Bell RS-1 Panic Zone Helmet

great helmet This was a step up from my AGV K3, which I wore for years. This helmet is so comfortable I could take a nap in it. The airflow is the best I've ever seen on a full face helmet, but it's still a full face helmet. April 7, 2014
Fantastic mid-range helmet I haven't worn a Bell Star to compare the higher end but the mid-level RS-1 definitely has fit, quality and features that make it feel very worth the difference from an entry-level helmet. The visor quick-change mechanism works great yet doesn't feel fragile as it does with some other manufacturers. I really like the visor "crack" option for additional venting and the 3 different individually controlled sets of vents work fantastically. Wind noise is significantly lower than my last helmet from HJC. Fit is exactly as it lists in the review video; slightly more aggressive than an entry-level helmet but the fit is great at a bit of a aggressive rounded oval. Shoe helmets always felt tight in the wrong places to me and developed pressure points over time. No such feeling with this at all. I have done half day rides so far and have no discomfort at all from weight, wind noise or fit. You get what you pay for! March 24, 2014
Great helmet and looks mean. I have been riding for years. I have had HJC and various Shoei helmets. They have plenty of miles on them and it was definitely time to replace them. Needed a new angry looking helmet to go with the new VMAX. My style of riding is aggressive. Folks love the style of the helmet. Fits a bit large, so instead of a large I exchanged down to a medium. Wind noise is average and the helmet is much lighter than my older helmets. Should be great on longer rides. Function well at high speeds. Shiny black finish does finger print up very easily. Most definitely add the Photochromatic shield. Works as advertised. Great helmet. Would get a 5, but could be a hair quieter. March 18, 2014
Oh ho yes Way back in August I bought my self the Bell RS-1. After noticing how much riding I actually do I decided that it would make for a good investment. Before i bought the helmet i was of the thinking that no one would ever need to pay more for a helmet… well lets just say i was wrong. So let's start at the top. Bang for the buck: Well this helmet is more then two times more expensive then my AGV K3 and my first impressions are that it’s worth every penny more in price. Once you actually get a chance to spend time with one of these higher quality helmets the little details really start to add up quickly. Things like the liner, visor tension points and improved ventilation make upgrading to the helmet one of those points where theres just no going back. It’s only up from here :-) Style: In my past posts I would consider my self a sport style rider so I personally love aggressive but restrained design. Studying art in college has prepared me to navigate a world of design and unfortunately most sport motorcycle design is crazy and over the top. Not Bell though with the RS-1 they totally nailed this. The helmets profile from nearly every angle drips with subtle aggression. The position of the air vents, spoiler and it’s overall wind swept design is one that (much like the beautifully designed Ferrari F40) will hold its age for years. Oh and in matte black there’s no contest. ;-) Comfort: I have an intermediate oval head so fit tends to be a little more straight forward. The physical fit is excellent with no annoying pressure points. The liner really comes into its own here. Unlike my old helmet witch could start to feel itchy and annoying after a long ride this helmet feels so good on my face. During a long ride I tend to (hand on heart) totally forget I’m wearing it. Protection & Durability: This helmet has a tri-weave shell and is DOT and Snell 2010 rated so it’s crazy safe. The helmet has held up quite well over the past six months. I've put over 3,000 miles on it and it still looks and feels great. Unfortunately there is one side effect of buying a matte finished helmet and that is they scratch like theres no tomorrow. The thing fell off my bed and hit the radiator on the way down putting a nice scoff on the side. :-( Thankfully i was able to cover it with a well placed one inch “remember 9/11” sticker :-D. Air Flow: Personally I'd like a little more air flow but wile riding this helmet totally delivers on that. It’s not just the amount of air that this thing flows it’s the way it flows it. In comparison to my K3 witch would vent air directly into my mouth the RS-1 vents it to the side of my cheeks witch feels amazing. The visor has a perfect tension point for venting extra air for the pesky times where you want to do an “air flush”. My favorite though when it’s really hot are the eye brow vents. When you feel that cool air passing across your forehead it's total bliss. In the north east where it get sticky and gross I give this two sweaty thumbs up :-) Features: The real features of this helmet come in some less obvious places. First theres the locking and crack mechanism on the clutch side witch has been incredibly helpful. My favorite though is the ability to use the Photochromic shield hand on heart it's just awesome. Oh and the magnetic strap is totally fantastic. Another can’t go back feature Fit: I measured my head and came in just under the large. So I stepped up to the large and found it fit's almost perfectly. Next bell though I may go down to the Medium. Noise Level: this helmet was not designed to be quiet and it makes no concessions about that. Weight: This helmet is actually quite light. Like I said at times I totally forget I’ve got it on. Shape: like I said I'm an intermediate oval so perhaps my feedback here is pretty worthless. I left the slider right in the middle. Vision: Compared to my K3 i think the RS-1 has slightly wider vision. Overall experience has been really good. My only gripe is wile in some more sporting positions on the bike I personally found vertical vision to be a little restricted but maybe that has more to do with my hight rather then the helmet. All in all I love the RS-1. Its been pretty much perfect across the board. Its comfortable, safe and cool. But if I’m honest what makes it so good is that you forget its there and that is the best feature of all. Extremely happy with it March 10, 2014
Great Helmet I've had this helmet for a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. It has made me a fan of Bell helmets. The matte black finish is simple yet beautiful. The helmet was a bit tight at the beginning as most helmets are, but it fits like a glove before too long. It's ventilation is as good as they say if not better. Love the magnet strap hold because the plastic clip-ons always break. Thankfully I haven't had a chance to experience it's performance in a crash, but I'm sure the Snell rated rs-1 will do its job if and when the time comes. December 2, 2013
Great helmet! This is a really great helmet. It's incredibly comfortable and I could easily wear it all day. It doesn't weigh a lot and I really don't notice it on my head at all, which I think is something you should want out of a helmet. It's really quiet as well. I do wear earplugs if I'll be going on the highway or anything for an extended period of time, but even without them on it isn't too loud. I did get the transition shield, which is a little expensive but makes this helmet so much better! I really recommend that as well. The air flows really well in this helmet, and it doesn't ever fog up on me. It does fit a little small, but not enough to size down. Once you break it in it shouldn't be a problem. I'd really recommend this helmet. November 11, 2013
Perfect choice Used to use a half helmet w/ ear flaps. I moved to a bigger, faster, dual sport bike and decided to move up to a full helmet. Read a lot of reviews, got some advice from a local motorcycle dealer, bought this one. It is a GREAT helmet. Much better visibility than I expected. Perfect ventilation (I use the slightly cracked feature all the time.) Matte black finish looks great. I could not have made a better choice. October 14, 2013
Good Helmet, Decent Price I was looking to just get a new version of my existing helmet until I found out that the new one is not SNELL approved! So the Great Gear Geek helped me pick out a new helmet that was safe but not too expensive. The Bell RS-1 fit the bill. It is a bit snug, but not tight, but that is good for safety and is already forming to my head and cheeks. I wear glasses and I can put them on fairly easily, so that is a plus. The airflow is very good and it got tested just after I bought the helmet when I rode in rain for about an hour and a half and it did not fog up; I was pleasantly surprised. I just hope I never have to need it's safety features. August 15, 2013

A shopper asked: I was wondering about the noise in these two helmets. I fell in love with the fit of the Bell RS-1 but a salesman at another store told me that Bell helmets tend to be noisy. I was wondering what you thought. Oct 13, 2011

OldYeller: I have an RS-1, a top of the line Shoei and a Bell Star - Noise also has a lot to do with fit and seal so for me:

Most comfortable - RS 1
Quietest - RS 1
Best Looking - Bell Star Cerwinske :) (My RS1 is a conservative gloss black -what was I thinking!)
Best aerodynamics - Shoei (no appreciable difference until 130 MPH and up - so for general purpose, they're all great through the wind.)

As to noise, the RS1 has more padding than the Shoei and the Star and a tighter seal around the neck so for me it's a bit quieter. I'm an L in all three and the RS1 is the snuggest fit. They're all comfy, they're all good through the wind.

Star has by far the best ventilation, though the RS1 and Shoei do vent well.

Big BIG plus of the Bell brand is you can get the photochromatic shield - The transitions shield is worth EVERY PENNY!!! The thought of switching from Bell to another brand is now almost impossible until they offer a transitions shield. If you don't do day to night commuting etc. then might not be a big deal but if you want crystal clear in all light conditions with ZERO effort... Like I said - I never want to ride without it.

AliB: The Bell RS-1 is reportedly better than average when it comes to noise control. Bell has a wide range of helmets, and while some of their more economical styles can tend to be noisy, the RS-1 is a very high quality helmet and does a good job blocking excess noise. Oct 13, 2011
