Icon Variant Helmet
First week review!
I just got this helmet recently, so this is more of a first look review. This helmet is a drastic improvement from my old one. It's quieter, more snug, has much better airflow, and is super light comparatively. Out of the box it was tight but so is every helmet you get if you get the right size. The cheek pads are still a bit tight even now whereas the rest of the helmet has broken in nicely, but my cheeks don't hurt after a long ride or anything, but I'm assuming those will loosen up. I was very pleased when I found out that this model has a defog position for the face shield which will come in handy when it gets colder. I immediately changed to a gold mirrored lens and boy, it was a lot more of a pain than I thought it would be, but the gold mirrored has great night time vis as well so I don't really need to switch anymore. I've ridden at highway speeds and higher and can say that the peak is not a huge factor. I actually like the way it keeps my head straight. When head checking, you can feel that it is there but it in no way tries to rip your head off. You learn to head check a certain way with time that makes it even less noticeable, and looking up isn't a problem at all. Over-all a great helmet so far! I absolutely love the way it looks! Everyone who compliments it says I look like master Chief! Anyway, I will be back later for another review.

Awesome looking helmet but wind resistance is horrid
So this is the first ever helmet I have ever purchased and the main reason was because of how it looked and felt. I have no complaints with this helmet as long as I am going below 50 mph. Anything above that and it gets really hard to do head checks and my head is constantly jittering because of the wind. I don't know what it's like on other helmets but this makes faster speeds very uncomfortable. Other than that major flaw, I think everything else about it is great, it's quiet at high speeds, well ventilated, quite comfortable. Maybe I'll buy another helmet and keep this one for cruising around town!

Saved my life
This helmet saved my life. Wrecked when I hit gravel on an S curve in rural farm lands. Was knocked unconscious and slammed the living heck out of my head. Had I been wearing an inferior helmet I would have died that day. Already ordered another one to replace it as I loved the look but more importantly I loved that it more than did its job. When you look at the way it absorbed the impact its quite incredible, I regret not taking a picture to share.
On impact it spread the damage across the entire helmet instead of cracking it open where my head hit the pavement,
The visor is nice in summertime, along with excellent airflow.
These helmets also offer quite a bit of cusomization as you can change the guts, shield, and add a breathguard and/or chin guard.
Never fogged on me the entire time I had it, my only gripe is the sticker on the under side of the visor started peeling off almost immediately.
All in all a great helmet, my only thing is this is a very oval shaped helmet, so if you are a rounder head person you may need to go up a size but since Revzilla offers free returns for sizing I would not stress it too much.

A gorgeous helmet with only one real drawback.
As manufacturers go, Icon is on the forefront in terms style and brand design. This is evident in the Variant. This helmet looks amazing, has tons of airflow, is feature rich, is durable, and comfortable to wear. Of the multiple helmets I own, its the one I like to wear the most. And thats part of the one problem I have with it.
Changing shields is a pain. You must remove a plastic cover on each side, with a flat-blade. Then, you must use a tool of some kind to remove the philips-head screws that hold the shield in place. However, the grooves are rather wide, and the metal is soft. You WILL start to round out the screw grooves pretty much immediately. Icon includes a keyring flat-blade, but its somewhat useless. A quarter works better, but you still have to fight to get purchase, in order to ensure you don't round out the screw grooves. Once you're changed out, you have to try several times to get the angle right for replacing the screws. If you mis-thread, the screw can lock into the mount. Then you're replacing a helmet, as the mount is embedded in the fiberglass of the helmet, not the mounting system. To wit, you end up not being able to perform quick shield changes. This is kind of a downside if you're like me, and you carry a smoke shield for day riding, and a yellow shield for night riding. If I know I'm heading out in the day, and coming home after dark, I'll invariably grab one of my other helmets that I can quick change a shield on, so that I'm not locked into one option.
Now, don't get me wrong. The variant is my favourite helmet. I wear it whenever I can. But if I might need to switch shields, it quickly becomes my secondary choice.

Great for warm weather
overall it's a great product. Great airflow, pretty comfortable once it's broken in and the style is second to none. I've rides in about 40 degree weather with this thing and i think it catches too much air for colder weather riding. It's amazing in 90 degree summer heat though. This helmet runs a little small because of the narrow profile (I'm a medium in HJC and Shoei and a large fit perfectly for the variant). The first few weeks it was a little uncomfortable but once the padding is softened up and broken in, it's actually one of the more comfortable helmets I've worn. I would definitely recommend a mirrored visor over the smoked visor if you're going for that type of look due to the fact that the mirrored visor is a lot easier to see through at night than a mirrored visor. I would also recommend using the chin curtain that comes with the helmet because the large opening at the nose tends to catch a lot of bugs and debris at faster speeds. The indents for comm. speakers in the sides of the helmet are also a huge plus. Overall, I really enjoy the helmet and would absolutely recommend it.

Great helmet, make sure to order one size up
Great helmet. Looks great, plenty of room for speakers / microphone if you're using a Sena Bluetooth system or something similar. Air flow is fantastic and so is the field of vision. Some complain about the visor catching the wind and tugging on your head but I've never had that problem.
Definitely consider ordering a size up. I'm usually a size large. Ordered a large, when I got it, it went on okay but was painful to take off. It's since worn it and it's better, but I wish I had gotten the XL. Still rubs my face and can get uncomfortable on several hour rides. I don't think I'd be complaining about the comfort with an XL.
I also like that it comes with the clear and dark tinted visors.

I've had my Variant for a little over a season now and I still love it. It's comfortable, not too loud, and has a very good field of vision. I do have some complaints though, my biggest one being the face shield and changing it. When changing to the clear shield for night riding I'm always the last one in my group messing around with my helmet. The threads are very soft so be careful when tightening. I stripped them and Icon sent me a new helmet which I was very pleased with. Air flow could be better too. Overall it's a good helmet with good value not to mention it looks great with a mirrored shield!
