Shoei CWR-1 Pinlock Ready Faceshield for RF-1200 Helmets

The CWR-1 Pinlock Face Shield provides a vast field of vision that rivals other face shields. In addition to protecting against 99% of the sun’s damaging UV rays, the CWR-1 face shield offers a distortion-free view throughout the entire range thanks to Shoei's 3D injection-molding process. Additionally, innovative new ribs on the top and bottom edge of the shield improve rigidity and eliminate the bending that may occur from wind pressure and during the opening and closing process, and an improved shield locking mechanism rounds out Shoei's most advanced shield system to date.

Optional Shoei CWR-1 Pinlock Lens available.

Note: Due to manufacturer restrictions, Shoei products can only be shipped to addresses within the United States

Pricey for a shield but it looks good
I picked up the Spectra Gold shield simply because I was tired of the same ol' dark smoke ones I'd purchased for my other helmets. I think it goes well with my Marquez Black Ant graphic.

I was concerned about how transparent the gold mirror was since the stock photo made it seem pretty clear; as you can see by the photos I included, it's not nearly as transparent as the stock photo makes it out to be.

Night time riding isn't a big deal, I'd put it on par with the lighter smoked shields in terms of reduced visibility. During the day, it gives everything a blue tint instead of just darkening everything like traditional smoked shields.

Biggest gripe, the same as many others have, is the price. I thought about waiting for the photochromatic shield but didn't want to wait around for it to eventually get released plus since the shield swaps so easily it didn't seem worth it.

Save My Live
Last February 14, 2014 I took my brand new RF-1200 for my first ride. Love the design, I use glasses so it was easy to put them on, and no pressure point. I upgraded from an EXO-1000. What I was unaware if that I will put it to the test that day. I was rear ended by a lady not paying attention. I am recovering with minor injuries, but the helmet save my life. I will buy another one as soon I get the money from the issuance.

Not what I expected
I bought the Mellow/Medium smoke and it is much lighter than I expected. It is tinted enough to make it look different than the clear one but makes no difference when riding into the sun. Had I known how little it is tinted I would have opted straight for the dark smoke lens. Still great Shoei product just not what I expected.

pros and cons
Hello fellow riders!
I bought the new shoei rf1200 earlier this year. its a great helmet. light weight stylish. the fit is amazing. the air circulation is good as well. no complaints other than,,
I got cut off by a carless driver, and did go down with the helmet. it protected me well the only con is that the face shield flew off once impacted. I am happy to be alive and well. with that said I recommend the helmet but not so much about the face shield. I don't know if the face shield usually come off in a crash. this was my only accident ever, hope this review helps and ride safe. don't forget your gear!

Not as dark as I hoped for.
Even though it's dark smoke, the sun will definitely get through. Almost blinds me, I have to tilt my head down a little bit so the top of my helmet is shielding me from the sun's ray. :(

I wish they also made the mirror kind of reflective for this helmet. The spectre version doesn't look like it blocks any sun as well... boo.....

Shoei quality
I have the gold mirror finish and it looks awesome with the yellow/black RF-1200 Beacon. The shield is a bit thicker than what I'm used to with a Shoei X-11. There have been no scratches, so hopefully it is more chip resistant. My only major critique is that the pinlock tab interferes with peripheral vision. A small shadow is cast within the field of vision which can be interpreted as a threat. It takes a few months for the brain to ignore the tab. The pinlock system makes sense for a clear shield, but I have no use for a fog lens with a tinted shield.

Gold is awesome!
Love this shield! I did some reading that Shoei's mirrored visors weren't mirrored enough and more transparent. Lies! You can barely see through the visor from the outside, even in direct sunlight. From the inside, I thought I'd see a heavy reflection of my eyes, but I can barely notice it. My only problem is that I'm having a little trouble getting (just) this visor to lock. I've adjusted my RF1200 and it still won't click in. I have to use both hands on both sides of the visor to push it down.

Time will tell
The fit and clarity of the shield is great, what you would expect.
I got the light smoke and it really helps the eyes in daylight conditions but makes nighttime vision more difficult. duh...
New shields are so clear that it's like looking through a new helmet.Time will tell how it holds up to scratches from bugs and debris, the things that eventually ruin visibility.
The pinlock feature is good for fogging. If you wear glasses your glasses can fog up but the shield always stays perfectly clear.
Its easy to remove and clean or replace,Good overall.

The Price of Cool
I purchased the gold visor, have the white RF 1200.
I have a habit of lifting my visor when I am stopped. Just make sure you slide it all the way back down to secure it shut.
It is pricey, but I like it and I am not disappointed. The tint performs as expected.
It fits and performs the same as the stock visor, obviously w/o the tint.
Sun glare is not an issue with this visor.

Perfect!! Exactly what I needed.
This is the perfect tint. Works great in the day and can see perfect at night. The only issue is riding into the sun I see a reflection in the shild. But not enough to bother me. Love it and would highly recommend this product.

I wear glasses so sunglasses are a little harder for me. A tinted face shield is a must. Changing the face shield looks pretty easy on these helmets. I couldn't justify the cost of the one that changes tint automatically.

I love this visor. I got the chrome mirror and have been using it for many, many months now. It has taken many bugs and wipedowns and doesn't have that many scratches. Certainly WAY WAY WAY better than the chrome mirror visor that came with my old helmet, an HJC CL-17.

Frank M on Jun 13, 2016
Pinlock is the only way to go if you really want fog-free. I commute year-round in the PNW. It can be 37 and raining, visor locked shut at a stoplight, and no fog. Even if you don't ride in the rain, it also works great for sport dawn patrols before the temps come up. I swap my insert between clear and smoke shields.

Does this fit x 14?
A shopper on Mar 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does!
Spectra lens colors - what optical difference is there between the silver, gold and blue? For example, the following relate to lens color. I have had yellow and liked it but considering blue for aesthetic reasons.

Yellow/Contrast Amber Lens – absorbs Blue and Ultraviolet light. Use a Contrast Amber lens when sharpness, acuity and contrast are needed and to block high intensity blue lighting such as UV and in Curing Operations. Good for working outside at Dawn and Dusk

Silver - Use to reduce glare and/or to decrease visible brightness. Can still recognize traffic and warning signals. Provides good color recognition (utility workers and linespeople)

Bl;ue - Eliminates glare, eye stress, and fatigue often occurring in monochromatic (single color) yellow lit environments. Useful as a general glare reducer in work environment where there is strong glare from bright lighting
A shopper on Mar 12, 2015
Do the mirror lenses (yellow blue) offer UV protection and prevent sunburns?
A shopper on Aug 20, 2015
Will this shield work with the Shoei RF 1200? I'm thinking about buying the dark smoke for the RF-1200, how is the visibility at night time?
A shopper on May 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes - compatible for RF 1200.
This will be very dark at night making visibility more difficult, even on well lit city streets.
You may wish to consider CWR-1 Transitions shield. I really like mine. Dark enough during the day (except for when riding directly into the sun), and clear at night.
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/shoei-cwr-1-photochromic-pinlock-ready-face-shield
Hope this helps!
Is there a photochromic/transitions version of this visor? Anthony mentions it in the RF-1200 review, but I don't see it available anywhere.

If it's a future item, when will it be released?
alex y on Feb 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: They have in insert the Photochromic /Trans but this one is new but there is no ETA on the release just waiting on Shoei this will be better because the insert don't get dark enough for me but soon as you get that email jump on it a lot of people want it but I can't wait to try it
Does the visor come in a pouch?
Elias B on Mar 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, it only comes in the clear plastic wrapping
So what's the difference between the normal faceshield that comes with the helmet RF-1200, the pinlock faceshield, and the pinlock lens?

Do I have to get both pinlock faceshield and lens if I want a dark smoke faceshield?
Charles Gabriel C on Dec 7, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Charles, it is my understanding that when you purchase a new rf 1200 the pinlock system comes with it. The system is a silicone lens that adheres to the inside of the shield. Not sure what the function is but guessing it stops fogging of the shield. There is a warning on the system that it shouldn't be used at night. Since I am in florida and fogging is not a big problem I haven't installed it so I can't attest to its functionality. Hope this helped
Can the light smoke or mellow smoke be used safely at night? I live in a suburban/semi-urban area.
Elliott w on Aug 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The light smoke is fine for suburban/semi-suburban night riding. However, I've noticed riding in the daytime I can still get a pretty good sunburn.
I was thinking of getting either the blue mirror or dark smoke. How well do these two prevent your face from being seen (for aesthetic reasons of course) and what are the benefits/ cons of either? Thanks for answering!
Victor . on May 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have the dark smoke. For the most part it will completely obscure your face, it just looks like a black shield from observers, unless you are in bright, direct sunlight and then your face can be faintly seen. I imagine the blue mirror would obscure your face completely in all conditions.

The cons are they don't work well in dusk or dark.
I have the dark smoke right now (awesome during day and okay at night, as long as your in the city). I've heard the non mirrored blue and yellow are amazing in both. Which color is really the best for day and night riding?
A shopper on Jul 16, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have the gold mirror. I have used it twice at night and it was too dark for me. Also there is a slight reflexion inside during the day.
