Arai XD-4 Flare Helmet

The Arai XD4 is world renowned for being the one of the best ADV touring helmets on the market and one of the few that achieves a Snell safety rating. The XD4 incorporates all of the same great qualities found in Arai's other helmets including the comfort liner and cheek pads that feature 5mm peel-away pads that allow riders to tailor the fit. The shell of the XD4 has also been aerodynamically tuned and, in concert with the removable floating peak visor, funnels air into the redesigned vents, improving overall ventilation and mitigating buffeting at speed.

The XD-4 is the helmet of choice for many hardcore ADV enthusiasts and sets an industry standard for comfort, quality and safety.

Features:

  • Comfort headliner, with micro fitting 5mm peel away temple pads
  • Fully removable/replaceable/washable interior
  • Dry-Cool technology keeps you dry and cool for greater comfort
  • FCS (Facial Contour Support) cheek pad design, also with a 5mm peel away micro fit feature
  • Improved shell shape for better aerodynamic stability at higher street speeds
  • Exhaust ports added to the top diffuser vents
  • Chin vent with more intake ports
  • Larger sculpted side cowl vents improve ventilation
  • Snell M2015 approved

Worked as expected
It bought this product to use with my 2015 GSA. It fit me a little tight around the temples but I removed the 5mm extra foam referred to in the product doc and it resolved the issue. This feature was the main reason I decided on this helmet. I am a little disappointed on the noise level. I have a Schubert C3 and it is quiet on the GSA compared to this Arai XD-4. At highway speeds I use ear plugs and it does resolve the noise issues, However the XD-4 is better ventilated and has better overall view of the road. The shield stays put wherever it is put at any legal speed. I wear glasses and it is a pain getting my thin flexible clear prescription glasses on, however my prescription sunglasses go on easily. The fit and finish and graphics are first class as you would expect in such a pricey helmet. The sales literature here seems to indicate that this helmet is Snell 2010 however the Snell inside the helmet label says M2015.

Fit and Finish as expected from Arai
This is my 4th Arai. And every one of them are excellent helmets. They are very expensive, and I know that other brands are quiet good if not excellent themselves, but the fit and finish of the Arai brand is always exceptional. This is my first ADV style helmet and I am most impressed by the vision. I have a lot more up and down vision over a standard full face helmet. As for the Floating Peek Visor, it is barley any different than a non-peek helmet. A little buffeting at speeds that are not posted... :) As expected.

Not as revolutionary as I was expecting
Let me first start by saying this helmet is great and it definitely feels like a lot of thought and engineering went into it. With that said the title says my feelings about this helmet, it wasn't like the jump from my first budget scorpion helmet back in the day to a "premium," Icon helmet rather it felt like just like another helmet that just worked. It was comfy right out the box and has hands down the best field of view out of any of my many helmets but thats petty much about it. Nothing about this helmet screams unique and special rather just get this with the expectation of getting a great looking and functional helmet that will protect you in a crash... if that doesn't get you I wouldn't recommend you spend as much as this helmet costs.... Honestly, I dont feel any safer in this helmet than I did in my Icon or even modern scorpion helmets. I am not a big fan of how the speakers sit in the helmet, they are very quiet and from what I gathered it because of how thick the cheekpads are. I definitely prefer my Variant speaker set up but you get used to it and deal .The anti fog system is an anomaly, fog will show up on the visor but it always quickly disappears so I guess its anti-fog.

Very comfortable. Good design.
I haven't put in a full day ride yet because we are still somewhat snowbound but the snow is melting quickly and I cannot wait to go riding. This is my first street adventure helmet but the fit and comfort are excellent. I normally wear a medium but the small is a much better fit in this model. The Revzilla team was excellent as always. If I need something I check Revzilla first to see if they have it. I will buy from Revzilla if they have it rather than shop for a better price. Revzilla prices are usually the same or close but their service and ease of doing business can't be beat so I just prefer to do business with them.

Loving it!
I took a chance on Arai with this purchase, having heard very good reviews on the quality and fit/shape. I haven't spent overly long periods of time in it yet, but the 1-1.5 hour stints have so far not given me any hot spots. It's surprisingly quiet for a dual sport helmet! Fit is snug around my head without pinching my cheeks too much. My Shoei fits my head well, but pinches my face enough to make my ears ache after a while (weird, I know). No such trouble with this Arai. Feels good, looks good...winner!

Excellent helmet
This is my second XD4. Great style, very comfortable. My only complain is that it fogs easily and need to keep opened a bit, specially at low speeds. Otherwise a perfect choice.
Plus I really like the new sand flare design which matches my bike colours

Excellent helmet for adventure riding
I've used Arai helmets for about 15 years. My other versions were full always Quantum series or the VX series. This is the first adventure styled helmet.

I was so tired of coming home later in the day with the sun in my eyes. The visor on this helmet solves that nicely with a slight head tilt. My worry was that the visor would tug annoyingly at speed or be too loud.

My 1200GSA has a larger windshield than stock and sitting behind it the noise level is just fine. On my KTM when dual sporting, the helmet is very loud however. I don't travel long distances on the pavement with the KTM, so it is not a big deal. But I would not have this helmet on a street bike without a windshield.

On the GSA, the visor doesn't tug at speeds up to 100. Even in cross winds, the effect is not bad enough to notice. In short, its a non-issue. On the KTM, yes it tugs a bit, especially when checking over your shoulder, but not any worse than a dirt bike helmet. On the dirt bike, again a non-issue.

The helmet is very comfortable as is the norm with Arai. My Sena Bluetooth attached easily. Speakers fit inside without rubbing against my ears.

The shield on my old Arai's never had good detents to keep the shield up while riding. This helmet has nice detents that hold the shield up without constantly having to push it up again.

Some have said the shield distorts the vision. I don't see it. Looks fine to me, with and without polarized sunglasses.

Venting is good, even off-road. No complaints on airflow.

Paint job is great. A matte finish which I wasn't expecting, but looks sharp.

Quite expensive and took a while to justify the purchase. But now that I own it, it feels worth it every time I ride.

Finally Did It
Have wanted to try one for years, but price and fit were concerns. Still think it's too costly....is it really 400% better than a $150 lid? don't think so. Is it better....definitely yes in quality, materials, and engineering. What surprised me most was the great it fit. I always thought of myself as a 'rounder' head Shoei type but I followed the sizing recommendation and am quite happy with the fit. I haven't had it long enough to rate it's durability, but their rep indicates it's top-notch. Wish Arai could find a way to incorporate a sun shield w/o compromising their safety concerns but hey, I look kewl in sunglasses. Love the new Flare design too.

I definitely recommend this product.
I have had Arai full faced helmets in the past, and this one feels and presents just as well, if not better. The larger lens allows for better visibility. I installed the intercom from the previous Arai (Quantum J) and it fits much better. Definitely a great looking, safe product that got a lot of attention from the other riders.

I ordered one in the blue and white color way to match my new BMW R 1200 RS . I have an older XD-4 in plain silver color way and it was time to upgrade anyway and wanted something with a little more eye catching look. I am over the stealth look now and have decided more visible the better.

Have a 9 year old XD which has served well but time to retire it. Arai XD is a perfect fit for my head and beautiful quality. Arai is the only helmet line, street and dual sport, that I trust with caring for my melon.

This is my second XD4. The first one suffered a couple of encounters with the floor while my head was inside and I felt the need to replace it.
Very comfortable and on the light side, the only problem is that the shield fogs easily wich forces to open it a bit.

Like this helmet in the sand colour but I'm wondering if the helmet will accommodate communication devices, rider to rider, rider to pillion, bluetooth etc? If not could you recommend a dual sport helmet that does.

BEST ANSWER: I have this helmet and use a Sena 20s intercom/bluetooth sound system.
Does anyone have experience using polarized sunglasses with the visor? Does it cause any visual disturbances?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I wear polarized prescription sunglasses every day with my XD-4. No distortion or internal reflections. This is my second XD and without a doubt, it is the highest quality, best designed helmet I have had.
How quiet is the XD-4? I have a Hornet DS and a Shoei-GT Air.. the DS is really quiet loud and I'm after something that is as quiet as possible. The benchmark of quiet for me is the GT Air.

Thanks
A shopper on Oct 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: My XD-4 is pretty quiet for a dirt style helmet. When I initially wore the helmet there was some low toned noise caused by the visor vibrating in the wind when I was traveling above 60 mph. I placed some stick on tire weights to underneath the front of the visor and it stopped the vibration. After that its been fine. I still wear ear plugs when I do any long distance street rides. I ride 50/50 road/dirt roads on my KTM 1190R. Other than that its a great helmet, very comfortable for all day rides.
what would be the difference between the XD4 Vs the Nexx XD1?? I cant decide between these 2 helmets.... please advice me...tks
A C on Oct 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No internal sunglasses on Arai while Nexx has
I have the Shoei Hornet and love the ventilation, fit and wide view. What it lacks is a quick release face-shield and a face shield detention that allows it to be opens slightly for more ventilation at times. Tell me about the new Aria DS on your website?
A shopper on Aug 20, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I rode with an Arai XD-3 for a few years. I needed to replace the helmet after a few off road mishaps. I heard good reviews for the Shoei DS Hornet and gave it a try. It was a big let down coming from the XD-3. The XD-3 ventilation is much cooler. The XD-3 faceshield can be opened slightly to allow for a little ventilation or to unfog the shield. Also, the visor on the Shoei is so high it's never in your field of view and does NOT shield the sun even if you tilt your head forward. I just bought a new XD-4 and so far I'm very happy I did. Yes, it's expensive...but it's the best DS helmet out there. If you can afford it...BUY IT.
