Really works to keep visor fog away
My Schuberth helmet came with a pinlock inner shield 2 years ago. I never took it out; left it installed since buying the helmet. It does affect vision a little, but I got used to it. When it rains, though, I can see clearly at the same time others are wanting to pull off the road because they can't see! It really works to keep the fog and condensation droplets away.

Well, it worked until the little slots that fit under the pins began to wear out. They're under constant pressure; so over time, they elongated. That allowed a gap in the seal between the inner shield and the visor. Didn't know it until I rode into a cold rain on a 15 hour cross-USA ride. Instant fog and condensation forced me off the road. It was really bad between the inner and visor.

So I guess these have a finite life span. OR (as I'm doing now), I'm not installing the new Pinlock inner shield until it's needed. Will keep it stowed in the tourpac and install whenever I don my rainsuit. That should work if I can keep it protected from scratches and damage. They should have a thick cloth-lined storage pouch for these things.

Visor Fogging's a Thing of the Past
The pinlock visor shield lens has really revolutionized my foul weather riding. Let's face it, if you can't see, you shouldn't be riding. If you have to keep your visor up and get smacked in the face by cold rain, that's no good either.

I used to be limited by fogging of my visor in really cold or wet conditions. Not any longer. These pinlocks really work! The nice thing is they're unobtrusive enough to just leave them in there all time...at least, that's what I do. My first one that came with the helmet lasted about 2 years (25,000 miles). It was scratched, didn't seal well and then started sagging down allowing an air gap to come between it and the hard plastic shield. I was constantly having to push it up into position.

Hopefully this one won't do that. I only have about 2,000 miles on this one that I've had for about 2 weeks. But the seal has been rock solid. I can't say enough good things about how well these actually work. There is no fog that forms on the inner face of the insert. Even if it does get moist under extreme conditions, you can still see through it as the water tends to form very small beads as it condenses. If that happens, opening the lower vent takes care of it.

I got a chance to test it out pretty well taking a ride through the Appalachians in early November. We hit hard rain at about 38F. The shield worked great. I stopped to help out a rider who went down on a rain-slickened curve. While my chin guard was open, the inside of the pinlock lock got pretty wet from just direct rain. Water condensed on it, but it was still possible to see. Once I got back on the bike I just opened up the lower vent and it cleared right back up.

I don't think I could go back to a non-pin lock again.

Schuberth Pinlock Shield Insert
When I bought my C3W it came with a Pinlock insert. I had never used one prior to this and I was very pleased with its performance. Using physics to keep moisture off the helmet visor is much preferred to using sprays or whatever else. My only complaint is that the insert only lasted one season and at $40 a pop it should have lasted much longer. I'll give Pinlock the benefit of the doubt and blame its short lifespan on my removing it and replacing it a few times but this time I'll install it on a new shield and leave it. Will update next season if I remember......

Prevents fog
This product works very well for preventing fog on cool/rainy rides.

The lens comes with a thin layer of yellow plastic which protects the side of the lense that faces your face. Make sure that you peel this off before riding. The lense does not have a yellow color and I didn't notice any significant effect on visibility after removing the yellow plastic.

Could last longer
Excellent performance but I am a bit disappointed with the durability. Mine has developed small bubbles in the inner coating and became opaque after 5 years of light and careful usage.

Essential for Shuberth riders
At a dealer's recommendation, I installed this on the face shield and just left it there 24/7. It's perfectly clear so you'll never know it's there. Then no matter what conditions arise --say you get an unexpectedly cool early morning ride -- you will have zero fogging---very nice!

Like other reviewers, I also found that the seal fails after several months. A "pro" tried to reseal mine but that fix lasted only a few days, so I ended up buying a new shield. Some riders get up to a year between replacements, but I've never heard of anything longer. To me, the functionality is so good that it's worth it, but yes I would like it to last longer (the only reason I removed a star) or better yet --- why can't Shuberth just make their face shields double wall at the factory?! This would be ideal, and what we have gone to as standard for double paned glass for residences.

Does not work in the long run
If you ride in the cold and rain on a regular basis, rain leaks in between the face shield and the pinlock shield. I have bought 2 different face shields and 3 pinlock insert shields. The insert shield lasts about a month with daily riding. The C3-Pro and this system are amongst the worst I've ever used.

Absolutely No Fogging
I have the Pinlock lens insert in my C3 and it has yet to fog even once. I ride in every condition. Rain or shine. Hot or Cold. Does not matter. This was a great addition to my face shield and now I'm completely spoiled. I highly recommend this for anyone that rides on more than just sunny days.

Scratched the original, so I purchased this as a replacement. This pinlock is invaluable! One of the best investments/inventions ever made! The ability to ride in varying temperatures without your visor fogging up is amazing! In the past I put a Fog City insert in every Arai helmet I owned for this same purpose! A must have!

Dubai is a humid place especially in summer, just imagine walking from a cool/dry 20 deg C shop to the outside with 49 deg C with 80% humidity. Who would want to stand for 5 mins at this heat waiting for the lens to clear up?

Schuberth has the Pinlock Lens Insert in "yellow", has anyone bought it and how does it compare with the clear one?
A shopper on Feb 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The yellow lens, as with yellow lens used while hunting and skiing, helps to clarify objects in low light scenarios. It assists you to see better in low light is all that it does. I tried one for a while coupled with my Schuberth helmet C3 Pro in late afternoon, early evening light but received a warning in California from some uptight LEO's that wearing any tinted visor in the evening time could result in a ticket. One thing I did notice also, since it intensifies the light, is that on-coming headlights really worked against you to cause momentary blindness from brighter light. So for those two reasons I ditched the yellow visor. Your experience may vary though . . . .
Schuberth also sells the pinlock insert in "yellow", has anyone bought the yellow, can you share your preference?
Minor B on Feb 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Schuberth's pinlock system works well for me. When I purchased my C3 they did not have the "yellow." My guess is you would enjoy the "yellow." The helmet I had before the C3 was a Shoei with a high definition ("yellow") shield. The shield was great for seeing into shadows, cut down on glare in the sun and was very good at night. If the "yellow" pinlock is high definition it would be a plus.
Does it come with the pins?
A shopper on Nov 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The pins were on the helmet lens already I think. It has been a long time since I bought the insert.. But I have had the insert off once since and it slips off of the pins which stay on the lens. Everything I needed was in the package. Just do not forget to take the protective plastic off of the insert on both sides or you will have a hard time seeing through it and the defog won't work right.
What have you found to be the best solution for cleaning without scratching?
A shopper on Mar 5, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We have had luck with standard glass cleaner and a cloth similar to one that you would clean your eye/sunglasses with. Another option is lens cleaner, that also works well.
