Great Video

By George on June 08, 2010
Sizing:
n/a
Pros:
Rugged and Video Quality
Cons:
Night video recording
Comments:

I didn't want to have the camera sticking up from the gas tank, so I also purchased the handlebar mount. Having it mounted on the clutch side handlebar means that most people don't even notice it (it almost matches the radial brake reservoir on the opposite handlebar). It’s very easy to put on / take off the bike. Because the field of view is so good, not having the ability to instantly see what I was recording was never a problem after the first couple of recordings – you quickly get used to where you need to aim it. I’m able to see my entire instrument panel and more than enough of the road to have a lifelike recording on playback.

I never leave the house without the video recording (hopefully I won't have to use it for crash / insurance purposes). The PS3 version I have allows me to easily plug in the SDHC card after the ride and download it for future review. Playback on a 96" screen is amazing. The field of view options and day time picture quality is excellent. I've tried a number of set up options, but the quality of video recording at night continues to be poor. Read the manual, choose your set up and recording is a snap when you’re ready to ride.

There is absolutely no wind noise when using the waterproof back and you can still hear the sound of your bike. I prefer using the open back because I feel it captures my bike’s sound more accurately and the wind noise is almost unnoticeable for most of my riding – no need to have music added to cover up the wind.

I’ve cracked the top latching mechanism after two months of use, so make sure you squeeze shut the case before you try to lock it. GoPro were good about it though and are sending me another latch. Because of the cracked latch I had the camera pop out of its case a few rides ago and go flying into an intersection at about 40-50 km/h (I had been taping the case shut until the new latch arrived). After circling around and picking up the camera, battery and battery cover it was good to go – a few small dents in the battery and a few scrapes on the corners. I was hoping the downloaded video would show it popping out of the case and onto the road, but the camera stopped recording about 15 seconds before it came out of the case (coincidence or caused by the impact?). It continues to record video without noticeable issues.

I have yet to accurately time it, but recording two hour runs in 1080 haven’t been a problem with a 16GB SDHC card and one battery. I will be purchasing a second battery however, so I can record longer trips and experiment with the various video settings.

I am very, very happy with the camera – I would have given it 5 stars, but the quality of the night recording just needs to be better.

GoPro Motorsports Hero HD Camera

Pros:
Rugged
Cons:
camera mounts
Comments:

Great video and picture. The camera and waterproof case seem very rugged. The camera is simple to use. Ther battery life is ok, a larger memory card is a must. The sound is very good, almost no wind noise :). My complaint is with the mounts. The mounts do not do a good job of isolating the camera from the engine vibration or the vibration of the road. So the video can be very blurry and shakey. So far the best video has come from helmet mounted video. They are clear and give a unique perspective. I have ordered a handlebar mount and a tripod mount attachment so I can put it on a RAM mount. Hopefully these will be better mounts. I primarily ride a KTM 990 Adv, most of my test video has been on paved roads. When riding off road with the camera mounted on the fairing the video was so shakey it was worthless. I still like the camera and believe I will be able to come up with a mount solution. Revzilla was, as always, great to buy from with fast and friendly service.

Pros:
Rugged and Great Value
Cons:
Interface
Comments:

Beautiful images, they look great!
The user interface won't win any awards and the battery likes to go through charges, but hey, it's a tiny HD camera.. Also the support materials supplied with the camera were not great, but if you go online to youtube, there are several excellent "how to use" videos highlighting operations. Get one - my little gripes are easy to overcome, and the Revzilla customer service is the best!

ATTN: KenK

By GregXB9R on March 02, 2010
Sizing:
Fits 3 sizes smaller
Pros:
Fashionable
Cons:
Cramped
Comments:

KenK, you really should not comment on something you know nothing about. The instructions for the HD say you can flip it, but the firmware does not allow it. Still waiting for the firmware to do this and fix issues with many SDHC cards 16GB and larger! Many cards fail when recording in R3 mode after the camera breaks the first chunk at the 4GB FAT32 file size limit.

Yes I rated it at a 1 to cancel KenK's 5

Great product with good quality pictures even on the run (but expect a bit more of 1080p HD to be shaper on the pic).

Pros:
Rugged and Great Value

Still waiting to get my hands on this version, but I have the GoPro Wide. It is a wonderful product. We have used it for many hours of riding including a trip up the mountain to see some snow. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I do want to address a comment I noticed in another review. There is a hardware flip option on the camera. It does not have to be done by software. You can select this option in the menu on the camera. If this is of interest to you, please read the user manual. It explains the various options in the menu and all the icons.

This little guy is a fantastic helmet cam. Its very easy to use and does a good job indicating when it is recording.

Does not work well in low light.

Decent product

By GregXB9R on November 29, 2009
Sizing:
Fits true to size
Pros:
cheap HD
Cons:
Flimsy
Comments:

The video quality is pretty decent for the price. Unfortunately GoPro doesn't have the firmware to flip the image if the camera is hung upside down. You will need to do this in software which means the video will be re-encoded, this is never the preferred way.

The improved audio is still not great, another thing that you will need to fix. I'm still working on this fix so no answers yet.

The mounts are absolutely the weakest link. The quick mount shoes are sloppy, so you will need to fix the slop to get rid of the jello effect (even with the rubber "nose plug" thing installed). And once you get the camera out on the side arm adapter, forget stable pictures, hello jellyvision. The suction cup mount is pretty good, but there will be few applications for this on a motorcycle. Look into ordering the 1/4-20 mount and a good Superclamp. Wish they made some real motorsports mounts that were heavy duty, and maybe a new plastic enclosure that has more than one mounting point.

Eventually I'm sure I'll get the bugs worked out, but for a second (or is it third?) generation product I'd really expect better. 3.5 stars for now. If GoPro releases the new firmware I would go an even 4 stars. If they fix the mounts I would go higher. Note you can not select 3.5 stars in this rating, so I chose 4 assuming that GoPro won't drag their feet on the firmware.
