Leatt 5.5 Pro Chest Protector

The Leatt 5.5 Pro Chest Protector is Leatt’s more protective line of chest protectors. The 5.5 Pro is the middleweight version of the 5.5 chest protector line and is specifically designed to meet the highest safety approvals for front, back and shoulder impact protection.

The three dimensional design includes eight multi layer articulating plates for a great fit. It has also been designed to integrate perfectly with all Leatt neck braces although it works equally well without a neck brace. Exclusive FlipFit front and rear, movable, plates allow your neck brace to fit under the protector, for outside the jersey use, or wear the protector under your jersey and your brace can still fit over the top. BraceOn strap system attaches the protector to the neck brace yet provides independent movement of body, brace and chest protector.

  • Front of protector meets the highest front impact CE approval, prEN 1621-3, Level 2

What were they thinking?
There's only one good way to test the effectiveness of a chest protector. Unfortunately, I had that opportunity today. There is no doubt that the quality of the protective materials is great. The problem is the design. As I looked at the design of the 5.5 Pro, I kept asking myself "What were they thinking?" Actually, the chest and back protection are good. Though, I personally think the picture of the protector used by Leatt is deceptive. It makes the protector appear to have rib protection than it actually has - you have to buy the HD version for the extra rib protection. The primary design flaws have to do with shoulder and upper arm protection - which is why I have an ice pack on my shoulder at this moment. I can only guess that Leatt was trying to design a shoulder pad which was very adjustable and removable (why would anyone want to remove protection?). But the result was protection that is not secure and uncomfortable. The shoulder pads in the current model are attached with a plastic clasp which move along a sliding attachment. The minor effect is that, when wearing a hydration pack, the pack-straps sit on top of the plastic clasp. It produces a similar effect to having a rock in your shoe all day. After a day ride, my shoulder is sore for another day due to the clasp digging into my shoulder all day. A more serious problem with the design is that the pads do not stay in place. There's so much adjustability built in that the shoulder pads are not secure. There is also no protection at the top of the shoulder. If the pads had stayed in place, my shoulder wouldn't be bothering me now. Some other "What were they thinking?" design issues are the strap around the bicep and the bicep padding. The strap around the bicep, attached to the shoulder pad, is very small. I'm 6' and 175 and the straps barely fit around my arm. The upper-arm guard is strangely attached to the front of the shoulder pad at about a 30 degree angle. My upper arm, like most, is directly below my shoulder. So I have to un-attach the pad from the shoulder pad to wear it on my bicep. This protector looks great in the picture. I only wish it worked as well.

Why did you choose this?
RevZilla Store
I am one ear new to motocross and just purchased the Leatt 5.5 neck brace. I wanted a chest protector that was made for a neck brace. I figured might as well go with the same brand. Upon looking at the Leatt chest protectors I like them and the protection looks superior to other chest protectors.

Can you remove the shoulder pads?
Stephen G on Mar 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they are completely removable. The white straps connecting them can be pushed through small slits and removed once the shoulder pad has been detached.

If you are not ever planning on using the pads. Leatt also makes the same chest protector minus the shoulder pads. If that is your intention look up "Leatt 5.5 Pro Lite Chest Protector". It's a few dollars cheaper too.
Is this designed for off-road use only? I wish to go both on and off-road, mostly road.
A shopper on Dec 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It can be used for both on road and off road applications. I wear this on dual sport rides. Personally I would rather use a nice on leather jacket with integrated armor for on road use.
I'm 5' 11" 130Lbs with a 34" wide chest. Will this chest protector adjust enough to fit me properly?
Thompson T on Jun 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Im 5'11" 140 and prefer medium sized shirts. This protector fits me very well right out of the box. It has allot of adjustability.
