HJC CL-Y Youth Helmet - Solid
Bought this for my 5 year old grandson. Fit is good -- and my other son's girl friend uses the same helmet, comfortably, on some decent rides (>100 m
nice. said it all in the summary.
all the standard features you'd expect in a mid range, full face helmet.

Good Helmet for Small Heads
There doesn't seem to be much of a selection of youth road helmets, at least that I could find. However, if you need a nice, well constructed, and safe helmet for your kids then this one fits the bill.
It seems just as well made as any HJC lid and I know I feel better with my son wearing it when he's on a bike with me.

Poor quality, cheaply made, lousy company
All of the moving parts on this helmet are cheap plastic. The breath shield is a joke and cracks easily. The base plates for the visors are flimsy and are held in by cheap plastic screws. It's like a toy. It's difficult to change out visors -- if it's not perfectly lined up, your visor will come flying off! I would never buy this helmet for a kid let alone an adult. HJC warranty policy is terrible -- they do not stand behind their products. Don't waste your money or risk your our your child's life with this garbage helmet! Helmet is also noisy (whistles!) and ventilation is minimal. Padding is poor quality and the snaps don't even line up right. Try a different brand.

Bought this for my children and they really like it. A quick buckle like my Nolan N85 would be easier for a child to use.

Great for adults too.
I recently downgraded to this helmet from a Shoei Qwest (great helmet btw) because I needed a smaller shell. Qwest size small fits almost same size as CL-Y large. Overall I prefer the CL-Y because the shell is significantly smaller than any adult size helmet I've tried. The smaller shell is also much lighter which makes shoulder checks easier and puts less strain on the neck during long highway rides. Although there's a big difference in overall quality - the most notable is the durability and solid feel of the Shoei shield. The CL-Y also allows a great amount of air flow to come from underneath and through the front side vents which cannot close (may try blocking them in Winter). I bought a chin curtain and breath box which help with that a little. The cheek pads were a bit too thin for me so I bought the size small pads that makes the helmet snug on my thin face. Also looks pretty cool with a dark smoke shield - just wish HJC made a more solid shield like Shoei.
