I wanted some inexpensive boots that would provide good protection and not look too much like track boots. FYI , I don't have other riding boots for comparison. I always used tactical boots to ride in, but now I don't like laces (after a snag a peg). In addition, I realized that I like a thinner and less aggressive sole to move/slide easily over the pegs. So these boots met all my criteria and I feel like I got what I paid for.
The leather is thick enough that I believe that they would easily protect you from a slide or a mild impact. I wish they had a little more ankle protection, but they are definitely much better than regular boots.
The airflow is pretty good in the feet area, but you get almost no airflow in the area above the ankle. If the temp is over 75F, these things are hot & sweaty above the ankles. I hit some 60F weather, and they were perfect.
I think they run a bit large. I am typically an 8.5 size, and I ordered these in 9 as I do all my shoes to make sure they are not too small. In many cases the 9's fit me just right. These are big enough that I wish I would have ordered an 8.5. I don't mind the extra room while riding. I can add some socks though, so np, but when walking around they are a bit more "sloppy" than I like. I don't blame the boot for this, obviously.
I had to wear them about 4-5 times before they became comfortable. It didn't take long at all, and they weren't very uncomfortable during break-in which was nice. They are comfortable enough to walk around in for a while. Most of the discomfort is because of the height and material around the shin and calf. It is not uncomfortable really, they are just not sneakers, etc.
The Velcro seems strong, the zippers feel solid and zip up without drama. The traction on road surfaces is adequate. Mine have no obvious flaws or defects. They seem to offer good protection and certainly they should be much better than any kind of street shoes. So if you are in the market for some decent riding boots at a good price, I would definitely recommend that you consider these. Ride safe!
