MachineartMoto X-Head BMW R1200GS / RT / RS / R
Great quality product that looks good.
There are a lot of ways your cylinder heads could get scratched. Car door in the next parking spot, teenage daughter w/golf cart in garage, tip over, slide, etc.
When I have my umbrella, it doesn't rain.
Once you put these on, you reduce the risk of all the above, but even if they do happen, your cylinders are safe. These are made from a very dense, solid, excellent quality material. They look good installed on the bike, and installation is pretty simple. I highly recommend. I'd still add crash bars though.

Easy Install, Great Protection, but Pricey
There are a few alternatives for the protection of the BMW "Wethead's" cylinders. These seemed like the right solution to me, i.e. comprehensive coverage with an attractive material. They're robust enough to do the job, very easy to install (15 min. or less) but expensive.

Attractive alternative to BMW and other head guards
Bought these for my 2014 R1200RT. The instructions are easy to follow, and the install is very simple. I didn't like that look of crash bars on an RT, so opted for the head cover/guard idea, and I think the X heads are the best looking of the bunch.

Look Good, Hope I Never Have to Use Them!
I liked the looks of these cylinder head guards better than the metal type or the engine bars. They were easy to install and from what I've seen in videos, provide good protection in the event the bike tips over at a stop. I don't know how much protection they would offer at speed in a crash but I hope I never find out! :)

After viewing the installation video on the machine art moto's web site I was able to install this product myself in less than 30 minutes for both sides. I have other products from this company and endorse everything they make. You won't be disappointed!

Best Cylinder Head Guards out there
Buy these quick, before you lose your balance while adjusting your mirror with the wrong hand and you drop your bike in your driveway, marring your new bike's cylinder head.
I installed the hexhead version of these on my 2007 bike and didn't buy them soon enough for my 2014. They are far superior to the OEM cylinder head guards from BMW. I had the OEM guards on my 2007, and those break off in a flash and contribute to damaging your cylinder heads.
The machineartmoto guards are very substantial, are less likely to break off and will do a much better job protecting your cylinder heads from damage than OEM guards or expensive 3rd party metal ones. That said, I would not consider these a replacement for crash bars. Get both.
The only downside of the machineartmoto guards is that you need to use one of the cylinder head bolts to attach them, and as a result, you will need a torque wrench to properly re-tighten the cylinder head bolt as part of your install. There's an excellent video on YouTube of someone at machineartmoto installing these on a bike.
** Double check by searching the web that these guards will fit with your engine protection bars. Some engine protection bars fit more snugly than others.

Cheaper, Better, Head Protection
Cheaper, lighter, and better head protection than big metal crash bars. Looks much better too in my opinion. Installation was very fast and easy; less than 15 minutes.
Save yourself some cash, get these.
