Excellent Tire
I live in beautiful Michigan and ride every day I can rain or shine and the occasional light snow and sleet. The 401s just rock it. Great on dry, warm roads, of course - but also great wet grip plus functioning well at temps as low as 20 degrees. Feedback and feel are good and provide excellent confidence. I bought these as an exact replacement for a pair that have over 13,000 miles on them, showing good longevity, too. Minimal cupping with judicious lean-time. If there's something better, you'd have to prove it to me.

Can't go wrong
Hard for a rider to go wrong with the tire recommended by the factory. The engineers tuned the suspension for this tire so it makes sense

Run flat tire!!
First I was impressed with getting 17,000 miles out of the rear tire with lots of aggressive riding on my sportster and when it came time to changing it I couldn't believe how tough and stiff this tire is.
Then while out on a ride I was checking my air pressure and checked my friend's with the same tire fitted and discovered it was totally flat - only it wasn't! It had about 2 PSI that had built up from riding and you couldn't tell from looking at it or even while riding! He couldn't remember the last time he checked the pressure so who knows how long he rode like that. I filled it up and it held air without leaking the rest of the week.
It's good piece of mind to know that if you pick up a nail you won't be stranded. That said, make sure to inspect the tire often and check the pressure because you can't tell at a glance if it is drastically low.

Made in the USA
Use these on my sportster. Consistantly get 25000km plus, and even then, no noticable loss of traction. It pays to buy american, the comparable 404's i hear get about half that. Spend the extra couple buys and buy the 401's.

I've got nearly 13,000 miles on the current set and it's a great tire, rain or shine or whatever else Michigan throws at 'em! I could probably get to 14k before I get to the wear indicators, but I ride every day no matter the weather and would rather not take the risk.

What is the factory recommended replacement Dunlop front tire for my 79 FXS-80 Low Rider? I am currently using the Dunlop K181 MJ/90-19 series for the front and K181 MT90-16 for the rear and not sure if the D401 90/90-19 will give me the handling I want and need.
A shopper on Aug 12, 2013
BEST ANSWER: D401 is recommended by both HD and Dunlop. Put this tire on the front of an 07 dyna street bob. Handling and ride much improved over original tire. Bike had 8500 miles on the original tire. Sidewall on the 401 is more compliant and tread does well dry or wet. You probably know that these are stiff tires. I know several who are running Metzlers or the new Shinko tires with very good results also. Shinko has a much softer sidewall, but at the correct pressure, these seem to ride really nice and are rated for the HD weight.
What does "TL", "NWS" and "WWW" stand for. (Narrow White Stripe? Wide White Stripe?")
Eric M on Apr 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: TL is short for tubeless. You're correct in that NWS is for Narrow White Stripe and WWW is for Wide White Stripe, though descriptions can vary from one brand to the next. Since tires are such a critical part of a motorcycle, I suggest you call Revzilla's friendly moto-helpers to be certain you're getting exactly what you need.
my 2013 heritage classic has a dunlap d 401 0n rear with only 6000 miles on it and needs to be replaced, i'm hesitant to replace it with original tire. Any suggestions?
A shopper on Dec 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I was thinking with the same hesitation in 2014 when I bought mine. I have been very satisfied with mine. I will buy the same tire when needed. I will also buy from Revzilla, they helped me alot.
I have a Sporty 48. Wondering which tires to get as both front and rear at fat?
A shopper on May 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Stick w/Harley recommended Size and type of tires from Dunlop or Michelin. They have a heavier sidewall to accommodate the weight of the HD.
Is there a whitewall option for these Dunlops?
Thanks in advance.
A shopper on Mar 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the D401 is available from Dunlop in a wide whitewall. This is a front tire. the D401 is specifically designed for Harley Davidson. It is also available for a rear application, whitewall - only in a 16" size
Can I mix and existing Dunlop 402 MT90-16 Rear with a new Dunlop 401 90/90 - 19 Front tire? Thanks for the help :)
A shopper on Oct 2, 2013
BEST ANSWER: The combination of tires that you mention is the exact combination that I use on my 2006 Sportster CL 883 Custom. This was what was installed on my bike as original equipment. I have put roughly 85,000 miles on the bike and have gotten between 15,000 and 20,000 miles on each set of tires. I may have been pushing the limits on tire wear when I replaced them but I am definitely satisfied with the performance and durability of this tire combination.
Will this tire replace my front MT90B16? It is on a HD 97 Heritage Softaill
A shopper on Jan 14, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The Dunlop Harley-Davidson D402, Metzeler ME880 Marathon, and Dunlop Elite 3 Bias are available in MT90B16 size. Some online cross-references suggest that the MT90B16 can be replaced with a 130/90-16 but we recommend verifying that with your Harley dealer first.
What tire pressure works best?
A shopper on Apr 30, 2016
I need to replace the front tire on my 2010 Softtail Custom. The tire size on it is MH90-21. It is a Dunlop tire D 407F. This is the original equipment on my bike. What Dunlop size will fit my bike?
