Fitment Notes & Exceptions

  • Shock lengths are measured fully extended, eyelet to eyelet on centers
  • Changing ride height can potentially change many carefully-engineered attributes of your bike, including trail and mechanical trail
  • A change in ride height at one end of the vehicle usually will require a change at the other end
  • Heavy Duty shocks are recommended for bikes operated at or near the OEM maximum load rating over 50% of the time
  • Prior to purchasing shocks that are different than your OEM length, please verify that wheel and suspension travel can be altered without causing clearance issues - common interference spots include swingarm, axle, frame, tire, fender, chain/belt and guard, and exhaust

They are good! I purchased the 13" PS shocks, Standard. I weigh 210 lbs. and the stock ones presented the following behavior: medium setting was smooth, but they bottomed out, even when I was alone, in some street depressions of Rio de Janeiro; stiffest setting was rough even when I carried my 125 lbs. son (he complained) – stock shocks have only three steps. Immediately after the PS installation, I tried the medium setting of PS shocks (third step – they have five!), but they were too stiff for my taste. The day after, I have adjusted them to the lightest setting and they seem OK for me. I have passed by some street depressions and felt no risk of bottoming out. They are brand new: 20 miles ran. Well, I guess they have a softening period of around 150 miles, and maybe I have to set them a little stiffer in the future, maybe one step. I do not recommend the Heavy-Duty ones for you if you weigh equal to or less than me. Bike: Harley Davidson 2010 Sportster XL883R – the tall one. November 28, 2014
This product has an outstanding reputation among the cruiser crowd. I bought the Progressive Series 412 13" Shocks to replace aftermarket 11" shocks which we're installed by the previous owner of my 2007 HD Sportster. I decided on Progressive because of the softer spring rate in the initial travel and increase rate as the shock compresses. Also, Progessive internal shock components are higher quality and beefier than other OEM replacement shocks. After install, the Sporsters ride was night and day. Now i can ride ruined city roads without the rear end of the bike bottoming out or experience hard jolts on uneven freeway expansion joints. Love these Progressive 412, fantastic quality at an unbelivable price. September 1, 2014
Excellent upgrade for the stock suspension I purchased the 13" shocks and I could not be any happier! The quality of the product is excellant!!! Installation was a breeze! The ride quality was greatly improved over the stock shocks!! With the stock shocks on the highest setting It was too rough and I was still bottoming out. Now I have the new shocks set on the second lightest setting and when the wife hops on back the ride is Great!!! Now I need to upgrade the front shocks with Progressive product!! Progressive has put out a great product at a very reasonable price range!! April 14, 2014
progressives are "as advertised"! Easy to install and man what a difference! Now it is clearly evident that I must now replace my front springs for progressives! The ride is smooth when your cruising and firm when you need it. My sporty is actually quicker with the progressive shocks. Reason is that you no longer have that rear end squatting issue. All of the power is transferred directly to the rear tire. I highly recommend you replace your stock shocks ASAP with a set of progressives...... February 5, 2014

Jeff C: I bought these because of my past experience with Progressive shocks on my 86 sportster. They are excellent shocks and the ride difference is unbelieveable. Apr 26, 2014
A shopper asked: Hi I have a 2011 sportster 1200 custom, I find the ride a little rough, I also have short legs and the bike fits me nicely, can you make a suggestion of what shock and size I should get to improve the ride, and not raise the bike more than 1 inch? I am considering the Sportster comfort flex rear shock or the progressive 412 series, I'm not looking for a lot of bling, just a good smooth ride that won't raise the bike to much. Aug 7, 2014

Art A: The 412's are an excellent choice and meet all of your requirements. I have a set on my 13' Sporty Custom. Considering the coil spring pre-load is adjustable I would recommend the 11" because you will ultimately end up somewhere near the middle setting once you get a few hundred miles on them. This would allow you to maintain the travel and not compromise the ride height. The key is to manage the length selection based on whether you ride 2 up or solo and the average weight. Considering you ride a Sporty I would presume you ride mostly solo. If you weigh less than 220 lbs 11" should work great. Aug 7, 2014

Mark O: The progressive shocks make such a huge difference. Waaaaaaaaaayyyy softer and smoother. I put mine on a sportster 48 and i love it

Id recommend going with the longer shocks though, it increases the amount you can lean into the turns without scraping the pegs. I was constantly dragging mine so i went up with the shocks and i installed a lepera seat, the seat actually moved me a little forward on the bike and dropped me even lower than when i started with the shorter shocks. Its nice

Plus the lepera seat is wayy softer than the stocker rhat helps alot with the ride too

Steve B: When I removed my stock shocks from my 2008 Sportster XL 1200C the measurement from eye to eye was 11 1/2". I went with the 13" shocks due to the fact that I am 6' 1" with a 32" inseam and 195 lbs. Great ride quality!! Progressive puts out a great product! Aug 12, 2014
