Bell Star Speed Freak LE Helmet

Designer Roland Sands has long been a partner with Bell, both in creating amazing artwork and graphics as well as providing the valuable insight that only a top-tier motorcycle racer and bike builder can provide. It’s with these “Renaissance Man” credentials that we turned Roland loose on a new graphic for the full-carbon Bell Star…and deliver he did. The striking gold leaf-over-carbon “Speed Freak” graphic Roland has developed is nothing short of stunning. While it looks good in photos, nothing compares to seeing its detail, depth and complexity in person.

Graphics aside, the Star and Star Carbon continue to deliver bar-setting high-end performance and comfort. Featuring Bell’s Velocity Flow Ventilation with Flow Adjust for amazing ventilation and temperature control, a super stable aerodynamic profile to minimize buffeting and lift, and the easy-to-use 3Mode Click Release Shield, the Star is at the top of its game.

Features:

  • Velocity Flow Ventilation™ system with FlowAdjust™ for maximum ventilation and temperature control
  • Super stable aerodynamic signature resists buffeting and lift
  • Super lightweight 100% carbon fiber shell
  • Contour Cut Cheekpads for superior fit and comfort
  • 3Mode Shield™ for instant on-bike shield adjustments, and ClickRelease™ for the fastest, easiest, tool-free shield swaps ever
  • NutraFog II™ superior anti-fog, anti-scratch and UV protected shield
  • Removable and washable, antibacterial/antimicrobial interior comfort liner
  • Exclusive Magnafusion™ magnetic strap keeper (Patent Pending) – NEW FOR 2010!
  • Padded chin strap with D-ring closure
  • Comes with clear faceshield

This is my second Bell Star helmet and i have to say it is MUCH more comfortable than my 3 year old Star. I was initially considering a Shoei or other brand. The comfort on this is awesome. The carbon fiber and Cerwinske graphics are awesome and distinctive. Noise is not too bad but it is not a exceptionally quiet helmet...but that is due in part to the great airflow. As always Revzilla shipped out to me fast and I knew if I didn't love it I would have no hassles returning it. I love this helmet!

This speed freak is one of a kind. first the fit is dead on but i have to say that its less than a snug fit than the rs-1 but i find that the rs-1 is a bit too tight for long rides. I wear Medium and have intermediate oval head. the inside is so comfortable, if i could give it a 6 on comfort i would off.
but when i received my helmet it had a little crack on the top spoiler, called revzilla support and got a exchange without any hassle. (really good service!). waiting for the new one to get here so i can go tested out. but for now here are some pics

The appearance is awesome on the Matte Carbon Star.
The visor is easy to take on and off, possibly the easiest there is. There is plenty of room behind the ear nets to install speakers for most communication or sound systems. I was surprised that it was a few tenths of an ounce heavier than my X-11, but that's a pretty light helmet. This is the first Bell Helmet I've bought in twenty years. I love it.

Bell has my head shape down - great fit. I rode yesterday in mid to upper 80s temps and never needed to crack the helmet. Air flow was very good. I rode for 3 plus hours in the heat and felt great. I've combined it with the Bell Transitions SolFX Photochromic Face Shield for all around comfort. Pricey but worth it.

The Bell Star helmet exceeded my expectations. High quality helmet.
Compared to my Arai Corsair, the fit is the same. Excellent visibility. Stable at high speeds. Can't believe how easy it is to switch shields. No more worries replacing the Arai side pods :) ; which waiting for the matching part to arrive was more painful than the additional expense. The weight is about the same as Arai, perhaps tad lighter. Excellent ventilation features and easy to adjust while riding.
It is slightly noisier, so a good pair of earplugs are recommended for longer rides.
Ride safe!

Rather then do the usual thing where I just sing the Bell Star's praises in a vacuum, I will compare this helmet to the Bell Vortex which was the last helmet I owned. Hopefully this will illustrate better just what's so great about the Star, at least in terms of a "what am I getting for all this extra cash" manner.
The Bell Vortex (which I got in RSD Apocalypse colors, no longer can be found on the Revzilla site) is a great lid, first of all. It flows truly mad amounts of air for it's price point, is far lighter then the Icon ShaDo2 helmet I moved to it from, and has a very refined feel compared to a lot of helmets in the same price range. Here's what you are MISSING from that helmet, that the Bell Star gives you:
--Even more air flow. WIth all vents wide open at any speed above 20 mph, it feels like your own personal quiet hurricane inside the Bell Star. When you are STATIONARY even the lightest breeze will be channeled up by the hyper-efficient venting and directly applied to your forehead/chin/dome. On hot 75+ degree days here in Florida I don't even bother cracking the visor at some stoplights.
--The Visor Lock system (or whatever it's called). I kind of like this, it's not hard to manipulate at all and would make me feel really secure about the visor staying in place in the event of the worst case if I were burning the sidewalls up on a track. The less-discussed other option is to flip the Lock forward, which actually snaps the visor ever so sliiighhhhttlly open but still keeps it locked in place. This is pretty cool and is the only extra option I sometimes need at longer stoplights (see venting above). I never seem to need to pop the visor all the way open at stops like other helmets would sweat me into doing.
--That leads me to Defogging. Defogging is pretty good on the Bell Vortex, although for whatever reason the stock clear screen would occasionally have trouble at stops. But I never seem to notice any fog, at all, ever in the Star and that's regardless of whether I use the clear visor at night or the gold iridium during the day. The position of the vents doesn't even seem to matter so much.
-- A quieter ride. One of the biggest strikes against the Bell Vortex in my opinion is the constant high-pitched whistling sound at speed. It's not terribly loud so much as right at the exact pitch where it's most annoying. I often rode with earplugs but the Vortex made me do it even more then I did prior. Now, any helmet that flows as much air as either the Vortex or the Star is going to be loud. For that matter, I am not sure that the motorcycle helmet has yet been invented that will ever be "quiet" to any but those who have acquired the taste for deafness in their old age. With that said the Bell Star is definitely a bit quieter. At the very least the noise you receive is noticeably modulated by how many of your vents are open, and regardless it's all at a much lower pitched and natural wind noise. You obviously are still going to hear a whole lot of motorcycle no matter what helmet you wear.
--It is LIGHT. The Bell Star is LIGHT. I once had to chase the Bell Star across the road like a piece of paper in a breeze because it was so LIGHT... that last part is made up. It's still got a slight heft to it, so mini-dirigible experiments using the Bell Star as a hastily-improvised hull are still doomed to failure. But just barely.
--The interior padding of the Star is noticeably plusher (in material) and firmer (in terms of hold on the head) then the Vortex, not that it's BAD in this sense.
--The wind vent tabs have noticeably more "clicky" action on the Star, where the Vortex was just kind of a tab that slid up and down and left me wondering a little bit. The chin vent on the Star also has two definite positions, one which flows air and defogs and another which closes the air vent but keeps the defog air flow. I've never noticed a difference in terms of fog because I honestly never see any.
--Moving on from the last point, no matter what Bell helmet you get (so long as it's not the budget basement Arrow) you will LOVE the forehead vent. That thing dumps air directly onto your brow in a way no other helmet seems able to do.
I got the Rally in the CANDY APPLE RED and white race stripe color, and it's an eye-popping and yet still classy option. It'll go well alongside the White w/ red detailing Triumph Street Triple R I'm upgrading my ride to at the end of this month (GLEE). The red would also go well with a lot of Honda race machines I'm sure.
I skipped over the RS-1 on my trip up the Bell helmet ladder, but I'm very happy with where I am. Rally around the Bell Family, indeed.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Overall this is a pretty great helmet. It looks beautiful and is pretty lightweight. The sizing for the helmet was a little weird. While I'm probably in between a medium and large I had to get the small for a good fit. I tried on the Bell RS-1 while I was trying this helmet and a small in that couldn't even get close to getting on my head. The ventilation is great for keeping your head cool. It is a bit noisy even with the vents closed but I guess that is to be expected at higher speeds. In terms of aerodynamics, this helmet is pretty amazing. You can feel it just cutting through the air and keeping your head stable.
I haven't tried too many different kinds of helmets so I can't really compare this one to others but overall I'm happy with this purchase and think it's worth how much it costs.

Answer:
The Carbon Star is 2.6455 ounces lighter than the RS1.
RS1 spec lists 1575 grams or 55.5564 oz. or 3.4 lbs.
Star Carbon lists 1500 grams or 52.9109 or 3.3 lbs

I own a Star Cerwinske (non carbon) and an RS1 in gloss black, both size large. The non carbon Star is 1600 grams, 25 grams heavier than the RS1 - that's a bit less than an ounce. I can't feel any difference in weight between the two. I don't know if the Star spec weight includes the optional stick-on spoiler piece. I reviewed both helmets in detail here on Revzilla but since I own both, for your convenience, a short summary here of how they differ:

The RS1 is "cushier" and quieter. Designed with a little more "all around" comfort in mind, it has a thicker more cushioned liner and is a bit more aerodynamic in upright riding positions. It ventilates well and due to the plusher padding, seals nicely around the neck, which seals out noise and drafts up the neck. Venting inside the helmet is very good.

The Star has a leaner, firmer liner and superb ventilation and ventilation control, which makes it noisier. Airflow through the helmet is fantastic and air does come up the back of the neck. I purchased the thicker, firm cheek pads for the Star to ensure a snug, wiggle free fit. I didn't need to do that for the RS1.

Overall - I think both helmets are fantastic! Honestly, it was the Cerwinske pattern that got me to buy the Star, but once riding with it, it does offer superior airflow and airflow control and the aerodynamics at speed are excellent.

One additional note - PHOTOCHROMIC SHIELD IS AWESOME! If you ride day to night often - I commute and do - its worth every penny. Good luck. Email with questions if you want to know more.

So as stated in the videos, the bell star is not as snug as the rs1, which i believe is considered race fit. So, so would getting larger cheek pads make the Star race fit? Or is there no fix to this? Or perhaps getting a size smaller??

You should not get a size smaller as it would not fit your head. According to Bell the size is measured at the person temples. If you chose a size smaller your head will not fit.
I want to buy also larger cheek pads for my Bell Star RSD (55mm firm), the problem is to find these for this helmet. It is difficult to find the cheek pads because there are several colors, Bell does not help with the information and I was told by many vendors that Bell has mislabeled the cheek pads recently...

What I will do is probably change the foam in the cheek pads for a firmer one myself...

This is an excellent helmet and I am extremely happy with it (as much that I will buy another one).

Answer:
My response to the weight question touches on this issue. I did purchase the thicker cheek pads for the Star. I also tried on the size M and though I might have managed to wear the smaller size my eye location in the opening was a bit higher than optimal and the shell and protection did not come down far enough on my forehead. I would recommend trying the smaller size if you're borderline between sizes. In may case the fit of the large was perfect on the crown of my head so the best option was to use the larger cheek pads. Overall, a stellar helmet!

Answer:
I don't work for RevZilla but I'm pretty sure that all helmets are required by law to ship with a clear face shield and that tinted shields are not included. I've never bought a helmet that came with a tinted shield, nor one where the tinted could be swapped for the clear on the original purchase. Always had to buy the tinted shield.

FYI - I bought the Photochromatic shield for my two bell helmets (Star and RS1) and It's worth every penny.

Just wondering what head shape this helmet fits. I'm looking for a replacement for my Shark RSR2 (Medium) and was interested in the Bell Star 2010 (carbon). I've tried my friend's 2009 model and in medium it's WAYYyyyy too loose. I was told the 2010 fitting has been corrected... just need info on the head fit (hopefully it'll be as tight as my RSR2).

Answer:
I followed the fit guide provided and result was a correct fit. I found the fit to be medium oval and a tad looser than my Bell RS1, but a change in cheek pads resulted in a perfect fit. I'd say follow the measurement guide and if the fit isn't as snug as you'd like front to back, call Revzilla and swap for the next smaller size. If front to back is good but you'd like it snugger across the cheeks (my situation), order the 50MM firm cheek pads. RevZilla is awesome with questions on fitting and easy about returns to get you a perfect fit so if it isn't right just give them a ring and they'll handle it.

Answer:
The Helmet has a medium oval head shape. Part of the problems with these helmets, Bell as a whole, is that the cheek pads compress so much that when you buy it as a medium new, the pads compress and make it fit like a large. However, the helmets are so nice and reasonably priced its orth it to buy bigger cheek pads when yours get too compressed. Throwing them in the washer and dryer seems to bring them back to life somewhat too.

How does this helmet fit? I have a rather large head, and I usually have to go with a Arai Quantum 2 or a RX-7 Corsair or else I get hot spots on the top of my head, leading to massive headaches (for example, all the HJC helmets give me this problem).

Answer:
Frankly, I can't imagine getting a hot spot on the top of this helmet. The airflow is massive, including awesome flow through the two top vents. Worth noting - as good as the airflow is - and it really is stupendous - the flow control is also great - and when you close the vents, it isn't leaky. Top marks for flow and air management.

Answer:
The "clear coat" is factory applied by Bell in the manufacturing process. The design is not actually sharpied onto each helmet. It is a decal designed by Cerwinske for Bell.

I am wanting something that allows alot of air. I am riding a cruiser and looking for an option to ride to work. I've looked at the touring section but I've notice that you placed this as a better airflow than those in the touring. Or am I missing something vital. Yes I am a nube to full face. Rode alot of half helmets but I am getting older (and slower) just wanting alittle more protection. Thanks!

Answer:
The Bell Star is not 'labeled' a touring style helmet and is typically worn in a more aggressive riding position, however, the brow vents will offer a lot of air flow in any riding position. There are a lot of upright positioned riders taking advantage of the Bell Stars Vented design.
