Inexpensive and compact, But...
You probably will not be able to use it to charge your smart phone. Android and I think I-Phones need to have the Data+ and Data- lines connected together which this charger does not. It uses diodes to drop the voltage from 12v to 5v, it's not regulated so the output can vary. I was able to modify it using a regulator IC and a different cable. Here are some instructions:

Howard U:I have used a Blackberry mini USB charger and it worked fine. The small Apple iPhone charger block with a mini USB does NOT work, but an iPad charger does. I think the key is power output, I think it needs to be 1.2 amp.Aug 3, 2014
