Bell RS-1 Panic Zone Helmet

The all-new Bell RS-1 Helmets bridge the gap between the Vortex and the top-of-the-line Bell Star. The Bell RS-1 Panic Zone Helmet features all the technicality of the RS-1 combined with awesome graphics that are reminiscent of a bandanna. Scattered paisley designs floating under a skull graphic make this lid one cool faux bandanna. Borrowing functionality like Bell’s vaunted Velocity Flow Ventilation system from the Star, this is a solid helmet for the aggressive sport rider who needs some Pro functionality for track days. This is a great helmet at a great price.

Features:

  • Snell M2010 Certification
  • Velocity Flow Ventilation
  • Super Stable Aerodynamic Signature
  • 3Mode Shield - Lock, Ratchet, Crack
  • ClickRelease Shield Mechanism
  • NutraFog II Anti Fog Coating
  • Kevlar/Fiberglass Shell
  • Contour Cut Cheekpads
  • Removable/Washable Liner
  • Agion (R) Antibacterial Liner
  • MagnaFusion Strap Keeper
  • Comes with clear faceshield
  • Five-year Warranty

I was very excited when I ordered this helmet and tried to convince myself to like it, but just couldn't do it. I had trouble with noise, the turbulence, an incredibly annoying whistle with the visor down, and strange ticking noise by my right ear.
When I was riding home from a friend's house and realized I just wanted to get home and get this helmet off of my head, I knew it was time to return it.

I have been shopping for the perfect helmet for a while. I had a very specific list of features that I wanted covered. I am a new rider, and I am very concerned about safety, so I wanted more than just a DOT approved helmet. The Snell M2010 Certification works for me! Also, as a female rider, I didn't want something that was too masculine, but I didn't want butterflies and pink glitter either (there's more pink junk for women riders than any other sport!!! but I digress...) so the Steampunk design is absolutely the coolest thing since sliced bread in my opinion. The helmet fits beautifully, suede-like interior, the pads conformed to my face after one short ride, and it is light enough to not give me a neck ache. The included clear shield is so clear that I had to check to see if I put it down. The airflow is awesome. Even though there are not ports on the sides for eyeglasses, there is still plenty of room for us 4-eyes. :) Oh and the magnetic catch on the strap is sweet. All in all this is the best helmet that I have tried on/used... and I wasn't looking at cheap helmets either, I mean really... how much is your head worth?

By itself, I would put this helmet on par with the RF-1100 and similar helmets, but the available photochromic visor puts this helmet in a class of its own.
Comparing to my old Exo 400, the Bell is quieter, more comfortable, the padding seems higher quality.

I purchase the RS-1 after I could not take the Vortex wind noise any longer. The RS-1 is much quieter. The fit is perfect. I'm a medium in the Vortex and Arai Vector II. Love the transition shield I had on the Vortex and it swaps easy onto RS-1. Some issues: first helmet arrived and the padding that is glued to the right side of helmet was unglued. Revzilla swapped it with ease. Second one is kinda loose as well but not too bad. The plastic lock on shield is cheap and does not function as expected. I hear the Bell Star lock is metal and better quality. If you are looking for a budget helmet and trying to decide between the Vortex and RS-1 definetly go with the RS-1. It is by no means the quality of the Suomy Bostrom Replica I owned. But it is half the price. On a side note, I had to send my Vortex to Bell for warranty repair. They provided a shipping label and sent me a new helmet within a week. Hope to have this kind of service when the plastic shield lock breaks.

Awesome helmet.... Very light, great aerodynamics, great visibility, perfect true to size fit. It does fit a little snug but that was to be expected... So far the best helment I have owned..

I love this helmet, especially the comfort and the design. The only thing, is that I can wear a medium with any other helmet and it fits perfect, but this one is a little big, doesn't fit as snug as I would like. So I went to a motorsports shop near my house and saw the plain black RS-1 in small, tried that on and it was too small. So maybe its just my head but medium is slightly too big and small is too small. I recommend to try it on before purchasing. Also, the airflow isn't the greatest, when I open all the vents I still don't get too much airflow. Other than that, the helmet feels great and looks great! It is on the pricey side, though. Only reason why I gave a 4/5 on the bang for your buck portion.

The bell RS-1 is a very nice helmet, the price is perfect. I didn't want to spend 700 on a helmet and 180 seemed to cheep. The style of the helmet is pretty futuristic, and is very comfortable!

Answer:
I would not recommend washing the helmet liner in any washing machine. I would recommend washing the liner by hand in a sink using a mild detergent like dish soap or Woolite. I have done this myself for several helmets I have had. The liner takes little time to wash and best if air dried.

Answer:
The standard clear faceshield comes with this lid. The photochromic model shown in some of the photos, comparable to Transitions sunglasses, is another $95. The combination is still a better price than comparable hats from Arai or Shoei, and you don't get that visual jitter that can happen with more than one visor (even sunglasses and a visor) in front of your eyes while astride a vibrating machine. If you went with another Bell full-face helmet in the future, you can still use the same light-sensitive face shield . . . Name me another brand that will accommodate that!

You have to buy the tinted or mirrored kind if you wish. I bought the light gold iridium and looks really good. Light enough to wear at night.

I was wondering about the noise in these two helmets. I fell in love with the fit of the Bell RS-1 but a salesman at another store told me that Bell helmets tend to be noisy. I was wondering what you thought.

Answer:
The Bell RS-1 is reportedly better than average when it comes to noise control. Bell has a wide range of helmets, and while some of their more economical styles can tend to be noisy, the RS-1 is a very high quality helmet and does a good job blocking excess noise.

Answer:
I have an RS-1, a top of the line Shoei and a Bell Star - Noise also has a lot to do with fit and seal so for me:

Most comfortable - RS 1
Quietest - RS 1
Best Looking - Bell Star Cerwinske :) (My RS1 is a conservative gloss black -what was I thinking!)
Best aerodynamics - Shoei (no appreciable difference until 130 MPH and up - so for general purpose, they're all great through the wind.)

As to noise, the RS1 has more padding than the Shoei and the Star and a tighter seal around the neck so for me it's a bit quieter. I'm an L in all three and the RS1 is the snuggest fit. They're all comfy, they're all good through the wind.

Star has by far the best ventilation, though the RS1 and Shoei do vent well.

Big BIG plus of the Bell brand is you can get the photochromatic shield - The transitions shield is worth EVERY PENNY!!! The thought of switching from Bell to another brand is now almost impossible until they offer a transitions shield. If you don't do day to night commuting etc. then might not be a big deal but if you want crystal clear in all light conditions with ZERO effort... Like I said - I never want to ride without it.

Want to buy Bell RS-1. My head at widest points: circumference = 60cm. Over the top, between the ears (laughter) = 27 cm. Front to back = 32 cm. My old RF800 XL was probably too big when purchased, now, way too loose. Free G-MAX medium fits very well. According to Bell chart, my head size borders on L/XL. Revzilla video on Bell helmets suggests going down one size from suggested size. So, probably, I have a medium-large head; it's shape, however, eludes me. Advice? Other matter: one of your customers (happy) reports easily breakable face shield lock lever. Other site reviews report same. Are these aberrant reports? Thanks for reading this!!

Looking to replace my X11 this year. Does the RS1 fit like the X11? Keep in mind the RF1100 and Quest fit rounder heads than the X11 does. Will the RS1 work in an upright position like on my R1200RT? My X11 works just fine on my R1200RT when I put the windscreen down. I just am uncomfortable with the idea the vortex will be heavy and will catch the wind when I turn my head. Is this heavy like a Scorpion helmet or lighter more like the X11? Thanks

Answer:
The RS-1 is best compared with the Shoei RF-1100 in fit and function. It has an intermediate oval headshape and is lighter than the Vortex, but not as light as the Bell Star. It should accommodate you fine in an upright riding position.

Answer:
I've worn both, and though cannot say I've ridden with the X11, it seems to be just as light a helmet. Your RT has the same riding position as my Triumph Trophy though, and I have no problems with this RS-1. In fact, it really seems to slice nicely through the wind no matter how my head is oriented. A choice I would recommend. . . . Good luck.

Answer:
I replaced my Scorpion EXO-700 with the Bell RS-1. To me, the RS-1 feels MUCH lighter than my old EXO-700 (a helmet I really liked). I have a medium oval head and the RS-1 fits me perfectly. Haven't tried a Bell Star but the Vortex seemed to feel more "neutral shaped" to me and the RS-1 feels like it favors the "oval shaped" heads. (or at least it favors mine). I ride sport, sport-tour, and a naked road-bike. I have experienced little, if any, buffeting no matter what bike I've been riding. Even freeway speed "head-checks" with no windscreen were no problem whatsoever. This helmet seems to slice right through the air.

Does the RS-1 have different shell sizes? I wear a size small and while I love my bell vortex, it looks giant on me. I had my eye on the bell STAR 2010 as it has 5 different shell sizes so small doesn't look as awkward, does the RS-1 also follow this? or are small headed people still forced to wear XXL helmets and look like bauble heads?

Answer:
According to Bell, this helmet weighs 1,575 grams (about 3.5 lbs). I believe this is an average of the sizes, so the larger ones will be slightly more and the smaller sizes slightly less.
