I purchased the NEXX XR1R (non-carbon) to replace my Shoei RF-1100. The main reason for the choice was that it is one of the lightest helmets on the market without having to go to Carbon Fiber (high cost). Overall the helmet seems to run a little smaller than the Shoei RF-1100 in Medium that I had. I think the shape is slightly more round than the RF-1100 as well.
In terms of lightness, it is noticeably lighter than my RF-1100, and the aerodynamics are better. When at higher speed, the RF-1100 would snap from side to side when I went to look over my shoulder, annoying, however the XR1R does not. In terms of wind noise, if you have the face shield closed and locked, I believe that there is less wind noise than the RF-1100 and the airflow is more controllable. What I mean by this is that if you don't want any air, you can block most of it off by closing the vents. (I removed the included chin skirt as well because it caused the helmet to fog up at night, but that was the same with the RF). With all of the vents closed on the RF, a lot of air was still coming in from the bottom front of the helmet, which was annoying.
The overall fit and finish of the helmet are excellent. The paint and vinyl are nice and shiney.
The outward view from the eye port is also excellent, although the eye port on the RF-1100 is also almost as good, the XR1R simply has more vertical look room, and possibly a little more side to side view.
The visor itself seems a little bit flimsy in that I cannot close it by "flicking" it shut with the tab on the left hand lower side of the visor like I could with the RF-1100. I have to push down on the top middle of the visor with one hand or the visor twists out of shape. Not a major issue, but perhaps some thicker plastic or some re-enforcing plastic along the top or bottom of the visor would go a long way to preventing twisting when trying to shut the visor.
There is no visor quick release mechanism on this helmet, presumably to save weight, and this is not a major issue with me, I just keep a micro-fiber cloth in my backpack and wipe it down when it gets dirty.
The chin strap has a thick pad on both sides of the strap which velcro together in the middle. On paper this seems as though it would be a good idea, however in practice the velcro is not strong enough to hold the two pads together, and becomes a hassle to hold together as I try to cinch the chin strap down. I would personally prefer if there weren't two pads on the chin strap, as the one on the double d-ring side seems a bit redundant and makes the padding a little too thick. Unfortunately you cannot seem to remove the padding as they are sewn to the straps themselves.
The Chin strap itself is also a little bit too long, with much extra material flapping about. Also, the end of the chin strap which you feed through the double d-rings is folded over and sewn down in a little "lip" on the end of the chin strap. This little sewn feature is not done correctly in that it only makes it more difficult to thread through the double d-rings, and does not add much functionality. If it were folded at an angle and then sewn together it could potentially help with threading the strap through the double d-ring or perhaps if it weren't sewn at all it could save the manufacturer money during manufacturing and would be easier to thread through the double d-rings as well.
There is a plastic snap/button that the free end of the chin strap that you attach to, however it seems to be awkwardly located and it is also difficult to tell whether you have actually snapped the chin strap to it or not. It doesn't make a snapping noise or sensation when you try to snap it which has resulted in me riding around with the chin strap blowing around on occasion.
The fit of the helmet is as I stated a bit tight, but it could just be that it's a new helmet, as was the case with my RF-1100. The included pads are also interesting in that they only seem to allow you to thicken the top portion of the helmet that sits directly on the top of your head, but does not provide provision to thicken the sides of the helmet where your cheeks are. Due to the more round shape of this helmet as compared to my RF-1100 the cheek padding seems a bit thinner, so I was hoping that I could use the included pads to make them thicker, however they were not designed for that.
Overall I would rate this helmet about an 85-90%. I would say it's recommended if you don't mind not having a quick release in exchange for a very lightweight, comfortable, great looking helmet.
