Any Adventure or Trail rider will tell you it's not if you go down but when. For this reason Puig has designed their crash bars to provide excellent protection for not only the engine but also the fairings, gas tank, and radiator.
Lightweight Bars - May not survive a real crash
Coating - These Puig crash bars are coated with a rough, matte black finish very similar to truck bed liner. They look good, but nothing like the photos. Matte black, no logo sticker. The coating fully covers the bars, but it doesn't seem very thick. Hard to tell without actually scratching it, but I've owned other manufacturers' luggage racks that have really quality coatings. There was a rusty dust near some of the bolt holes.
Fit - Upon mock-up, I discovered that the right side guard was a tad bit off, but it was enough to make it unusable. The fastener hole was about 1/4" off. The left side looked like it would have fit beautifully.
Construction - Seems decently constructed, but made of a lightweight pipe. I can't imagine that these would stand up to a real crash with the weight of my BMW GS. The way that they fasten together in front of the engine is with a single screw, and part of the guard that functions as a support to the engine in the event of a tip over was not completely welded, and the welds were very little. And again, the thinness of the pipe was apparent.
Overall - Maybe a good purchase for a Sunday morning rider who wants a little bit of insurance in the event of a driveway topple. For someone looking for off-road protection and to rely on the bars in a wreck (most GS owners), I would not recommend. The quality control is questionable with the fit issue. The matte black looks good, though. For the money I really was looking forward to them. I suppose you get what you pay for...
