Icon Variant Hard Luck Helmet

Black ink sleeved across its raw construct shell speaks to the Hard Luck's felonious intent. 13's emblazoned across its flanks sneer politely at the society from which it was ostracized. The Icon Variant Hard Luck will never taste a silver spoon or know the loving embrace of a fat trust fund.

The Variant helmet from Icon. A wind tunnel refined shape, executed in a Fiberglass/ Dyneema/Carbon matrix, along with an dual-density EPS core provide critical impact energy management. Extensive venting and a removable HydraDry wicking liner provide increased comfort by reducing rider fatigue. The anti-lift visor directs and channels airflow as it reduces the glare from an unyielding UV assault, while the extended eyeport and zero distortion optics provide an unrivaled field of view. If the streets are your area of operation - equip yourself for the fight with the Icon Variant.

  • Fiberglass / Dyneema / Carbon Fiber shell
  • Industry leading multi-inlet ventilation system
  • Wind tunnel tested and refined anti-lift visor
  • Integrated chin EPS air channels reduce shield fogging
  • Distortion free precision optics anti-fog shield

Great cruising helmet This helmet is great for cruising speeds. If you're constantly wanting to go fast, this helmet isn't for you. Top visor piece gets caught in wind easily when trying to attempt fast speeds and can really be annoying when riding fast. My neck was killing me when i rode for about 2-3 hours, breaks here and there. I broke into the helmet and its really comfortable to me now and i just cruise with my bluetooth unit on with pandora running. September 28, 2015
Great helmet with one major flaw. I love this helmet, the anti-fog coating on the visor is absolutely amazing, any moisture simply runs off the visor and barely affects your vision. Wind noise at high speeds can be a bit loud, but that's expected. After a days ride in it I only had a slight headache, nothing too bad. My one serious issue with this helmet is the visor changing mechanism. Whoever designed it is a total drongo. I hate changing the visor, I feel as if I'm going to break the dang mechanism and visor. Idiotic design. That alone makes me not recommend this helmet if you'll be changing the visor often. Another issue I have is that the smoke / reflective visors aren't marked with the ECE certification, leading to people being fined for "not meeting the helmet standards" where I live. Coolest looking worst product Icon makes My girlfriend bought this helmet for me for our anniversary last month. I have loved every Icon product I have ever had till now. After several hundred miles I am ready to give my thoughts about this helmet. First, like most Icon stuff it is very well made with a fantastic aggressive style and a good soft inner lining. That ends the good stuff. The peek is very well designed to give very minimal lift up till about 60mph. At expressway speeds you do notice the peek and when you turn your head for a lane check you best be ready for a large lift from the peek. If you are not prepared it will feel like your head might get ripped off. Next, the fit is problematic if you are between sizes. Icon's size chart has some gaps between sizes so, if you are close to the max size for a large (like me) it will be very very tight. Don't even try it if you are really between sizes! The chin bar looks like it has lots of room but don't be fooled!!! Icon for some reason filled the inside of the chin guard with almost 2 inches of rubberized plastic. This is ok if you have a small nose but, I do not. Every time my nose rubs the inside of the chin guard. If you wear glasses the extra snug fit around the face makes it almost impossible to get your glasses on. And now the worst problem is the shield changing system. I am SHOCKED that Icon thought this is an "ok" system!!!! To change a shield it takes a tool and at least 10+ minutes and a bunch of frustration! In short DO NOT buy this helmet if you.. Are between sizes. Spend anytime on the expressway. Have a big nose. Wear glasses. Want to change shields for any reason at any time. September 19, 2015
Variant raiden is awesome I really liked this helmet when I tried it on at the touratech rally. I had narrowed my choices to this, the Arai xd4, and the Touratech Aventuro. After trying them all I decided on the raiden. Despite being heavier than my other choices I love this kid. I had a cheap Bilt helmet before and there is no comparison. The helmet flows massive air. I live in the deserts of Eastern Washington and regularly rise in 100 degree temps. This lid makes it feel like air conditioning and the liner sucks sweat like a vacuum. Also the design is wild and in your face. The white and blue match my BMW G650GS Sertao perfectly. If you are looking at high end helmets, consider the raiden Varriant. Love it. September 10, 2015
September 9, 2015
you will hear the noise form the air going in the vents but that is about the only complaint. The soft rubber part over the chin area is starting to come off already after about two weeks of owning the helmet. i did get caught in the rain one day thou so that may be why but i still think that shouldnt bother it. Great Supermoto Helmet I recently switched from motocross to the street on a Supermoto bike, and did a lot of research on a suitable helmet. I was between the AFX and this one, and I couldn't pass up this sale. The helmet is beautiful and very comfortable. The vision is excellent, and I have been caught in a downpour in it and it handled the rain well. Only downside is that the top vents (for me) are almost impossible to open, so I just leave them open and don't mess with it. Other than that, great helmet, I would definitely recommend. I get comments about it almost daily. September 7, 2015
Hooligan Approved! The Icon Variant has everything I was looking for in "road" sumo helmet. The styling is on point, visibility and ventilation are great, and cuts the wind surprisingly well for a visor helmet. The only thing keeping it from achieving a 5 star helmet rating for me are the time consuming steps required in face shield replacement and limited space for my in-helmet Bluetooth speakers. But a great helmet none the less. September 1, 2015

Jered M: No.... the graphics are not reflecticive at all. It is a black print over the construct type helmet. The white or grey as you may see it is acctually the material that makes up the outter shell. Its a great helmet i get lots of comments and questions about it every time i ride. Mar 12, 2014

A shopper asked: Hi.
I am interested in buying the Icon Variant helmet but I have read that the sizes are not always the same as others. For instance I have a large helmet, would it be the same size with the Variant? I need to get it right as I am in England and I don't want to have to return it if it does not fit.

Anton P: I also wear a large helmet, I wore a large icon Alliance helmet. I just ordered the large Varient and when you first put it on it's VERY tight but (I don't think a lot of people realize this) it "breaks in" the more you wear it. The hydra dry padding icon uses gets looser the more you wear it, it almost molds to the unique shape of your head and cheeks. There defiantly is not a huge diff in the sizing. You'll first put it on and think wow this is tight but depending on how often you ride it will loosen up to where it's not squeezing the hell out of your head and just fitting nice and snug. 2-3 weeks if you ride a couple of times a week. The icon Varient is defiantly the best helmet I have ever owned and I have been riding for 30 years. Icon nailed it with this design. LOVE IT! Jul 2, 2014

Leighton K: far as size goes I ordered a Nolan n91 in a medium and it fit great and tried my buddies variant on in a small and it fit good if Nolan is about average I'd say order a size smaller and other YouTube reviews say it runs big so order smaller too...other than that it's an awesome helmet people are always looking at different from all the rest get a Medium if your normally a large I'd say but you'll love can always order pieces of the inside padding to adjust it too. Matthew R: I went by the measurements on the site and I had to send it back to get a size up. Measurements said I was a large. Got it it couldnt even fit over my head. But after returned got the xl and it fit perfect. Id say go one size up. Seems to run small Jul 2, 2014

A shopper asked: Does the visor open on the hard luck variant? Jun 9, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
D E: First, YES the visor opens, has multiple positions and closes tight. Other points to note:
1. It ships with both a clear AND a smoke visor
2. The clear visor is installed
3. It ships with the tool and instructions to change them out.

Hope this helps and I am very pleased with the helmet, comfortable and quite. I have the Sena Bluetooth installed and no one can tell I am talking to them @70MPH.

Joe W asked: Is the visor on this helmet long enough to offer pretty decent shade from the sun? May 25, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Brian D: I use this helmet for the street. If im going up hill and the sun is straight in my face I can't really avoid getting blinded even by looking down, but flat roads I can just dip my head down a slight bit and avoid the sun. Jun 16, 2014

Joe W asked: In the video review for this helmet, Anthony says that it's a Hybrid helmet and it's not a Dual-Sport helmet. Where does it lack in the dual-sport side? What do dual-sport specific helmets offer that the Variant helmet doesn't? May 24, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Brian D: This helmet is a lot bigger then DS helmet because its also made to be used for street. I dont ride DS (want to soon), so Im not sure if the avg goggles would fit arould all the shell sizes. Im an XL and my snowboard goggles wont reach the back. Jun 16, 2014

A shopper asked: I went ahead and measured myself for the Variant sizing. I measured at around an XL. I then went to my local honda motorsports store and tried some on. I definitely could not fit the large onto my huge head. I then went to grab the XL and I still had trouble getting it on my head. With a good push I was able to get it on, but it fit very tightly to my face. I was wondering if there are any cheek pads I could get that would be a bit thinner? I'm afraid the XXL will be too big (they didn't have one for me to try). Aug 28, 2015
