Nolan N91 Helmet

Nolan N91 is the new full-face modular helmet by Nolan and is an evolution of the best-selling N90. The product of the most up-to-date studies on design and comfort, the N91 features a modern and styled look, captivating color combinations and painstaking attention to details to produce a comfortable, sophisticated helmet, suitable for touring and urban riding alike.

The Nolan N91 is equipped with the Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system. This system consists of a thermoplastic ergonomic opening lever, and of a second aluminum toothed and holding lever. The toothed lever releases the micrometric strip, thus the chin strap can only be opened with a very broad rotation of the opening lever. This device minimizes the possibility of unintentional opening of the retention system.

Features:

  • Polycarbonate shell
  • VPS (Vision Protection System) short dark shield mounted on the inside of the shell provides real eye protection when used independently from the clear shield
  • Quick-release and multi-position anti-scratch shield accepts Pinlock antifog insert (included)
  • Clear Pinlock faceshield and lens included
  • Adjustable chin and top vents plus air flow rear extraction
  • Removable and washable Clima Comfort interior lining and cheekpads with antibacterial treatment
  • Includes chin curtain
  • Dual action chinbar release for safety
  • Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system

Great value with full features! Grab it!
I ride my scoot (Honda Zoomer-X 2013) every single day, rain or shine me and my new buddy the Nolan N91 spent 500 miles together. I did a lot of thorough research on features and head shapes because I brought this to my hometown in the Philippines and there is no way for me to return it so everything had to be perfect.

First and foremost thank you RevZilla for giving me the right size and so far no defects on any mechanism of my N91. First time I put it on I knew it was the perfect size. My head is 62.5cm so i got the XXL, it was really tight on the jawline but i knew that was normal for a new Nolan n91 and after riding it for 500 miles it fits perfectly now and i can't feel any drag when doing head checks.

What I love about the N91 when i tried it during a storm, there were no leaks whatsoever and my noggin stayed 100% dry and once you have it on there are no irritating wind noises or whistling which i usually hear with other modulars. It really does feel like a full face helmet once you close the latch and the chin curtain is a big plus for keeping the shell calm, cool and quiet and it comes with a FREE antifog pinlock insert which is awesome, I tried breathing through my mouth on cold rainy days and not a slight sign of any fogging.

It has all the features of any premium modular in the market today for a bargain price of $257 at RevZilla nothing even comes close to the value of the new Nolan N91 modular helmet. If you have a neutral to neutral oval head give the N91 a shot, I'm sure you'll love it.

Also thanks to RevZilla for sending me perfection because i really had no ways and means of sending it back once it got to the Philipines. No defects, perfect size and all mechanisms seem to be working perfectly.

Nolan N91 - a really nice helmet!
Check out the Revzilla video on this product. It's very helpful!
This is my 2nd Nolan helmet. Though currently a little tight, it has new or improved features that make it a great choice. I have always liked having the quick-release strap. The Pinlock inner face shield has been improved - a nice feature to prevent fogging. New to me is the VPS, an inner vision shield. It's like having built in sun glasses. Certainly a nice option if you are not wearing sun glasses or have to wear regular glasses. I wish the inner shield was a little larger or came down a little lower - though still a great feature!

Nicely Designed & Finished with Great Features for the Money
This Nolan N91 was purchased to replace my worn out N102. The overall design, quality and finish is excellent. Major upgrades include the easy to use face shield attachment mechanism, the new Pinlock design with a silicone edge bead to improve sealing, the internal tinted shield with a control slider that does not interfere with blue tooth communicators, the smaller microlock strap fastener and a chin vent that effectively minimizes shield fogging when moving. The fit is slightly smaller than previous Nolan helmets of the same size. Flaws include a liner and internal tinted shield that are difficult to remove and install.

Excellent general-purpose helmet
I was initially hesitant about modular helmets in general -- and even more so about an Italian manufacturer -- but I have no regrets. The N91 is everything a helmet should be.

FUNCTIONS
- the front lifting mechanism is secure (won't accidentally open) and easily workable with gloves.
- vents on front and on top that can be opened or closed, also easy to do with gloves on.
- shaded visor: does not shake, locks solidly into place, and the relay mechanism is easy to work with gloves on.
- chin strap very strong when closed, and easy to open with gloves on.

FIT
-My head measures 23", so I went for the LG size (rated 23.25"). It felt quite tight. At first, I though I'd have to go up a size, but ended up sticking with it. It loosened up a little, and continued to feel tight, but in the way a helmet should. Not uncomfortable, even after a multi-hour ride.
- The chin strap has a habit of interfering with my throat if I don't line it up right.
- Chin curtain feels a little in-the-way. It needs to be adjusted a little bit when closing the face. Not a problem, though, since I only open my helmet when not on my bike.

My biggest complaint about this helmet is the design of the inner lining. Getting it out and back in is painful.

COMMUNICATION
For communication - I decided against NCom because it was more expensive and its functionality is inferior to other products. I ended up buying the SENA SMH10R, which attaches to the helmet with an adhesive Velcro strap. The helmet has holes for speakers that are exactly the right size for the SMH10R speakers. I use the boom mic, for which the fit just barely works -- expect to iterate with the mic's position a bunch because the helmet's front face section interferes with it when you close it. All the wiring can be hidden between the lining and the helmet in a way that doesn't interfere at all with comfort. It took me a good hour to get it to that point, but I'm extremely satisfied with the result.

FINAL CONCLUSION
The only part that was ill-designed is the inner lining, which is quite difficult to put back in correctly after you've taken it out. Functionality is great, no trouble at all with gloves on. It doesn't feel too heavy, and the wind noise is muted adequately. Bonus: surprisingly compatible with SENA SMH10R

Overall very good quality and at a very fair price from Revzilla.
This is my second Nolan modular helmet. This is a replacement for my Nolan N90, which I am happy to say, the Nolan N90 did its job after my Harley hit a patch of ice on the road and I kissed the asphalt hard. The N91 is a step up and very quiet. The size is just right. I am very happy with the N91 helmet and I would definitely recommend it.

Great for the money
The N91 was a great deal and exactly the type of helmet I was looking for. I am really happy with the purchase, especially considering the next "step up" was 50% more in price.

However, note the following:

The helmet is snug and there is no adjustment since the inner lining seems to be one piece (as noted in the videos). I find the snug fit to be great at first, but after an hour or so I start to feel like it is too tight. I'm hoping this will decrease with continued wear.

The sun-visor feels and looks a little cheaper than I expected. It works and it's been a great help on my rides, but it isn't super high quality.

I like to ride with the visor up occasionally (the transparent windshield only, not the whole front chin). When I do, there are times when it will drop down if I'm on the highway. It's a bit annoying and I've never had this problem with helmets this style before. So now, whenever I hit about 65mph I just close the face shield to prevent it dropping unexpectedly.

Otherwise, great helmet, especially for the price.

Excellent helmet for the price
The N91 is a feature rich, well made helmet. Fit and finish are excellent and a price point that's hard to beat, considering the quality.
The flip up works well, clicking nicely in place. The ability to lock the helmet in the open position is a nice touch.
The sun visor works well. It's slightly shaped, around the nose, but not too much. Best would be not at all, so I could lower the visor to any position to only cover the top of the view, but it's not too bad. The visor itself is quite light in color, so sunglasses should be worn in full sunlight. The visor is useful in lower light conditions, or as an extra block of the sun itself in addition to sunglasses. It works well.
Noise levels are medium.
My only gripe is the missing ear pockets. The helmet liner, which is nice and comfortable, sits directly on the ears without pockets surrounding the ears. If you prefer ear pockets, this will bother you.

A step above my previous helmet
This replaced a cheaper helmet because my girlfriend wanted to start riding occasionally with me and because the old helmet never really fit well, while also being very noisy. This helmet sticks to my head perfectly, and while it is a bit heavy (to be expected) when sitting in traffic, when moving the shape seems to make it feel pretty much weightless. It's much quieter than my old one, while likely not as quiet as something twice as expensive. When turning your head, the helmet doesn't buck around or whip your head around. The modular flip front feels sturdy when locked down, but is incredibly easy to open with gloves on. The mechanism is confusing until you figure it out, and then it becomes second nature immediately.

As for comfort, two issues. The most glaring is the lack of any padding on the neck strap. It can be relatively uncomfortable at times. The little two layer cloth flap is free to move around so you have to make sure it's tucked under the ratchet clasp or you'll have metal pushing against your skin. There's also a lack of ear pockets, so in ear headphones that protrude from your ear with push deep into your ear and cause discomfort. I found turning my headphones 180 degrees solves this, and it turns into a minor positive because it holds your headphones quite securely into your ears.

Overall a great helmet for the price, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Great helmet with nice features, good cost.
This helmet is a big step up in comfort and features from my plain jane cheap helmet I've been using for years. I love the modular design, it makes it much more comfortable to ride in hot weather. It is basically a necessity to have the chin bar up to put the helmet on as it fits very tight. It fits on the tight side overall; I sometimes get the pads folding over as I put it on because it's so tight, despite my head being just below the measurement range for the large. Once it's on, it doesn't feel too tight and fits very secure, but putting it on can be a little bit painful.

The flip down visor is possibly my favorite feature, though the visor isn't very dark and I often find myself still struggling to see due o the sun even though the visor is down.

The pinlock anti-fog system works perfectly so far, I haven't had any fog whatsoever despite riding in heavy, warm rain.

The hin strap lock is very nice, though it tends to sit a it too much against my throat, and it doesn't have a loop to use with a helmet lock.

The venting is ok. I don't really feel it, but I assume it's doing something. It does get a bit louder when you open them.

The wind skirt on th chin bar is very nice to have, but it is not the best designed attachment. It's a bit hard to pull out, and because the plastic parts on the chin bar aren't toleranced as well as they should be, one side of it falls out alot because it fits in too loosely. It definitely can't survive frequent removal.

Overall I like the helmet, it has alot of features at the price point. I'd probably buy it again if I had to go back as no other helmet in this price range had all of the features this one has.

I like the looks of it. It doesn't appear to be over sized and bulky when the chin bar is up. I'm going to have it painted LAPD white over black and looking at the overall shape of the helmet, that process would appear to be relatively easy.

Looking for a new helmet after mine was stolen yesterday. This was the most affordable modular helmet that included features I was looking for (fog protection shield, built-in sun shade, and flip-up) . N90 was recommended on other sites by riders. Watched all videos of similar class helmets on Revzilla website, but the next step beyond N91 was twice the price.

I chose this helmet due to previous experience with Nolan Modular helmets. I really like the flip-face style and Nolan seems to do it as well as anyone at an affordable price, and they have excellent ratings in the SHARP helmet testing in Europe which is important to me (especially compared to some other flip-face helmets).

Just got my N91 and it seems to fit pretty much perfectly around my head, except I am not able to open my jaw completely with it on - my jaw hits the lower portion of the chin guard. Is this normal for a modular/full face helmet? Or is it too small/the wrong shape? This is my very first helmet so I don't know if it's normal or not.
John K on Feb 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The fit is determined by how it fits on your skull, from the base of your skull to your forehead, and forward to your jaw. If it fits nicely there, then it's the right size. Interference with your chin is a matter of personal comfort. Mine causes a light touch to the chin, but it doesn't bother me...there did seem to be an uncomfortable tightness at the fronts of my ears leading to the jaw.

I deemed this unimportant to protecting my skull and its contents, so I flattened it out by compressing the liner material with the handle end of a screwdriver. It seems that Nolan uses liner where unnecessary, which adversely affects the fit of what is otherwise a fine helmet. It's quiet, it locks securely, the shield works great, and it looks great. From your choices, it sounds like a wrong shape issue, but if the lack of space around the jaw doesn't hurt, then I'd keep the helmet.
For a 58cm head (right in between the MD and Large sizes) which sizes do you suggest?

Also, my head is very round (read almost the same distance side to side as front to back) and have heard that N91 is less round than the N90. Is this likely to be an issue or is the difference as neligable as the webbikeworld review seems to say?
A shopper on Mar 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If you are borderline i suggest that you go up 1 size and i believe that the N91 is for neutral to neutral oval headshapes.
Is this helmet made utilizing 2 different shell sizes like the N104?
A shopper on Feb 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I believe that it is one size shell for the whole size line due to the fact that they only offer one size replacement visor. For some of their other helmets with different shell sizes they offer two different visor sizes as well.
Does this helmet come with the pinlock already installed on the shield?
A shopper on Oct 5, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Mine did not. It came with the pinlock, but took 2 minutes to put it on :)
