Moderate protection, moderate price, great for avoiding saddle rash
I bought these to solve two issues - saddle rash and the need for hip protection pads. Two consecutive 7hr days of riding trails in Moab left me with absolutely no saddle rash at all. So far these shorts are the only thing that has worked for me to combat this effect at the cost of riding a touch high in the crotch, similar to boxer briefs. I will be bringing these shorts with me on the TAT as one of two pairs of riding shorts. I may get non-padded riding shorts (Tug 03?) as my secondary pair and here's why:

They come up short as it pertains to hip protection - if you pull the shorts high to cover your hips you're singing an octave high. If you wear them low on your waist you have crotch comfort but very little hip protection. The hip pad stops where you need it most, up high around the waistband. If it had adequate coverage, this relatively soft pad could guard your hip bones in a typical off road crash situation (on dirt/gravel 35mph or less). The inadequate coverage seems like a design flaw in most riding shorts designs I've seen. In the past I've worn football hip pads on a belt to provide this protection and if I were getting into some serious rocky mountain riding I would bring additional pads along, so its probably not worth the extra coin for the padded shorts.

Not too bad but could be better
Got these to have better protection as i ride in kevlar jeans I bought the large size as I'm a 34-36 waist should have got the XL as these a just fitting me, the protection is ok could have a bigger side patch to protect more of the side, a good feature is a padded patch in the crotch area which is a little thin but not too bad for my rock hard 2013 zx6r seat.

I chose these shorts because I want more padding for a long ride, and a little extra protection in case of a spill when wearing riding jeans instead of over pants.

what is the difference between this one and the impact riding shorts by EVS?

Please give me a description of what an "EVA" pad is. Is it simply a foam pad or actually an energy absorbing/shock protection material? Durability? Thanks.
A shopper on Oct 4, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The EVA padding is firm but flexible, but not foam. I'm not qualified to provide technical information about the energy/shock protection properties, but it seems similar to the padding in my other protective gear. I've been wearing them for over a year with no sign of wear.
