Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S20 Front Tires

The S20, which incorporates the innovative technologies developed for MotoGP tires, is one of Bridgestone's sport radial premium brand products. Using new patterns and new compounds, in the S20 Bridgestone offers durability and long wear life while improving grip performance at both high temperatures and low temperatures, such as immediately after start and in wet conditions. Also, by optimizing the tire structure in the S20, Bridgestone was able to increase the running contact pressure and contact surface and focus on high performance in dry conditions and stable handling.

The BATTLAX series is Bridgestone's premium brand of on-road motorcycle tires. The top of the line of the BATTLAX tires are the MotoGP class tires used in the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) road race series, for which Bridgestone is the official tire supplier. Bridgestone offers a wide range of BATTLAX tires, from touring to racing and from small motorcycles to large motorcycles.

Principal technologies and product features:

  • New Pattern: Through the optimization of groove positioning and the use of wide grooves, the tire offers both comfortable handling and improved grip performance in dry and wet conditions.
  • New Compound: Continued use of NanoPro-Tech, RC Polymer (for motorcycle tires). All aspects of compound composition were reevaluated, and as a result Bridgestone was able to maintain long wear life while achieving high grip performance in a wide range of temperature conditions, from high to low.
  • 3LC (3 Layer Compound) Optimized Tread Pattern Design: By optimizing tread pattern design for the new compound, Bridgestone has achieved high levels of both wear life and grip performance.

  • Dual Compound (3LC) is used for both front and rear tires
  • Contact patch is optimized to improve contact with the road
  • Performance is maintained throughout the life of the tire
  • Better wet performance than BT-016 PRO due to new pattern and compound
  • Technologies used include: Mono-Spiral Belt, Silica Rich EX, RC Polymer and Nano Pro-Tech to achieve high levels of all-around sport bike performance

Great tire. Good Value. Medium service life. I wrote a similar review for the Rear version of this tire. I used these on my 1997 VFR750f in 70 profile front and rear. OEM is 60 profile, but I've had no problems riding with 70. Excellent grip even on cold and wet roads. Siping isn't too deep but I had no problems even in heavy rain. I kind of like riding in the rain and don't hold back much. They are finished after 5k miles, with maybe a hundred miles on gravel roads. I'm getting down to the inner rubber in the rear center and will ride them for another week or two until I have a chance to mount new buns. They wore very nicely and even now have kept their round profile front and rear, rather than going triangular in the front and square in the rear as some other brands have done for me on this bike. Front and rear tires wore at about the same rate which is also good. I highly recomend this tire for the old VFR. Now if they could only make it go 15k miles.... Nothing bad to say. May 1, 2015
Great Grip! battlax bt 16 before this s20.. and this new ones have more grip, just make sure to align the marks and balance the tire. definitely better! i hope more life too! February 2, 2015
Great Tires, Great Grip, Decent wear. Got 6000 miles out of my stock set on my 2013 GSXR1000 with aggressive street riding, no burnouts, not many curves around here. Heat up quick and never lose traction. January 15, 2015
Great tire! I've only put about 500 miles on this new tire, but so far it's great! Heats up quickly in cold weather. Used them in Chicago at ~40F and the tires have great traction and heat up quickly. January 5, 2015
Feels great, happy with purchase. I had much older BT-57 Battleaxs and upgrading to the S20 made a huge difference in how the bike feels, I'm much more confident on it now. Moto GP approved after all. August 4, 2014
Great tire. Mounted this tire on my Ducati 696 monster. Great grip (dry road - I did not used it in the rain yet). Very smooth transition between rolling band and side of the tire when turning. June 9, 2014
great tire performance for the money.. great tire handling, on dry, wet and cold days.... tire has ben put to he test by me... tire's heat up fairly quickly for traction...bikelooks good with the matching set... December 9, 2013

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Frank G: Use on the street as well as the track. Have about 4K miles on them now. Work great on the street. They do seem to get flat in the center pretty quick. Had plenty of grip on the track. Only one track day with these tires so far, but think they may last through 3 track days depending on your speeds. I had plenty of melted rubber build up on the edges on the tires. CBR1000RR. Christian G: This is on of the few tires that still come in a 16 inch front...need new rubber for my 98 cbr900rr fireblade!! :) May 17, 2015

Donnie B: I chose this tire because of the Bridgestone Battlax lineup review done here on Revzilla's video channel. They recommended the S20 over the OEM Battlax's that came on my 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R because it grips better and is a better value for the money.

I'll definitely agree. The S20s are definitely better tires and a tremendous value.

Jarik V: I've got the (worn) Bridgestone Battlax BT016-Pro on my bike now, and they are great. Since these are the replacement of the BT016s, it was an easy choice. Feb 3, 2014

stephanie m: Bought this for my sons CBR600 based on recommendations from Anthony. Tire looks great and can't wait for him to break it in to see how it performs for him and how long it lasts. Sep 11, 2013
Antares Z asked: Hi.
Would it be a good idea to use a battlax s20 front and a BT 023 in the rear of my ninja 650R? I'm thinking it would serve two purposes: I like more grip in the front but the BT023 front is a mono-compound tire. My front tire also lasts longer than the rear. So by using the S20 in the front, I get the grip I want and hopefully it wears out at the same rate as the rear so I can change them a the same time. I know it has something to do with the tire profile but I don't know much.

Kellen I: I'm currently running that setup on my sv650 and loving it. I definitely notice more front end feel and grip. It has been a definite improvement over the bto23 front and rear. So far they have been wearing at about the same rate, I'm at about 3k and they have loads more life. My dad, who rides a Kawasaki Versys has the same combo and his last set lasted 7k. And yeah they were toast at the same time.. Perfect for a 650 twin and as far as profile goes, pretty similar, I'd say turn in is quicker too. Go for it! Sep 11, 2013

Kellen I: Update: down to the wear bar at 4700 on the s20 front. Bto23 still has plenty life left. Tires we're put on at the same time.
Time for a new s20 I guess. May 13, 2014
christopher b: Antares,

I actually did the reverse, I got a nail in my back tire @ 700 miles so I replaced it with the S20 but kept the BT023 on the front. After riding for about 1 week I ordered an S20 for the front. These are two very different tires not only from a grip stand point but also from a contour standpoint. The S20's have a more sloped side, from the center, than do the BT023, so your cornering will feel different.
The grip of the S20's is off the hook! I've run 2CT's and Diablo Rosso Corsa on my 2012 Ninja 1000 and found the S20's to provide the best grip and tread life.
As for S20 tread life, I have just over 10,000 miles on my front tire, looks like it will NOT have to change it till next season, and changed my rear at just over 8,000 miles. I didn't ride the rear tire down to the belts but it looked close.
So to answer your question, Yes, you could go with that configuration, personally I wasn't comfortable with how my bike was handling around the turns with the two different tires.

Casey F: Hi. As far as grip from the s20 front it will grip a little better than the 23. However the s20s track a lot better and have a better water channel. I never liked the 23s because the feedback wasn't all there. As for uneven wear the s20 wears pretty even. I've used 4 sets and changed both tires at the same time. If you had a liter bike it would be a different story but even with my zx10 they track evenly. I would run them s2 front and rear if it was me Sep 12, 2013

Jonathan W: I have the S20 -Front / BT023 - Rear Setup. It works very well on my bike. I prefer the s20 front over the BT023 for the same reasons you specified. So far the wear is very well and the combination works great for my daily riding and when I like to have some fun on the weekends.

So far I have around 4k on front and rear and they seem to be wearing the same.

Alex C: The only thing with s20's are the fact that they are track tires they grip well but don't last long. I get around 4k miles before I replace both front n rear. U might wanna get an bt16 for the front n it will last u longer. Unless u have $$ burning a hole in ur pocket. Sep 12, 2013

Tyler G: The multiple compound structure serves the purpose of increasing edge grip by using a softer compound on the side and harder center compound to increase lift. That being said, the s20s are great tires. Yes you can use different fronts and rears. I personally wouldn't, I'd replace both. On the street the front will usually outlast 2 rears. There's nothing wrong with that. S20s would be a good switch for a street rider wanting more edge grip and longevity but you're rear will still outwear the front even more so if you leave the 023. A S asked: I have a 2007 Gsxr 600 the front tire is 120/70-17 will the 120/60-17 fit that and if so will it have any kind of impact on performance? Nov 11, 2015
