Fits like a glove
I don't even notice it much on my back. The protector fits like a glove. Although, it seems it might not give as much protection as other higher end back protectors, but for cruising on the CB550 cafe I have, it will do fine.

I bought the whole set, in order to put them into my RSD jacket. It is pretty lightweight, good looking, and comfortable. The air flows nicely through it and, although it seems it could, I intend on not finding if it would protect my should I hit the ground.

Not a stupid question at all. The back protector will go into the jacket with the honeycomb pattern and the logo facing the back. So if you were to open up the jacket and look in, you would not be seeing the RSD logo on the back protector. The wider part of the protector goes over your shoulders, and the narrow part covers your lower back.
