Bell Star Speed Freak LE Helmet

Designer Roland Sands has long been a partner with Bell, both in creating amazing artwork and graphics as well as providing the valuable insight that only a top-tier motorcycle racer and bike builder can provide. Fantastic Helmet I already own two really nice helmets (Icon variant, suomy spec 1r) and in terms of construction and features the Bell Star is on a whole other level. The helmet does fit a little large compared to my other 2 helmets. I wear a XL in most brands but this one seems to be a little big. I've already ordered the replacement Cheek pads. The Cerwinski graphic to 10 times better once you see it in person. The glossy exposed carbon with the white graphic looks like no other helmet out there. Did I mention this thing is LIGHT? Feels like I have a pedal bike helmet on. Barely even feel it after a little while. If you have the cash and are looking for a premium race helmet. Buy a Bell Star. January 14, 2013
Bell Star Rally The helmet is considerably better than the old HJC helmet that I wore. The helmet is fairly light and the aerodynamics are quite good, which kept my neck from being too sore the next day after a couple of hours on the freeway. Definitely recommend this helmet, especially for the price point at which I bought it at. December 25, 2012
Awesome top notch helmet I have yet to wear it on the bike. But for the price I paid this helmet is unbeatable. Got it on clearance for $300. Super comfortable and light. Very comparable to any other $500+ helmet. December 24, 2012
Bell Star Carbon Helmet This helmet has good air flow, great features, graphics on this model (CERWINSKE) are awesome! Got it on sale for 50% off. Very happy with my purchase from REVZILLA, I'm never disappointed, Thanks. December 11, 2012
Arai to Bell Went to the effort of ordering the Bell Star Matte Carbon Helmet from Revzilla, to be sent to New Zealand as the distributor doesn't bring them into the country. Going from an Arai Quantum to the Bell Star Carbon, I've found the Bell to be outstanding. Admittedly the Arai has aged, but the quality of finish both the lining and carbon shell is excellent. Its alot quieter wind noise wise than the Arai, with excellent visibility. One reason I was drawn to the Bell Star was the carbon construction, and inherent 'light-weight'. Riding a non-faired bike, a light weight helmet goes along way to reducing wind fatigue. Also very stable when turning your head, cuts through the wind like butter providing little resistance. All in all, a highly recommended helmet. I went the extra and purchased the transition visor, and want for nothing else. Cheers Revzilla!! December 3, 2012
Best Helmet I Have Worn This is by far the most comfortable and best quality helmet I have ever owned. It took me a while to pick a helmet and based on reviews I picked the Star Carbon Speed Freak LE. It is great right out of the box you know that you have just moved to the elite level of street helmets. Everything is built with quality and functions smoothly. As always you get what you pay for when you want something that is quality. I would suggest to anyone who rides often like myself. Bell has defiantly gotten my business, and I am looking at getting my wife one too! November 29, 2012
Comfortable, stable and looks awesome My other helmet is the Arai RXQ (large). The Bell Star (medium) is equal to or better in the following ways: -Looks much better -As comfortable -Shield is much easier to remove (though I don't see myself removing it nearly as much with the Transition shield) -Shield mech is much better with indents -Shield lock is much better with 3 position lever vs Arai's silly black lock thingy -Flows as well -Much more stable/better aero Is inferior in the following ways: -Much noisier. I now wear earplugs. -Fit and finish ever so slightly inferior -Shield fogs quicker. Only noticeable when I'm stopped. November 26, 2012
awsome lid this is an outstanding helmet and my fav by far. it is a bit loud with wind noise but it does flow a ton of air and fits very well , confort level is up there with the best on the market and the quality of construction is amazing. i purchased the roland sands le and pics and video dont do it justice it is an amzing helmet you wont be dissapointed. I've only been able to try on a small star and it had some movement to it when I shook my head, it felt almost a size too large. however, I wear a small vortex, and the rs-1 Small when I tried it on small was a good fit
this gives me the impression that xs in the star would be too small. unfortunately I haven't been able to try the xs on for fit.

I'm wondering if transferring the top padding from the XS star to the S would make it slightly tighter but not as much as the XS. without being in store to see them though i can't just pull the lining out to compare. I know they transfer between helmets, but I don't know if it's the same size pad. I realize cheeks can go bigger but I don't think that's enough, not safely anyways. thanks

Answer:
Generally, we find the Bell Star to fit on the big side and has an intermediate oval shape. Bell sizing is not extraordinarily consistent between models and many Star owners end up sizing down from what they would normally wear in an RS-1 or Vortex. One of the TeamZilla staff members owns a Star Rally and had to size down as well. Please feel free to contact us directly with more specific sizing questions: 877-792-9455 or cs@revzilla.com.

some helmets are fine with stickers and some are not depending on the shell material. I was wondering if I would be able to stick a small union jack over the "bell" logo because here in England, "bell" is slang for the end of the male genitalia

Answer:
You are correct, adding any type of adhesive to the outer shell of the helmet can affect its structural integrity.

Therefore, if you want your Bell to remain hard and protective, we would not recommend putting anything sticky on it.

Answer:
The Carbon Star is 2.6455 ounces lighter than the RS1.
RS1 spec lists 1575 grams or 55.5564 oz. or 3.4 lbs.
Star Carbon lists 1500 grams or 52.9109 or 3.3 lbs

I own a Star Cerwinske (non carbon) and an RS1 in gloss black, both size large. The non carbon Star is 1600 grams, 25 grams heavier than the RS1 - that's a bit less than an ounce. I can't feel any difference in weight between the two. I don't know if the Star spec weight includes the optional stick-on spoiler piece. I reviewed both helmets in detail here on Revzilla but since I own both, for your convenience, a short summary here of how they differ:

The RS1 is "cushier" and quieter. Designed with a little more "all around" comfort in mind, it has a thicker more cushioned liner and is a bit more aerodynamic in upright riding positions. It ventilates well and due to the plusher padding, seals nicely around the neck, which seals out noise and drafts up the neck. Venting inside the helmet is very good.

The Star has a leaner, firmer liner and superb ventilation and ventilation control, which makes it noisier. Airflow through the helmet is fantastic and air does come up the back of the neck. I purchased the thicker, firm cheek pads for the Star to ensure a snug, wiggle free fit. I didn't need to do that for the RS1.

Overall - I think both helmets are fantastic! Honestly, it was the Cerwinske pattern that got me to buy the Star, but once riding with it, it does offer superior airflow and airflow control and the aerodynamics at speed are excellent.

One additional note - PHOTOCHROMIC SHIELD IS AWESOME! If you ride day to night often - I commute and do - its worth every penny. Good luck. Email with questions if you want to know more.

So as stated in the videos, the bell star is not as snug as the rs1, which i believe is considered race fit. So, so would getting larger cheek pads make the Star race fit? Or is there no fix to this? Or perhaps getting a size smaller??

Answer:
You should not get a size smaller as it would not fit your head. According to Bell the size is measured at the person temples. If you chose a size smaller your head will not fit.
I want to buy also larger cheek pads for my Bell Star RSD (55mm firm), the problem is to find these for this helmet. It is difficult to find the cheek pads because there are several colors, Bell does not help with the information and I was told by many vendors that Bell has mislabeled the cheek pads recently...

What I will do is probably change the foam in the cheek pads for a firmer one myself...

This is an excellent helmet and I am extremely happy with it (as much that I will buy another one).

Answer:
My response to the weight question touches on this issue. I did purchase the thicker cheek pads for the Star. I also tried on the size M and though I might have managed to wear the smaller size my eye location in the opening was a bit higher than optimal and the shell and protection did not come down far enough on my forehead. I would recommend trying the smaller size if you're borderline between sizes. In may case the fit of the large was perfect on the crown of my head so the best option was to use the larger cheek pads. Overall, a stellar helmet!

Answer:
I don't work for RevZilla but I'm pretty sure that all helmets are required by law to ship with a clear face shield and that tinted shields are not included. I've never bought a helmet that came with a tinted shield, nor one where the tinted could be swapped for the clear on the original purchase. Always had to buy the tinted shield.

FYI - I bought the Photochromatic shield for my two bell helmets (Star and RS1) and It's worth every penny.
