Bell Vortex Helmet

Nothing beats a solid color to highlight the stylish design of a helmet. The Bell Vortex is available in a choice of gloss black, matte black, white or silver; four classic color choices in the riding spectrum. Developed in Bell’s state-of-the-art Santa Cruz, California design center, the Vortex borrows heavily from its big brother the Star. With a solid compliment of features the Bell Vortex is a great choice as a primary helmet for everyday use that can also transition to the occasional track day. A killer price rounds out the package and gives you a big bang for your buck.

Features:

  • Velocity Flow Ventilation system with FlowAdjust for maximum stability and temperature control with minimal noise and buffeting
  • Lightweight composite polycarbonate alloy shell
  • Contour cheek pads (by means of stacked foam, not hand cut)
  • Removable and washable, antibacterial/antimicrobial interior comfort liner
  • Padded Wind collar to drastically reduce wind/road noise
  • Integrated speaker pockets for audio speakers
  • ClickRelease for the fastest, easiest, tool-free shield swaps ever
  • Clear NutraFog II superior anti-fog, anti-scratch and UV protected shield. Dark tint and other shields available for purchase separately
  • Five-year warranty
  • Weight: 1600g
  • Certification: Snell M2010, DOT

Note: Helmet ships with clear faceshield only. Replacement shields can be purchased separately HERE: Bell Vortex Shield.

Note: Helmet may come with either the magnetic strap keeper or standard chin strap snaps

RevZilla's Opinion of the The Bell Vortex Helmet

The Bell Vortex Helmet has grown to be one of the top selling and more ubiquitous ~$200 sport helmets in the RevZilla family. The light weight, Snell Rating and ability to use the Bell Photochromic shield allow the Bell Vortex Helmet to cover a lot of the bases the typical sport or track day rider is looking for in a reasonably priced helmet. Many times we see this type of functionality only available in helmets over the $300 mark. In the 3/4 or tuck position the Bell Vortex Helmet will provide a great solution in just about any spirited or sport riding scenario. If you find a graphic or color that suits your taste and you have an intermediate oval head shape, the Bell Vortex is a great option.

Almost perfect if you modify it
For my full review of the Vortex, look at the Flying Tiger reviews. This review is my solution to the unnecessary amount of wind noise.

In my previous review, I very snakily said "JUST WEAR EARPLUGS," But earplugs actually don't work. They block out everything BUT the wind noise. So foot in the mouth there. The wind noise is unbearable. It's so loud, my ear drums actually crackle at times. That's bad. That's really bad! I read somewhere that putting tape over the side vents eliminates the noise. So I tried it and it totally works.

But no one wants tape on their helmet. The answer: fill the side vents with caulk! You don't lose any ventilation. Bell very stupidly put them too far forward for them to actually work, hence the lack of ventilation and ungodly noise. I used clear Phenoseal. Get a small tube, not the big one meant for a caulk gun. Fill the vent from the outside only down to the mesh. You don't have to fill it to the eps. Just block the vent. Wipe away the excess and let it dry. It works perfectly. The Vortex is louder than my Custom 500. Yes really. Caulking the side vents makes it dead silent. The transformation is amazing. Do it!

Loud, Excellent Protection. Crash Tested
Helmet is loud, you will get a lot of wind noise on the highway. If your going out on long sustained high-speed rides be prepared to pop in some earplugs or lose some hearing. Ok, other than that its an excellent helmet. Airflow is great, I used it through a central Alabama summer and it was just fine. I have crash tested it and would say the protection is excellent. I high sided at around 60mph, give or take 10mph, and landed on my head and shoulder. No concussion and no doubt in my mind that the helmet worked. I ordered another one despite the noise for that reason alone. If you don't have a lot to spend on a helmet, want maximum protection, and can deal with the extra noise, this helmet is an excellent choice.

Awesome helmet, awesome company.
I waited about a year before I gave my review on the Bell Vortex.

The thing that suprised me the most was the quality of the helmet (especially for the price). The inside materials feel very nice against your face (something you don't get with under $200 helmets). This is very important to me and was one reason why I originally wanted to splurge for an Arai. The ventilation is okay (used in 50 and 100 degree weather) but is a bit noisy. However, this can be easily remedied with a little plugging material on the back vent, behind the ear. After the modification, it is perfect. I should note that the easy release visor is an awesome feature.

Also, Bell has great customer service (RevZilla-like quality). I think they'll replace your crashed helmet for a new one for a reduced cost. Plus, I believe its an American based company.

Snell2010!

The only thing is that the Vortex looks a bit bulky. My white 2xl makes me look like a Stig bobblehead.

I would not hesitate on purchasing a Bell Vortex.

Great helmet for those on a limited budget
I've had this helmet since 04/2011 when I started riding. I selected it because of the price and because it carries a Snell 2010 rating; I think HJC is the only other company (at the time at least) to offer a Snell 2010 rated helmet at a cheaper price. I tried on a couple of HJC helmets and didn't care for them. It fits my head perfectly in a size Medium with pressure evenly around my head. My head shape is more of the oval/oblong shape than round. The cheek pads were firm but have broken in nicely but are still snug. Airflow is not too bad but as most reviews on the web have stated, it is loud! When I first started learning to ride I didn't want to wear earplugs for fear of blocking out important noises. Now that I know better, I have to say that earplugs are a must with this helmet. Anything above 50mph is unbearable for me. The vents are easy to locate and operate while riding and wearing gloves. The chin and brow vents flow great, the top vents don't seem to flow as well. I keep a shaved head and I can barely feel air on my scalp when at highway speeds. The actual inlet holes are not as large as the vent openings are, they're about a 1/3 that size - just a little oval recessed in the vent opening.

The quick release system for the visor makes it a snap to swap visors for the most part. It takes an extra few seconds when swapping on my smoked visor because it's dark enough that it's harder to line up the visor into the helmet unless you're operating in bright light. The clear visor fogs up a bit when stopped at traffic lights in cooler weather. Cracking the visor clears it up right away as soon as I start rolling. Another little feature I thought was cool is there's a magnet sewn into the chin strap and a tab on the D-ring so that when you loop it through the D-ring and snug it down, you can affix the strap to the D-ring to keep the strap from flapping around. I hadn't seen this feature on other helmets I'd looked at so if this is a common feature then it's news to me. Problem is that the fabric stitched over that magnet started peeling off on both sides so I had to glue it down to keep the magnet from falling off.

Fit and finish seems pretty good. Definitely not up there with Arai or Shoei, but then again the Vortex is sub-$200 so it's to be expected. The paint on the plastic vents has chipped as has the flat black finish which sucks, not sure if it's from rocks hitting it or just negligence on my part in handling/storing it. Oddly enough, the plastic parts are red underneath the black paint. Another issue is, and I'm not sure if it's the visors or the helmet, but the seal around the visor is not remotely air tight; with all vents closed I still feel a moderate breeze blowing in my face.

Overall, I'd still recommend this helmet, but if it's in your budget for a higher end helmet, definitely go for it.

Great protection for under 200.
I got this as a trade up from an old arrow and it was a great decision. The helmet fits fantastically and just feels better and more protective. I also really enjoy the fact that it meets SNELL 2010. Fantastic helmet at a very good price.

Only one gripe about this
The helmet is very comfy and the airflow was surprising for a sub $300 helmet. Its a little noisy but it was expected and not really that bad.
My only gripe about this helmet is that the "Bell" logos are not removable stickers like some helmets have. I prefer the solid look without advertising for a company. Will need to put some over lays on it if you like the sleek blacked out look.

Bell delivers-premium quality, extremely low price
The overall construction and quality of this helmet is unbelievable for the price tag. With SNELL 2010 safety ratings, magnetic strap, quiet noise level, and fluid air flow, its something that you would expect from a shoei or $500+ lid. On top of all of this Bell backs their product with a 5-Year warranty. Check pads are snug as expected from new helmet, more than satisfied on this decision as a first helmet, Bell delivers.

Great first helmet.
If you're looking for a awesome cheap track ready sexy helmet this is exactly what you are looking for. I get so many head turns in this helmet with the gloss black and deep chrome visor. As far as comfortability on my slight oval head it gets a tid bit uncomfortable on my third hour of riding but that just lets be know when I have to take a break. A lot of room in the ears and accommodate ear buds very well. taking off the helmet with them on though is a little uncomfortable. But listen as far as I am concerned for a first helmet you can't go wrong with bell. the money you save on this helmet can go towards more gear to keep you riding. 20 puppies in side cars out of 22.

Great helmet for a great price
Bottom line, if you're looking for a quality helmet for under $200, get this. The matte black finish is spot on, very clean, airflow thru the helmet is very good. It's light, vision is good, DOT and Snell approved. Can't ask for much more..... My girlfriend ordered this one for herself after I got the Vortex Band, she liked it so much. Also got a dark smoke shield with it, changing out the lenses on this helmet was the easiest and quickest i've ever done on one.

As far as fit, My girlfriends head measured within the S size, and it fits perfectly. My head measured within XS and it fits perfect.

Great helmet, I bought this to replace my HJC that didn't fit me all that well. Its great quality and even better when paired with theTransitions SolFX Photochromic Face Shield. it is a little too loud. One remedy has been to seal the openings/vents next to the ears as this won't effect air flow. this makes the noise easier to handle. With that said, after sealing the ear openings, id recommend and buy again.
Cory R on Apr 10, 2016
safety quality of the Bell helmets, and the oval shape that better fits my elongated head shape. too many helmets are round and create pressure points on the forehead.

BEST ANSWER: Never mind - nailed it, metaphorically speaking.
Recently purchased the vortex helmet, the cheek pads are super tight. Looking to buying smaller pads, What cheek pads fit this helmet?

BEST ANSWER: Here is the link from my past order:
https://www.revzilla.com/product/bell-vortex-cheek-pads
my head is 22 1/4inches. should I get a medium or a small?
A shopper on Sep 20, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Depends. If you're 22 1/4 with a bald head I would probably say go for the small. If your hair sometimes grows out or you sometimes tie your head to ride, go for the medium. As always, ensure the accuracy of your measurement. Take 3 measurements and have someone else do the same. Compare the results.
Does the Bell Helmet decal come off, or is it printed onto the helmet?
A shopper on Jun 28, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Its a decal under the final layer of the finish. You can't get to it unless you really wanted to screw up the clear coat.
I've been reading the reviews and almost everyone mentions the sides being a bit tight at first. I wear glasses and was wondering if that would be a problem with the first few wears.

Thanks.
A shopper on Oct 6, 2011
BEST ANSWER: I wore sunglasses for awhile (Oakley) when the Dark Visors were on back order. It was a little bothersome at first, but the more I rode the more I stopped noticing. My noggin and the helmet adjusted. My best advice would be to try one on locally somewhere if you can. Otherwise you may want to wear contacts or you could just ship the Helmet back. They have an excellent return policy as long as the item is not "ridden".
My head is 23.5 inches, is the XL too big?
A shopper on Apr 30, 2014
BEST ANSWER: my head is 23" bang on - my xl bell is a perfect fit for my rather narrow oval head shape .. most helmet are too round for me , exercising pressure points on my forehead and back of head . It also has a lot of wind noise but comfortable in hot condition ( to compare to 2 hjc i own ) . An other rider with a bell helmet told me he also suffered of sever hair loss after using a bell helmet . i'am 43 .. was it hazard ? ..the face shield going black from clear with uv rays is a great option. Over all it's a great helmet up to 100 mph , seek better quality for higher speeds. Good luck shopping , hope it helps you cause i know i hate shopping those.
I wanted to know does the visor came tinted black or is it clear and when it hits UV light it goes dark black?
A shopper on Apr 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Mine came with a clear visor. If you want the one that changes in sunlight, you will need to order the Transitions shield. I think it runs about $120. IMO, it is worth the money.
Can the Bell Vortex be used in an upright position on a cruiser style bike, or is it more for a sport bike?
A shopper on Oct 6, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The Bell Vortex is more oriented towards a sport use, but can definitely be used on a cruiser or touring bike with an upright position.
Got the XS and it's a little loose. Is there a liner that can be used to decrease the size? Thanks.
A shopper on Apr 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Only thing that comes to mind are those head socks that racers wear. That will snug up the fit but it will be rather warm in the summer months. You would be better off exchanging the helmet for one that fits properly. I had to do this twice until I got the right size. Revzilla was very good with the exchanges. As long as you send it back as received they will exchange without issues.
I currently have a Bell Apex in medium and it fits perfectly. Should I get a medium or a large if my head is 23"? It seems to be at the edge of both sizes.
Conrad L on Mar 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I'll say that go with a large one if you fill like squeezed in or your ears are pushed against your head. The good thing about getting a large for you will be that when you open vents you'll have nice airflow inside the helmet and you won't have sweaty head and hair, also your helmet won't smell stinky... LOL
But also get some expert reviews from revzilla videos and buying guides. Sometimes google has nice explanations and answers...
