Made for City, Spirited and Novice Trackdays.
These are my first full length boots and...wow they are awesome. They broke in about 1,000 miles, in fact I think getting them a little wet from use helped. They are super comfortable and a very supportive.

I will tell you, they WILL protect you in the event of an accident. I had a hard 40mph lowside on a 1000cc supersport, due to sand in a turn. I wore through half of the left toe slider, but other than that, just a slightly twisted ankle. Without these boots I might not be walking for a long time. Anyways, you can put your trust in these boots to protect you....tried and tested.

quality boot
These live up to expectations for an Alpinestars product. Good quality construction, decent styling. The most important fact to mention is the fit. I have a slightly wide foot, and have suffered Morton's Neuroma in both feet so I can not tolerate having the metatarsals compressed. Old fashioned leather boots stretch, but modern Lorica/plastic boots are not going to mold to your feet. Italian boot makers make some of the best motorcycle boots out there, but sadly they do so using a skinny Italian last. Sidi and Gaerne are simply too narrow for me. These SMX5s are typical for Alpinestars: the forefoot is just barely wide enough, length is right, but heel cup and instep are sloppy & loose fitting. This has been the case for me in the previous two sets of Alpinestars boots I've had as well. The only boot I've tried which was wider was the Coretech Latigo, but those are grossly inferior.

The ventilation in the SMX5 is not all that substantial, and I've had a strange experience where the instep hangs up on my footpeg as I move the left foot to shift. Still, I like these boots. I'd definitely recommend them for someone who wants something a little less armored than a race boot, but still protective. They go under jeans, and don't have articulated plastic armor that creaks when you walk.

Very Comfortable and Good Quality
I really love the style of this boot. I've had these boots for about a year and a half and I have worn off the fronts of the toe due to dragging them on the ground. These boots have really held up and are VERY comfortable. They run pretty true to size. I wear a size 13 shoe and I ordered a 12.5 and they fit pretty good. I am 6'1" and the boots sit about 4" below my knees. Airflow could be better, but it isn't bad. I plan on getting another pair of these.

Good Boots for the money
This is a great boot for daily commute.
I wear a US 8.5 shoes. I got a 41. I was skeptical about getting a 41 instead of 42. However, it fits well after 2 days of walking around with it in the house.
First day out with it on the bike, I could not feel the gear shifting and had no feel. But, after an hr of riding it got better.
So my guess is it will get better after few days of riding...

Initial feel about quality is that it is a good boots. Does not look very flashy( I got the black), So, can wear it under a jeans.
It is a good boots for the money.
Material quality is good.

Love these boots...
I would definitely recommend these boots. Very comfortable and durable and yet good enough to take to the tracks. Before buying these boots, Revzilla recommended to get a size smaller because Alpinestars' sizing is slightly off. I took their advice and it fit's perfect. I bought the flourescent yellow/white/red/black and I love it. I would definitely buy another pair after these.

Best boot for the 200~ price range
I tried on both the Sidi Fusion/Cobra as well as this SMX-5 boot from Alpinestars. The Alpinestars seemed much better made than the Sidi boots. These boots are great and very comfortable to ride in and walk in. I think the next step up in boots is going to cost you 400 bucks. They seem adequate for protection on the street. I am happy with them and they feel much better than riding with tennis shoes.

I am a size 10 US which is inbetween what Alpinestars offers(Euro sizing). Get the 9.5 /EU44! The next size up is too big by a lot!

Great boots and great price.
This was my first boot purchase and it couldn't have gone any better. I normally wear size 13 shoes, so I ordered 13.5 and they fit great. They are a tad bigger than what I usually wear, which is exactly what I wanted with the 13.5 size. The boots are extremely comfortable, and as another reviewer said, feel very good and flexible after worn in. I'll definitely buy again when in need of a new pair.

Great riding boot
All in all a fantastic riding boot. Very stiff at first, but not to the point of being uncomfortable even on the first day (though the new stiffness makes shifting a tad more cumbersome than usual). I've not found these boots stretch so much as they simply conform to your foot, so size accordingly to your normal shoe size (I compared my size 41 driving shoe that is tight on my feet even after years of use, so the boot in a 42 was a normal fit for my foot).

The boot is very comfortable, even during the break-in process. I wore the boots on my bike to work, and wore them throughout the day for a week at work. My feet were no more uncomfortable after the day than wearing normal shoes around work.

For the price, I consider them a great value for the protection they offer the foot and ankle areas. The soles show little to no wear so far (but I am very conscious about not dragging my feet while riding slow/stopping). I would not hesitate to purchase these again as a replacement when mine wear out.

Awesome boots!
Just got a pair of these yesterday. Very comfortable boots. I am a 10-10.5 in US shoe sizes and the 9.5 equivalent boots fit me perfectly, so they run a bit small. They have great flexibility for sport riding and the protection is top notch. Since this is my first pair of boots, it took some getting used to having less feel due to the stiffness of the chassis over a regular shoe. But obviously shoes are not a good choice. They are not priced badly, either for something as high end as this. Gives me a lot of grip and confidence on the bike to ride aggressively and peace of mind knowing it has superb protection all the way up to my calf. Highly recommend.

Great boot
Though I'm more of a scooter rider than a sport bike owner, these were recommended to me based on the many miles I commute a year on 2 different bikes.

They look far more extreme than they are. After very little break in, I found the boots very comfortable. I forgot I was wearing armored boots when I took a small jaunt into a wooded cemetery for pictures. Certainly not hiking boots, but comfy.

Very solid feel, and the zipper is solid but slender. You'll have an easier time with them if you're skinny or don't like to tuck your pants in.

They do breathe a bit and it's nice in the heat. Once you stop moving the normal sweat begins, but until they install AC in boots, these are great.

I chose this item because im a sport rider, I get a little intense, but the chances im going to the track very often are slim. this boot seemed like it had the most bang for the buck.

Loved my SMX-4's, but destroyed the armor in a wreck. SMX-5 feels like a lot more protection than the SMX-4, but not quite as comfortable while walking around. I also feel like the sizing runs a touch big around the ankle, so I have to use the Velcro closure to snug up the boot.

The blue version of this boot shows none in stock, anywhere. Is the blue one still in production?
Impster on Aug 13, 2014
Hi, i'm going to buy my first boots, i need something i can wear all the year (knowing that in summer it may be a little hot, and in winter i may feel some cold) the use will be commuting, and some short trips. I'm deciding between the s-mx5 and the web-goretex, what are your opinions?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have no issues in the summer. You can honestly fit some warm socks and be fine through the fall (I did fine last season). Don't recommend for winter if that is your thing.
The video review mentions being able to fit your jeans over the boot to hide the top, but what about having leathers tucked inside the boot? Is the top of the boot roomy enough to be worn on the outside of my leathers?
A shopper on May 12, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I don't wear leathers, but I think it shouldn't be a problem. When I pull the zipper up the boot is quite loose around my calf. I pull the Velcro flap tight to snug up the boot around my leg. I don't have monster calves, but I also don't have chicken calves either, so you should have plenty of room to put your leathers in the boot and adjust the fit with the Velcro flap. Good luck.
I was able to try this on in a store, I normally wear 11-11.5 US shoes. I am between a 45 and 46 in these and am looking for advice. The 45 is almost perfect but alittle tight in the big toe of my larger foot. Any idea if the leather in the toe areas stretch much? The 46 felt alittle too loose.
Jesse G on Dec 16, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I would suggest to go with the 45 even if its a bit more snug on the toe because at the tip of the boot the material around is not that flexible which is good to protect the feet and once you walk around you don't want it to fit loose, so if you can handle the 45 for a couple of hours you should be fine
Does this boot have a waterproof liner?
A shopper on Jan 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There isn't a liner, but unless you are riding in really wet conditions you probably won't have a problem.
What's a good cleaning/protective and or water proof cleaner for these boots?
Eric M on May 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Mild dish detergent and water has worked pretty well for me. If I were a betting man I'd say you could also use armorall or similar leather treatment to make them last longer
Can these be used as motor cross boots?
A shopper on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Nope, they are great road or lower end race boots but just don't have what it takes for MX boots. They are too flexible, no reinforced sole, not enough shin protection and most importantly for me to thin to protect against impact.
So, I tried on a 48 in an SMX-2, and it felt nice, would maybe need a 49 but it's close. I know I want a taller boot such as the SMX-5. Wondering if these run more narrow than the SMX-2's?, as that may be a problem even in a 50. No one carries 50's around here, and even though I'm going to order from Rev, I want to avoid as much of the exchange game as possible. Looking for a nice, all around protective sport touring boot. Thanks again!
A shopper on Oct 25, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I wear a US 8 regular shoe (converts to Euro 42, by the Astars sizing chart) and I have a pair of SMX-5s in Euro 42. They fit just great and are typical high quality Alpinestars. From my own experience they are sized spot on.
how can I clean the white boots?
A shopper on Jan 6, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We would recommend using a specific leather cleaning solution, or a mild soap or detergent. We also recommend to treat the boots with a protective sealer/conditioner after cleaning them. Leather specialists generally carry this kind of leather protection products.
i was hoping to get some replacement SMX-R's, how do these compare? or do i need to look at other brands for a replacement?
A shopper on Nov 21, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I will second the answer given already, and if you're looking for the best replacement for the SMX-R, I suggest the SMX-Plus as well, especially for race or track use. Some of the main differences is the calf support / adjustment strap and the additional support at the heel over the SMX-5 boots.
