Icon Variant Hard Luck Helmet

Black ink sleeved across its raw construct shell speaks to the Hard Luck's felonious intent. 13's emblazoned across its flanks sneer politely at the society from which it was ostracized. The Icon Variant Hard Luck will never taste a silver spoon or know the loving embrace of a fat trust fund.

The Variant helmet from Icon. A wind tunnel refined shape, executed in a Fiberglass/ Dyneema/Carbon matrix, along with an dual-density EPS core provide critical impact energy management. Extensive venting and a removable HydraDry wicking liner provide increased comfort by reducing rider fatigue. The anti-lift visor directs and channels airflow as it reduces the glare from an unyielding UV assault, while the extended eyeport and zero distortion optics provide an unrivaled field of view. If the streets are your area of operation - equip yourself for the fight with the Icon Variant.

Loved it at first Loved the helmet at first even though it arrived with a minuscule scratch on the shield and the top left vent doesn't close despite application of a small amount of silicon lube. I've had a chance to put about 500 miles on using it on both my 2013 GoldWing and 2015 CRF250l. Now either the shield or visor rattles so loudly it's distracting me from enjoying my ride. If I can't figure out how to get it to stop rattling it's a deal breaker and will be going back to ICON. Too bad because of all my 20 or so helmets I liked this one best at first J August 24, 2015
Looking for a head turner and that's what this is! All in all happy with this purchase. Use it with my WR250X here in Okinawa and was worried about the airflow. %100 humidity means all vents open so it's obviously a bit on the loud side. The smoke lens it came with has a slight slight warp brand new but seals because downpour rain at 70mph and I'm dry. Careful when switching lens not to damage tabs as some others have done. Later gonna go ride! July 7, 2015
Great helmet! I purchased the Battlescar helmet while on closeout, and I'm very happy I did. The day I got it, I took it right out and did a 150 mile ride through the mountains to really see what I got into. Pros: Awesome design! I was getting compliments from someone every time I stopped for gas about the helmet. It's really a unique look! It's also light and very comfortable. I rode for about 6 straight hours with no problem. Other helmets I own will start to hurt after a couple hours, but this Icon was comfortable all day. Next, visibility is great! Much better than a standard street helmet, and finally the airflow is just fantastic, and probably the best thing about it! I rode on a very hot/humid day, and while cruising with all the vents/slots open, it honestly feels like sticking your face out a car window. There is so much airflow into, and out of the helmet that when moving I didn't sweat at all. You can easily control how much air you want into/out of the helmet as well because Icon made the vents big enough that you can operate them easily with gloves on. Cons: The helmet is a little loud, but not more than my other full face HJC or Scorpions. The visor does cause lift when turning your head. I will hand it to Icon, when facing into the wind, there is almost no lift at all, and I can even look up without discomfort, but once you turn your head you can definitely feel the visor act like a sail as it pulls with the wind. I noticed that after doing over the shoulder checks for traffic, I'd have to slightly readjust the helmet by pulling it back down. It's not terrible, but definitely a bit of a nuisance. Finally the visor is not quick change, so you basically need to chose what you're going to wear for the day. For me, I generally ride day only, so the smoke visor is a permanent fixture for me, but for those who commute and need a clear lens for early mornings or evenings, making the switch requires a tool (Included in the box) and a few minutes of your time. Overall I'd definitely recommend this helmet to a friend. It's light, comfortable, great airflow and looks great. I ride a motard so I think this helmet is a perfect accessory for it! August 18, 2015
Air flow, Comfort and it just looks good. I bought this one for the high air flow, living in Las Vegas and commuting daily in 100+ heat I find this helmet is one of the better ones at circulating air. I am not disappointed in this helmet in any way August 17, 2015
Visor lift? No problem here I've had about a dozen various helmets and this one is my favorite, hands-down. So, there's really no aero-effect from the visor at really any legal speeds (75 and below) for me on my R1, and around the century mark and a little over, it's still ok, no neck injuries :-). Keep in mind this greatly depends on your bike (windscreen?) and your riding position, but I can't understand guys saying its a problem. Touching high speeds for a few seconds is one thing, but If you're sustaining speeds of around 100 or more, you need to be on a track and you need a track helmet with no visor... Airflow...just fantastic. I'm bald and I still get hot with pretty much every helmet out there, until I got this one. It really flows air like crazy in the face/forehead/chin area, so much so that I actually close vents around 65 degrees or cooler. In 90 degree/90% humidity weather, you're getting 90 degree/90% air flowing through, so it's still hot and no helmet is going to "air condition" its own ventilation. I wear size L in everything I've had, and there was no surprise here when I bought mine. There's no quick-release for the visor, and yeah, that kinda sucks but I'm ok with it. Just don't sneeze, and keep your nose clean if you do, and you can just wipe down the outside of it still attached. This isn't really a dirt-bike/off-road helmet, but that never stops some from using it as such. I can't speak to that. You should definitely buy one. August 15, 2015
Great helmet with a few flaws I love the design of the helmet, for me the visor on the dual sport design helps when riding into the sun. The airflow is superb on this helmet, not overly noisy but I do wear ear plugs. Came with dark and clear shield plus a chin skirt. I went with the Icon due to it being more of a true street helmet as I am not going to be using goggles with it. My only real complaint with this helmet is changing the shield. More than likely most people who purchase this helmet might not have to change the shield twice a day like I do during my commute. But Icon really came up short with not having a quick release system for this helmet. My Airframe I replaced this one with could be changed with my eyes shut or in the dark. This is the fist helmet that I have had that uses screws to retain the shield in over 8 years. But overall I like the helmet. August 15, 2015
Awesome helmet and looks great I love this helmet. It is really eye catching I got the green and also added the gold face shield. Everyone says it looks like its out of halo but it gets a lot of attention. The cheek pads come very bulky but I was told that as long as you go with the right size shell(as measured) you just get different size padding to custom fit to your head. Can't wait to see how it holds up. August 12, 2015
great helmet I have had this helmet for years and I love it. I originally bought it because I had a DRZ400sm and it did awesome with that bike but now I have a victory cross country and this helmet is way more comfortable and more stable in my opinion than the scorpion helmet I just currently bought. It currently is my go to helmet and very comfortable. It is on the loud side and when the weather gets cold it can get chilli with this helmet but overall I am very happy with this helmet. The one thing I would like to see from Icon is to get Snell testing done, I just feel for the price you pay for their products they should be willing to get a Snell rating for their customers. A shopper asked: Are any of the graphics on this reflective? Mar 12, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
Jered M: No.... the graphics are not reflecticive at all. It is a black print over the construct type helmet. The white or grey as you may see it is acctually the material that makes up the outter shell. Its a great helmet i get lots of comments and questions about it every time i ride. Mar 12, 2014

A shopper asked: Hi.
I am interested in buying the Icon Variant helmet but I have read that the sizes are not always the same as others. For instance I have a large helmet, would it be the same size with the Variant? I need to get it right as I am in England and I don't want to have to return it if it does not fit.

Anton P: I also wear a large helmet, I wore a large icon Alliance helmet. I just ordered the large Varient and when you first put it on it's VERY tight but (I don't think a lot of people realize this) it "breaks in" the more you wear it. The hydra dry padding icon uses gets looser the more you wear it, it almost molds to the unique shape of your head and cheeks. There defiantly is not a huge diff in the sizing. You'll first put it on and think wow this is tight but depending on how often you ride it will loosen up to where it's not squeezing the hell out of your head and just fitting nice and snug. 2-3 weeks if you ride a couple of times a week. The icon Varient is defiantly the best helmet I have ever owned and I have been riding for 30 years. Icon nailed it with this design. LOVE IT! Jul 2, 2014

Leighton K: Hey...as far as size goes I ordered a Nolan n91 in a medium and it fit great and tried my buddies variant on in a small and it fit good too...so if Nolan is about average I'd say order a size smaller and other YouTube reviews say it runs big so order smaller too...other than that it's an awesome helmet people are always looking at it...so different from all the rest get a Medium if your normally a large I'd say but you'll love it...you can always order pieces of the inside padding to adjust it too. Matthew R: I went by the measurements on the site and I had to send it back to get a size up. Measurements said I was a large. Got it it couldnt even fit over my head. But after returned got the xl and it fit perfect. Id say go one size up. Seems to run small Jul 2, 2014

A shopper asked: Is this helmet a balck and gray or is it have a purplish tint to it?.....Im looking more for grayish tone like the battlescar Mar 3, 2015

A shopper asked: Does the visor open on the hard luck variant? Jun 9, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
D E: First, YES the visor opens, has multiple positions and closes tight. Other points to note:
1. It ships with both a clear AND a smoke visor
2. The clear visor is installed
3. It ships with the tool and instructions to change them out.

Hope this helps and I am very pleased with the helmet, comfortable and quite. I have the Sena Bluetooth installed and no one can tell I am talking to them @70MPH.

Joe W asked: Is the visor on this helmet long enough to offer pretty decent shade from the sun? May 25, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Brian D: I use this helmet for the street. If im going up hill and the sun is straight in my face I can't really avoid getting blinded even by looking down, but flat roads I can just dip my head down a slight bit and avoid the sun. Jun 16, 2014

Joe W asked: In the video review for this helmet, Anthony says that it's a Hybrid helmet and it's not a Dual-Sport helmet. Where does it lack in the dual-sport side? What do dual-sport specific helmets offer that the Variant helmet doesn't? May 24, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Brian D: This helmet is a lot bigger then DS helmet because its also made to be used for street. I dont ride DS (want to soon), so Im not sure if the avg goggles would fit arould all the shell sizes. Im an XL and my snowboard goggles wont reach the back. Jun 16, 2014
Reply to Brian Good answer? Yes (2) No (0)
A shopper asked: I went ahead and measured myself for the Variant sizing. I measured at around an XL. I then went to my local honda motorsports store and tried some on. I definitely could not fit the large onto my huge head. I then went to grab the XL and I still had trouble getting it on my head. With a good push I was able to get it on, but it fit very tightly to my face. I was wondering if there are any cheek pads I could get that would be a bit thinner? I'm afraid the XXL will be too big (they didn't have one for me to try). Aug 28, 2015
