designed to do so.

Awesome
For anyone who has never worn a compression shirt, they work. Its skin tight so everything else over it feels loose lol. This thing absorbs sweat and evaporates it faster than normal so it really helps keep you cool.

Good for rides on a hot day
Living in Central Texas we ride in a lot of 100 degree days. I wear this under a mesh jacket and it helps keep me about as cool as can be expected. When air is moving these shirts really act like an evaporative cooler. I'd recommend, but noted that these fit very tight, especially around the neck. Some don't like the skin tight fit. I'm 6-2, 195 lbs with a 42-44 chest. I tend to be between a L and XL on most shirts. I ordered a large, and probably should have gotten an XL, but I don't mind the tighter fit. It will emphasize love handles if you got them.

Good warm weather under garment. Doesn't bind with your jacket which many shirts will do.
