Nolan N104 Helmet - Solid Colors

Nolan N104 Helmets represent an evolutionary step for Nolan as they replace the much touted N103 Helmet. When compared the older N103, the Nolan N104 Helmet offers a helmet which is much lighter (7oz), features a lower profile through the use of multiple shell sizes, better aerodynamics, as well as a much larger viewport for increased visibility. The (patented) chin guard rotation movement with elliptical trajectory makes it possible to keep the total size of the helmet's front section to a minimum when the chin guard is open. The "sail" effect is consequently highly reduced, and riding comfort is still guaranteed, even when the chin guard is lifted. The new ultrawide eyeport is the largest of any Nolan helmet, both vertically and laterally, for maximum field of view.

The AIRBOOSTER ventilation system is equipped with an air intake in the chin bar, another intake in the brow, and two rear extractors at the rear. The inner comfort lining includes removable cheekpads, inner liner, neckroll and chin curtain and is easily removable and washable as well as antifungal and antibacterial. New, redesigned comfort liner also accommodates eyeglasses much more easily than before.

All Nolan N104 helmets are also N-COM B4 ready (N-COM B4 is designed expressly for the N104 and is sold separately).

Shell Features:

 • Injected polycarbonate GE Lexan shell
 • 7oz lighter than the Nolan N103
 • Two Shell engineering allows Nolan N104 to offer sizes from 2XS to 3XL (2XS-LG and XL-3XL)
 • Dimensionally correct sizing allows ample cubic volume in chin/nose area

Faceshield Features:

 • Face shields are now sized to fit the two different shell sizes (2XS-LG and XL-3XL)
 • Ultra wide eye port opening is the largest on any Nolan helmet for superior visibility
 • Shield is changed by a simple push button mechanism
 • Pinlock shield included with each helmet
 • VPS (Vision Protection System) is new; slider bar to lower, push button release for instant retraction
 • VPS lens is scratch and fog resistant

Chin Bar Features:

 • Centromatic chin guard opening mechanism requires dual action, simultaneous action to prevent accidental opening
 • Dual action opening mechanism is positioned in the centre of the chin guard and allows for easy, one-handed opening

Ventilation:

 • N104 has new AIRBOOSTER ventilation system, ensures optimal ventilation where is is most required
 • Air intake in the chin guard draws air in and onto the inside of the faceshield
 • 3 position top vent (closed, crown vent, crown/brow vent)
 • 2 venturi exhaust ports at rear of helmet
 • New plastic vent tube channels in EPS disperse cool air throughout the helmet interior

Inner Liner:

 • Features removable cheek pads, inner liner, neck roll and wind protector
 • The inner padding of the new N104 is easily removable and washable and antibacterial
 • The shape of the inner comfort padding facilitates eyeglass wearing
 • Reflective insert at the centre of the roll neck further improves the rider's visibility at night
 • Neck roll can be removed easily, for more comfort in the warmer months

Other Features:

 • N-Com Communication System compatible (sold separately)
 • Features new Microlock2 quick-release retention system
 • Microlock2 consists of a plastic ergonomic opening lever, and of a second aluminium toothed and holding lever
 • Microlock2 minimizes the possibility of unintentional opening while still making it ergonomic and easy to use
 • Meets or exceeds D.O.T. standards

A top-line modular helmet at a mid-line price
I bought this N104 to replace my N103. It's the 4th Nolan N-Series modular I've worn since 2000. I've worn the Scuberth C-series modular as well and find the Nolan is a much better value, providing a blend of features and comfort close to the more expensive helmets while costing about half.

The Nolan N-series fits my round head shape perfectly. The new 104 does, too; however, compared to my other Nolans, the N104 is very tight across my cheek bones, uncomfortably so withthe chin bar locked down. I've only worn this helmet for a few hundred miles in cold weather so hopefully it will ease a bit as it breaks in but for now this is a concern.

The other problematic difference from previous N series models is the loss of the first "cracked open" detent for the face shield. In wet weather being able to open the face shield about 1/8" was ideal for eliminating fogging. The 104 lacks this first detent, opening about 5/8" at the first click, enough to let rain in.

On the other hand, the defogger vents' airflow is much better than earlier models' and, in combination with the included Pinlock fog shield, should work fine.

The N104 boasts a HUGE eye port, so big that there is almost no helmet structure in your field of vision. It's great to be able to read a tank bag map without raising the chin bar.

The built-in sun visor now has one-touch spring retraction and is easier to lower than the 103's visor.

The N104 is noticeably lighter and quieter than its predecessor. Airflow is also better, with re-designed vents and lining.

The N-series' articulating chin bar hinge system has always made these helmets a joy to wear in the open position: with the chin bar close to the helmet crown when open both wind noise and pressure are reduced. While riding "open face" may not be the safest, Nolan clearly recognizes that riders do so: the 104 features a locking mechanism to keep the chin bar in the "up" position, as well as a thoughtful bead of reflective material fitted to the chin bar's "draft guard", visible when the chin bar is up.

If you're a modular helmet fan with a round head and love features, fit and quiet protection but don't have a big budget, the Nolan N104 is an excellent choice.

My best helmet yet
I'm very pleased with this helmet in size Large, I've previously owned full face helmets, HJC and also a Shoei. The modular feature is something that I really like. Sure, the jaw area is a little tight at first because it needs to support the helmet when it is open, but it will loosen up with use. The screen does not fog at all with the pinlock film on and the helmet is very comfortable. I think I'll stick with this brand/model in the future as it is also a good value for money.

One additional note, you might think you need to buy the ncom system for bluetooth communication. I am happy to report that there was no problem in fitting my Sena bluetooth system on my helmet. I used the clamp on method (not the sticky tape), it goes a little bit further back because of the sunvisor lever but it works very well. I did need to use my Dremel to make a slot in the plastic lip on the underside of the helmet so I could fit the clamp, very easy to do. Of course if you don't already own a bluetooth system you might as well buy the ncom system.

Panoramic view!
Great bang for the buck, love all the features. Helmet was very tight around the jaw when I first put it on, almost sent it back but am glad I didn't. After a week it broke in and is comfortable. The eyeport is extremely wide, which is excellent. I kinked the pinlock insert trying to install it, so was never able to test that- is extremely diffficult and frustrating to install this. The visor vents well though, so fogging was not a big issue while moving, the visor does leak a bit at the top, so not a real tight seal there. The sunvisor is excellent, doesn't interfere with my glasses and comes down low enough. Also love being able to get the helmet chin strap on and off with a glove on.

Great value, worthwhile upgrade from N103
Overall I am very pleased witht the Nolan N104. Nolan helmets will never have that "solid" feel that Shoei and Schuberth helmets have. The different construction methods make that impossible. So the 104 has that same old Nolan "feel" as past Nolan Modulars. That feel is slightly less "solid" than the composite helmets. That being said Nolan helmets have outperformed composite shelled helmets in testing so I am OK with the less solid feeling. The visor on the 104 is HUGE. I keep thinking that the chinbar is up, but in fact only the shield is up. The field of vision is simply outstanding. The only gripe I have for the helmet is the fact that the placement of the sunshield controls makes the use of a third party Bluetooth system virtually impossible.

The cheek pads are very tight out of the box, but that is OK because they will break in shortly and then be just right. I think this helmet has a slightly more round feel to it than my past Nolans.

Great value
Bought this helmet to replace my Shoei Hornet. Will use this helmet for my slab tours. The Nolan fits very similar to the Shoei so I'm happy about that. The Nolan is much quieter. One of the unexpected benefits of this helmet is how stable it is in crosswinds;no buffeting or bouncing in the gusty Texas winds compared to the Shoei. I wear glasses and can put the helmet on without taking them off. The sun visor is sweet. I like the one handed cinch strap - that's a nice touch. The pinlock is another bonus. I can't say anything negative about this helmet right now. Hope all the gizmos, springs and hinges hold up. Cheers & thanks Nolan.

Hard Head to Fit
I'm just getting back into riding after a 17 year break and bought a new bike. My old helmet was 33 years old and I thought it might be wise to invest in a new one. I'm intent on riding safer now than I did back then, and thought that I should take helmet selection seriously. I tried on about 8 kinds of helmets at the dealer and didn't like any of them - some were quality issues, but mostly the problems were with the fit.

I saw the selection of helmets on the wall behind Anthony in the Revzilla videos and decided to take a 2-hour drive to Philadelphia to be able to try on a wider selection. Despite the routine way of measuring and sizing helmets, I couldn't even pull some of them on my head when they should have been the correct size. It was mostly a problem with the cheek pads being way too large (thick) for me. When I put some helmets on, they were actually quite painful on my jaw and there is no way I could have ridden in them. After trying on about 10 models recommended by the very helpful showroom staff, it appeared that the only combination that would work for me was the Nolan 104 with an XL top liner and 3XL cheek pads. Due to available stock, I ordered the 3XL helmet and bought an extra XL liner that I installed when it arrived. This combination fits me very well. I suspect that I'm not the only one that has this problem and it would be great if more manufacturers would make modular components so you could customize the fit of your helmet since it's such a critical factor.

I have very good peripheral vision and the opening in this helmet is excellent. It allows me to see everything. It flows air pretty well, but I would personally like more. I won't really know if it's a problem until August gets here, but I can always crack open the visor to the first click to improve airflow. I can only assume that this helmet will protect my skull/brain until I have a chance to try it for real - not looking forward to that. It appears to be very well made and compared to my old helmet, it's an incredible piece of technology. The padding inside is light years ahead of the old helmet. The built-in sun visor works great and is easy to use. I love the modular design because it's functional - you're able to flip it up to talk to the attendant at a toll both, it aids in putting on the helmet, etc. Most important is that if you hit the asphalt face first, that there is something there to protect you. An old friend didn't live long enough to learn that lesson after his last accident.

I'm very happy with this purchase. I'm not sure how I would have solved this problem on my own, if I didn't have the opportunity to visit the showroom and talk to the staff. I think Revzilla is a pretty awesome company with a great ethic.

Fit & Functionality are Top Notch
I've had this helmet for about 3 months now. I have always had a difficult time finding a helmet that fits just perfect (both in the beginning and after broken in). This helmet hits the mark in every area, with regards to a perfect fit and it is extremely comfortable.

Two minor complaints of mine (which I can live with):

(1) When you have the sunshade in use (I also use a yellow tinted pinlock insert, in combination with the smoke sunshade), there is a gap on the top of the shield which allows for sun rays to enter through the shield, hence, resulting in funky burn/tan lines on your forehead! Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to put sunscreen on that section of my forehead...ha ha.

(2) I drive a Suzuki Hayabusa and it's just in my nature to wear a wild & loud (design wise) helmet. This helmet only comes in plain colors, so that is a major downside for me, as I prefer crazy designs, which represent my personality. This is something I can live with, but it won't be long before I find the perfect airbrush designer to work on adding a little personality to it for me!

All in all, this is, by far, the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn.

Much improved over the N-103
The N-104 is much improved over the N-103 in many ways. Most noticeably its quieter and much improved vision. There is more front to rear room as my chin no longer hits the front chin bar and the Mic is not squashed up against you.

The Cons:

The fit. If you liked the N-103 sizing, you'll find the same size in the N-104 is much much tighter. Especially as you latch the flip up down, you'll notice the helmet squeeze against your jaw and ears. That really is uncomfortable if you ware glasses as I do. I expected the Large the same as the N-103 Large did. I also hoped that the over tightness would also subside as did with the N-103 but hasn't yet.

Had issues adding the B4 N-COM. The ribbon cable kept pulling out of the connecter as i was trying to mount the exterior switch assy. Took many tries of removing it to put the ribbon cable back in place. Then there wasn't quite enough space for the switch assy against the inner hard foam inserts and part of the hard foam insert broke off as I tried to squeeze it all in there.

I found inserting the BT kits and head sets for both the N-102 and N-103 fit better.

I'm using a large table spoon to compress the inner hard foam to make the fit work.

Russ

Great overall but painful fit.
HELP. Leaving an open face Arai for the 104 I am way dissapointed at the comfort level. So many good features but this helmet rolls my ears down so I have to reach in and fold them up. I don't have Klingon ears either. When I wear glasses the pressure on the temples is awful. I am considering a dremel on the foam around the cheek/ears to get relief.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks for a great helmet but this one pains me.
Just returned from 2500 mile ride. Mostly uncomfortable.

I've had previous versions of the Nolan N series and I've found them to be terrific helmets. I understand the N104 is a little lighter and has a slightly smaller shell, so I'm looking forward to getting it. Also, my head is more oval vs. round shape, and I find the Nolan to fit my head much better than say a Bell Revolver.

Nolan usually has Proper fit for me, color (cab yellow), modular, pin lock included, PRICE, ventilation, supposedly improved visual area, and did I mention Price? Also hope it has reduced noise compared to some less expensive modulars. These pluses should out weigh the inherent Sena mounting difficulty.

Combination of quality and features for the price. I wanted a solidly built modular with drop down tinted visor, wide view, comfortable fit, decent wind noise reduction and pinlock included without taking a second mortgage on my house. I had my heart set on a Shoei Neotec, but this seemed like an acceptable compromise for a little less than half the price. MSRP on this helmet is $450. I got mine on clearance at Revzilla for $289 (36% off). The Neotec is $584 pretty much anywhere that sells it.

BEST ANSWER: Mike, Sorry to say I have a Goldwing and I use J & M interface to work with my Goldwing system and Bluetooth with a corded J & M headset that was installed by J&M. So I cant say anything about the Sena SMH10. It works great for my application!
What head shape will this helmet fit?

BEST ANSWER: Definitely think twice before ordering. I'm a positive XL on both Shoei and Arai and after reading as many reviews as I could I've ordered a XL. Didn't fit not only on the cheeks but also on the chin, which keeps touching the helmet therefore representing a big risk. I'd break my "jaw" if involved on any more serious crash.
Anyone used the Sena-10 with this unit?
A shopper on May 5, 2012
BEST ANSWER: I've been researching the same thing and this is what I found. Yes you can use the sena SMH10 but the posts above are correct, either carefully cut a hole in the shroud or us the sticky tape. Personally I would not cut the hole, I would use 3m tape on the surface mount adapter. That tape never comes off. Here is something else I have found which is even better. The new sena SMH10R (low profile) works even better. The external battery fits in the stock slots, speakers fit perfect and you do not need to modify the helmet. I have the link to the forum that details with large photos, great job on the install. I love my n104 but I will be going with the Sena SMH10R.
The video says the Nolan N104 cheek pads are adjustable. Can you elaborate? I've tried on a friends XL and find that the cheek pads squeeze my cheeks pretty tight.. I'm a 7 5/8 heads and don't think I need an XXL.

BEST ANSWER: I use N104 CHEEK PADS - XL FOR L for my L N104, which have a thickness of 45 mm instead of 53 mm. This provided the extra cheek room I needed for a more comfortable fit. In general for the N104 cheek pads:
SIZES:
- Size XX-Small - Thickness 73 mm
- Size X-Small - Thickness 70 mm (also fits XX-Small)
- Size Small - Thickness 65 mm (also fits X-Small and Medium)
- Size Medium thickness 60 mm (also fits Small and Large)
- Size Large thickness 53 mm (also fits Medium)
- Size L/XL - thickness 83 mm (fits size XL, large shell for tighter fit)
- Size X-Large - Thickness 78 mm (also fits XXL)
- Size XL/L - thickness 45 mm (fits size L, small shell for looser fit)
- Size XX-Large - Thickness 70 mm (also fits XL and XXXL)
- Size XXX-Large - Thickness 65 mm (also fits XXL)
Hi there, your size chart just shows a single number for each alpha size. Online searches bring up "range" charts but they vary, and I can't find ANY sizing info on the Nolan USA site. Help pls! My noggin is 57.5cm BTW, which SHOULD be a medium? Thx!
Andrew S on Oct 3, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I can't answer you as to whether or not a 57.5 cm head is a medium BUT.... I can certainly tell you that I've got a brand new HJC helmet sitting on a shelf here. I thought it was my size and, by the numbers, it was. But, I have a head that's longer front to rear than the average and the HJC seems to be designed for a 'round' head while I have an oval head. In other words, the shape of your head will be a large factor in how the helmet fits. I find the Nolan helmets to be much more comfortable for ME...
Does the N104 come with a pinlock insert or does it need to be ordered separately?
A shopper on Apr 29, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Pinlock system and inner shield included in cost. Simple to install.
I looked through the box and could not find any info!
A shopper on Nov 4, 2012
BEST ANSWER: There is no manufactured locking system for this helmet. I use a gun-lock cable through the shield and attach to the handle bars. Most helmets use D rings the Nolan system is great for putting on but lack a locking ring or system.
My head measures 23 1/8". On your size chart for the Nolan 104 helmet, medium was 22.8 and large was 24". I'm closer to the medium. Is that the size I need?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The medium will work best for you. It will feel quite snug for a bit, but the liner will compress after a few hours. If you get the larger one, you'll end up with a loose fit later. Great helmet. I've been using mine for about 13,000 miles now
Couldn't be more happy.
My head size is 24" with a long oval shape. My question is, your sizing, is it round or oval?

My helmet is a extra large but it must be a round shape because after about an hour it hurts the top of my head and my forehead to the extent I must move it around to stop the pain
A shopper on Apr 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It's a large oval shape as is my head. The only time I have any pain with my headset speakers in place along with my usual earplugs - then my right ear gets sore after a few hours. I recently shaved down the interior foam a bit but have not had a chance to use it yet. A good helmet except the detent to hold the visor open for a little fresh air could be set to hold it a little wider. Also at higher speeds the wind shuts it completely
I currently have an N103 and am pretty happy with how it fits. The review said that the shape of the helmet has changed a bit, so I'm concerned that if I upgrade to an N104 that it won't fit me as well.

Has anyone gone from an N103 -> N104? Can you provide any more depth on any fit differences?
A shopper on Apr 20, 2013
BEST ANSWER: My N103 took awhile to feel comfortable. I have rode with the N104 only once so far but the longer I rode the more comfortable it seemed to be. I don't remember that quality with the N103 when it was new. Slightly less pressure on the forehead with the 104. Air flow seems to be better. I never could feel any difference in the N103, but definitely felt air flow in the N104.
In the end there is always a chance it wont fit right but Revzilla's got a free return policy and fair prices, That was a big reason why I ordered my new lid from them.
