Do not go by the pictures!
I just received my new Bell Vortex helmet (and I absolutely love it already) and my "light smoke" tinted visor. It's barely tinted at all, much much much lighter than in the picture! The picture looks like it allows about 40% light transmission (How much visible light it lets pass through it) but in actuality its around 75% or more. If you want something that is tinted just a little tiny bit this is perfect for you, it would be a good late dawn early dusk visor, but if you plan on using this during the middle of the day bring your sunglasses.

I included a picture of the stock visor (left) and the "light smoke" (right) for comparison.

Dark Gold Iridium
The dark gold iridium looks AWESOME! It's dark and onlookers can't see through it in the daytime. For the rider it blocks the sun out, even when riding directly into the sun it does a good job of blocking the sun and sunglasses are not needed.

I have been caught riding at night with this shade on more than a few times and it's not terrible. You just need to be careful because obviously it does inhibit your vision. Bright headlights will help you and if you are riding in a small city or lit town then it's not too bad either. Dark highways can be a bit harder to navigate but again just ride slower and be careful.

I have had this shade for two years now and have a few scratches on it as it does scratch relatively easily. But after 2 years of riding and thousands of miles the visor still looks great and is holding up just fine.

Pretty Fantastic
I'll probably never ride in daylight hours without a tinted shield again. This is my first one and I was worried that it'd be so dark that it messed with my vision, this is not the case at all.

Great Day Time Shield
I bought this dark shield so I wouldn't have to wear sunglasses while riding. It does a great job of keeping the sun out of my eyes without any issues with glare or vision. It is dark enough that people cannot see my face even in the sunlight unless they get really close (within 3 feet). I had to wear it at night a few times and it does not bother me. I didn't feel like there was a safety concern and I didn't feel like I needed to change it out for the clear shield at night.

Great shield for my Bell helmet/Dark Smoke
I have the matte black Qualifier Bell Helmet which comes with clear shield. This dark smoke visor completely blacks out my helmet. Looks awesome and I get a ton of positive comments. The dark smoke shield lets plenty of light in all conditions. It is not too dark. It is very easy to click onto helmet. Shield replacement takes about 10 seconds. Highly recommend this shield.

Dark Iridium Blue
Does exactly what you'd expect in a replacement face-shield. I have the deep blue iridium color and it is indeed very dark. You cannot see through the mirror coat at all, which is very nice. When riding in daylight, the sun is definitely no longer a pain if you choose one of the colors designed to lessen brightness.

Riding at night with a dark face shield is obviously not recommended, so there's the downside if you order one of the darker ones but I am very happy with the dark blue.

My only complaint is the care of the fancier mirrored ones. My blue shield gets finger prints and scratches very easily. When trying to clean it up, unless you have just the right type of cloth you mostly just smear stuff around on it. Once you figure out a good cleaning option its smooth-sailing.

Dark vs Light Tint Visor
I originally wanted the automatic tinting shield but decided against it because of reviews stating it is too light. I did not want to use a mirrored shield this time as they scratch way too easy and scratches are annoying. So I decided on a dark and light tinted shield to see which would work best. The light shield was too light, almost like nothing at all. I was concerned that the dark shield would be too "blue." I had an HJC dark tinted shield that was that way. The Bell dark tinted shield is not. In full sun the dark shield made everything look a little hazy. Not so much that it was annoying or distracting. I just happened to notice it after about 1-1/2 hours of riding. For me, the dark shield was just right. I would not recommend using it at night as it would be way too dark.

Dark Blue Iridium NOT for commuters
So I have a black tinted visor, but I wanted something else so I went with the dark blue iridium lens. I've had iridium lenses before on sunglasses, so I didn't expect this lens to be much different, boy was I wrong. Let's start off my saying my bike is mostly a commuter bike. I ride to and from school on it every day when I can, which is about 70 miles round trip. The smoke shield I had was great for this, and held up well.

So I got this blue iridium shield, and I loved the look of it. I popped it on and bam, the helmet looks awesome. I noticed here that there was smudging on the side of the visor where I pushed it to get it on. I thought, I'll just wipe it off, but it didn't come off. I thought this was fine it was on the side and didn't bug me, although it's mildly annoying. I didn't take it for a ride as it was late, but I had to commute the next morning so I knew I'd ride it then. I left the next morning, about 9am my time, pretty late in the day and I rode through some unexpected fog. Given the length of the commute this sometimes happens, I didn't think much of it, except that the visor doesn't have anti fog on the outside which is slightly annoying, but I rode through it no problem like normal.

I finally finished my commute, took my my helmet, and the visor is COMPLETELY RUINED. There are smudges and scratches all over it, from fog! When I put my hand, which had a glove on, to pull the visor down was a completely different color other than the blue now, it's yellow! Everywhere else there's scratches and smudges that run from purple to yellow in color.

I don't abuse my stuff, and I expect a lens to hold up to some minor fog. This is a complete letdown and I just wasted $70 on this visor. I would NOT recommend this to anyone unless you ride in perfectly sunny 24/7 weather at all times.

Easy on, easy off.
Easy on, easy off. The problem, if there is one, is that a person unfamiliar with the mechanics of the face shield (like your rider) may rip it off of the helmet without much problem. That's why I needed a new one. With shipping, the shield was $42, and that seems like too much when the helmet new cost under $200. Other than that, no problems.

I want to buy ether the Light gold irdium or dark gold irdium. Will the dark gold be a darker tint on the inside or will it be the same as the light gold but with a darker gold color on the outside?
A shopper on Mar 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The dark gold visor is MUCH darker when viewing from the inside, as well as being a darker gold on the outside. I actually own both light and dark gold visors and have only used the dark gold during a very bright track day in FL. I use the light gold for daily use, as the dark gold is like having blinders on in anything but full sunny conditions.

Hope that helps.

Will this fit the Revolver EVO as well?
Brad K on Jun 1, 2014
BEST ANSWER: yes
Does the shield come with a bag or some kind of storage?
A shopper on Jun 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, it doesn't come with a bag or any way or storing it.
What is the purpose for the screwed in black plastic piece on the shield near the left side hinge?
Michael L on May 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It looked to be a shield lock, but on my Bell Vortex the helmet did not have the locking mechanism so it didn't do anything. I believe the the Star did have the complete lock on the helmets I checked out at the stores.
Is the "dark silver iridium shield" mirrored, or you can see people faces?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2011
BEST ANSWER: It's mirrored, my brother has it, and you can't see inside it at all, even when the sun is shining right in his helmet.
How do the light and dark blue iridium shields compare in terms of visibility at night? My morning commute is always after sunrise, but I occasionally have to ride back after sunset and I don't want to have to be concerned about swapping them before I leave work.
David D on Feb 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It depends on the type of road you commute on and weather conditions. I road several times at night with no issues when it was clear using darker visors. But it was usually bright freeways with plenty of traffic. Throw in fog, rain, or lack of lights (no cars, signs, or streetlights as reference) and you might find yourself squinting. If you need to ride when visibility is limited, consider keeping a clear visor handy. Or invest in the transitions darkening visor if you don't want to carry extra shields
So this face shield fits any size bell qualifier helmet? For example, will it fit both a medium size and an XL size helmet?
A S on Dec 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Actually it doesn't fit precisely. I've purchased Bell Qualifier Helmet size L and the tinted shield. When I replaced the stock clear shield with tinted one I realized that the latter one is little bit bigger and it doesn't tight enough so there are holes between the shield and rubber gasket of the helmet. May be helmet size XL will have a good match for these shields but not size M or L. Since there are holes between the rubber gasket and the shield it's neither rainproof nor noise proof.
i bought the white arrow helmet and am trying to decide between the dark iridium gold or dark blue, wanted to know which one is harder to see my face from the outside ( which is more mirrored), and which looks cooler in your opinions?
Trevor C on Aug 7, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure about the dark iridium blue, but if its identical to the dark iridium gold then the only difference is the color. This shield is pretty much like a full mirror shield. Not see through at all from the outside. Looking out through this shield is great for bright sunny days and its as described dark. Day time use great, night not so much. I picked gold only cuz I already have a blue shield on my HJC, just wanted to try something different. But the gold looks good on my RS-1 Motogears or whatever its called.
Hey might be buying Bell Qualifier helmet. Looking at differant face shield specifically the dark gold irridium. Is the it reflective yellow or see thru?
A shopper on Jun 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: never bought a Bell irridium shield but the Nolan one I owned was just like looking through a smoke tint and it matched the red metal flake looked cool
Is Rain X safe to use on these visors? I have the clear that came with my helmet and a transitions visor as well. I live in a place that rains quite a bit. I'd like to use a product like Rain X but I've read that it could possibly damage or make the visor brittle. Do you know if Rain X is safe to use on these? If not is there a product that is safe to use?
A shopper on Sep 14, 2012
BEST ANSWER: We would not recommend using Rain-X on any visor/faceshield. Rain-X is a petroleum based product, and after prolonged use it will break down the polycarbonate chemical structure of the visor. This will result in the face shield becoming more likely to crack or break in an impact. Using any product similar to Rain-X (IE petroleum based) will have the same effect, and the best thing to do is just to keep the visor as clean as possible. If the surface of the visor is clean and smooth, the rain will not have any dirt to stick to, and should bead off the visor fairly well. When cleaning the visor use a very soft, lint free micro fiber cloth along with some warm water. Be very gentle and when drying the visor use a soft, dry, lint free micro fiber cloth.
