Nolan N86 Helmet

The Nolan N86 is the new full-face helmet by Nolan characterized by its sporty, streamlined designed, compact volume, extensive standard equipment and close-fit comfort. The N86 is equipped with an inner sun visor (VPS), Pinlock anti-fog visor with silicone-sealed profile, removable/washable inner comfort padding, Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system. This system consists of a thermoplastic ergonomic opening lever, and a second aluminum toothed and holding lever. The toothed lever releases the micrometric strip, thus the chin strap can only be open with a very broad rotation of the opening lever. This device minimizes the possibility of unintentional opening of the retention system.

Features:

  • Polycarbonate shell
  • VPS (Vision Protection System) short dark shield mounted on the inside of the shell provides real eye protection when used independently from the clear shield
  • Quick-release and multi-position anti-scratch shield accepts Pinlock antifog insert (included)
  • Clear Pinlock faceshield and lens included
  • Adjustable chin and top vents plus air flow rear extraction
  • Removable and washable Clima Comfort interior lining and cheekpads with antibacterial treatment
  • Microlock2 (patent pending) double lever retention system
  • Ready for NCOM Communication System
  • DOT Approved

Best Helmet for the money.
I'm typically hard on helmets. Usually only last two years. So I want a quality helmet that not overly priced. This is my 2nd Nolan helmet. n85 being the first (which was a great helmet) but the n86 is a much of a great improvement. Graphite black looks amazing. the new lines they used looks more aggressive. Better fit . Comes with pinlock and chin curtain . Chin strap you can do with one hand. GREAT HELMET!

Great Features!
What other helmet at this price point has the features that the N86 does?
This helmet is very nice, no regrets. Build quality is fantastic, it is quiet, has an internal tinted visor, the included pin-lock makes the outer visor almost impossible to fog. Graphite looks great.

Nitpicks:
1. The microlock chin strap is a bit short. Add a balaclava and it becomes very difficult to get on the first snap and uncomfortably tight.
2. The internal tinted visor does not cover enough of the field of vision - it is a little disorienting to have a section of my view tinted and 15-20% untinted.
3 The internal visor does not seem to be treated to prevent fogging.

I wear a size Medium in every helmet I have ever tried on. This helmet is the most snug Medium I have ever worn - it is not uncomfortable and there are no pressure points. I think that this is good because it will be perfect after some break-in time. But just FYI - it fits snug.

Great helmet for the money
I bought this helmet to get something a little quieter than the modular I was currently using. It's still not the quietest helmet ever, but it is much quieter than what I was using. The fit and finish is great. It is slightly less round than the other Nolan helmets I have tried before which was a pleasant surprise. I love the ratchet style clasp for the chin strap. I think I would pay for just that if the rest of the helmet were awful. The flip up sun visor is a nice perk as well. Also, the shield sits very securely when you raise it to whatever position you find comfortable (I ride with it half raised a lot). All in all it is a top quality helmet for the money.

Superior value, nicely made, just a few nits...
To start off, I am a Nolan fan but also own Shoei (qwest) and HJC too. I think Nolan helmets offer a great value and are well made. I bought the N86 based on past Nolan experience, the dark sun visor and the price / performance value. I was comparing this helmet to the Shoei GT-AIR and while I am sure the Shoei GT-AIR is a nice helmet, you can by 2-3 N86s for the same price! Nolan includes a PinLock shield too.

But the are some CONS:
1. The lower vent is useless from what I can tell. No matter if the slider is up or down I don’t feel much of anything.

2. While I may be off on this, the overall face shield seal seems like it could be better. The visor has very stiff detents so maybe I am not always closing it completely but it seems like some air is coming through along the top. Not huge amounts but a draft.

3. Nolan needs help with their manuals. The pictures are a poor quality and the English wording needs to be improved. What kind of manual is needed for a helmet you ask… Well the N86 has a cool feature where you remove a little area of the foam padding in the cheek pads in order to make it much easier to put your glasses on and off. The feature is great but the manual (and more so the pictures) were not helping much.

Overall I am very happy with this helmet and would not hesitate to buy or recommend a Nolan.
I would rate the helmet a 4.5 if that was possible.

Great fit for me, a bit foggy, a little noisy
Helmet fits my head well (my #1 priority). Very comfortable.
Pinlock-equipped shield is the bomb! In the cool damp Pacific Northwet, fogging is a big issue. The helmet by itself doesn't provide enough ventilation (particularly in commuting traffic) to keep the shield clear, but with the Pinlock liner it's almost never an issue.
Shield seals well against the helmet, so unless I have to crack the shield open at stops (see above), I don't get rain drips/dribbles inside. Eye opening seems to fall in the right place for me, no issues with visibility.
I like the sun visor, although I wish it extended a bit lower. Doesn't shade my view of the gauges, which might be intentional, but I find the contrast between shaded road view and unshaded gauge view a bit annoying. Still better than no shade when it's needed, and easy to switch on/off when riding through a tunnel, under a cloud, etc.
Microlock fastener took a little getting used to, but I'm starting to like it slightly better than D-rings; quicker on/off.
Not the quietest helmet I've owned [that would be my old Shark S650], but I always wear earplugs when riding on a highway.
I don't notice the weight as being exceptionally heavy nor light.
The bottom edge of the helmet is not a flat plane, so beware when setting the helmet down (e.g., on your seat for 'just a moment'), as it is somewhat unstable in that position.
Overall a good helmet for a good price, and a great fit for me and my needs.

Scorpion doesn't fit? No problem
I haven't had this helmet long, but I am very pleased with the fit and finish at this price point. I was originally set on an Scorpion EXO-400, mainly because of the features including the drop down shade. Well, my head shape wasn't cut out for the Scorpions but fit awesome in the Nolan N86. My local motorcycle shop was out of size large, and I ordered one up. Honestly, I think I ended up with a just as good if not better helmet. They are comparable in a lot of features but the Pin-Lock included would be the main difference. I went with silver for visibility (vs. a darker color) and very happy with the shell. I like the micro metric strap, it's easier to operate with various states of gear, and I felt it had enough adjustability to get it dialed in. Only gripe would be I wish it had better ventilation, but should be on par with similar priced helmets. The face shield does lock real secure in the different notches- it's not going anywhere.

Important note: the drop down shade is actually reasonably dark, unlike some of the manufacturers with lightly tinted versions (I believe this is a complaint on HJC's, possibly others.)

Excellent quality
So far I took it for a quick ride just to get to know it.
Pros: good finishing, The microlock works like a charm. The sunshield. The chin holder prevents wind from getting inside. Good acoustic isolation. The color (I picked the graphite which is not on Revzilla's images) With the discounts, it was cheaper than Nolan Italy (Eur200 vs U$187)

Cons: I still cant find the real difference regarding the vents (either open or closed, i dont feel the difference)

Another great helmet
I have had the N-84, and the N-85, now the N-86. I am a big fan of this series of helmets. It seems each time this helmet is updated, Nolan improves it. This time I only have one thing to say that isn't perfect (for me). The tinted visor that comes down inside, doesn't seem to come as far down as it should. This is a minor inconvenience. Other than that, this helmet is very comfortable, the ratchet style buckle is awesome, it is light, the padding is made to be changed to accommodate eyeglasses and other minor changes, and the pinlock is the best way to keep the face-shield from fogging. Over all a great helmet, at a great price.

Fits all my needs at the right price.
I got this helmet after looking at a few other similar options. I can honestly say that I am happy with my decision. I went with the flat black model and it looks really nice. I love all the little features that take it from a good helmet to a great helmet for the price range. The quick ratchet chin strap is a must have, the anti fog lens works very well, and the slide down visor is the main reason I grabbed this helmet. I wear glasses while riding and it is a pain to need prescription sunglasses, or have a tinted visor that becomes too dark at night. The slide down visor lets me wear my normal (larger eye glasses :Oakley muffler) and have the sun protection when needed. This helmet is even set up to be ready to take Nolan communication devices. With all these features in a comfortable well built helmet for the price point it is at, I give this product a huge thumbs up!

Naturally I bought it because it's Italian! Need any other reasons? Seriously, I had another Nolan (N44 I think) which fit well, looked good, etc. But the face shield could only be used full open or full closed. This helmet gives more options that way. It is kind of hard to put on if you have ears on the side of your head. On the plus side it fits well once squeezed into and hopefully will be just a stubborn coming off in a crash.

Had a Nolan N102 for years, was hoping to buy another Nolan as my Cardo System integrates so well with my 102. Unfortunately Nolan has gone in a different direction with their head designs and it fit me.... meh. Created a pressure point that my RPHA10 doesn't have. Disappointed it didn't work as the quality was surprising for the price point. I absolutely would have kept it.
James W on Oct 2, 2014
(1) Previous experience with Nolan was positive; this new helmet replaces what is now a very old
N40 / HondaLine unit. (2) In particular, the N86 was selected based on online reviews and limited examination of related
Nolan products (N90) in a local motorcycle accessories store. Primary requirements for me were: conservative styling,
good user reviews, value for the dollar, and useful features.
David P on Aug 27, 2014

I was looking for a good helmet in the 200-250 range. After watching a good amount of reviews on this website it made it easy for me to decide. Videos on this website are what sold me, very visual and good descriptions on almost every helmet I viewed.

I am replacing my current helmet, as the eps has, technically, come to the end of its useful life. The reviews on the Revzilla website, and WebBike World website, are positive. Also, the fact that the place of origin can be visited, and confidence in workplace standards is high.
Christine T on Apr 2, 2014
I chose this helmet because it's the successor to WebBikeWorld's helmet of the year, the N85, and this model is more of an American shape, slightly less round, and the ratchet micro lock (For the LOVE OF GOD why can't ALL helmets have this), the internal sun visor, and of course ... The bang for the buck! Can't wait to test it out!!!

what are the differences between the n85 and n86?
A shopper on Aug 10, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have both.
Face shield and internal visor are the same (can use my tinted N85 shield with the N86).
Vents are bigger and look more aggressive, but didn't notice much difference while riding.
Fit, quality and finish seem the same.
N86 interior has a nice red/gray combination.
The new microlock seems sturdier.
N86 is a little lighter.
Both are great helmets, I'm extremely happy with them.
I am wondering how this helmet fits (internal shape) compared to the N85. Can anyone make a comparison of this helmet to the AGV AX8 or the AGV Skyline? I definitely have an oval shaped head. Thanks
Gregory B on Oct 13, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have both N85 and N86 and didn't notice any difference regarding fit or internal shape.
Does the N86 have the chin "curtain" that helps keep wind off your neck?
A shopper on Apr 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It does have a little chin curtain/screen... And it helps a little, but not a whole lot.

I have to say though... This is the best bang for the buck on any helmet I've every had. ;)
Does this helmet have speaker cut outs in the foam? I know it does not include the comm system, I use Sena anyway. But does it have the speaker cutouts in the foam already or do I have to carve my own? Thanks
HSDD on Nov 4, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Hi, it has small cut outs I suspect for nolan speakers. I have JM speakers, so I had to enlarge the cut outs. Only drawback on this helmet is that it is a little loud.
thx, Dan
We saw a style of Nolan helmets at Sturgis Rally. We really liked them and should have bought them but didn't. :( We would like to go ahead and purchase this Nolan helmet. Wondering if this style has the slits for eye glasses? My husband wears them and he really liked that feature.
