Arai RX-Q DNA Helmet - (Size LG Only) 4.8 5 374 374
Good, but some problems I had two previous Arai helmets, both Quantum II models, and I was very happy with Arai. They quit building the Quantum II so I got this helmet 5yrs ago, and my wife also got one. These are definate downgrade of the Quantum II in both quality and comfort. The interior is not near as plush as the older helmet, I thought I would get used to it. I always had a hot spot on my forehead which I never had with the older helmet. The biggest disappointment though is the vents in the top front of the helmet, they break regularly. Arai offers a 5yr warranty, and they are a nice company to deal with, they sent me new vents every time one broke. It's not like we are 9yr old kids, we are 55yr old and don't flip the vents open and closed more than a few times a month, and they still broke constantly. I finally just taped them shut. I tried my old Quantum II temporarilly while washing the interior of this helmet, and decided to retire this one and use the old one. More reliable and more comfortable. New helmet will come soon, but not another RX-Q. August 4, 2016
Second To None This is the second RX-Q I have owned. I purchased the first one in 2011, and I liked it so much there was no question that I'd replace it with the same model. The primary reasons I buy Arai are comfort and safety. The RX-Q is extremely light and the interior is very plush and comfortable. I sold motorcycle helmets for six years, and I had the opportunity to wear many brands and styles. Very few helmet manufacturers put as much thought into their products as Arai (Schuberth comes to mind). I have seen photos of an Arai after a 140 mph impact; I almost never ride that fast, but it's nice to know my helmet is up to the task. The overall quality of the build is another plus. Every piece fits together with no rattling. In the five years I wore the first helmet, I had one upper intake vent replaced under warranty, and that was handled quickly and professionally by Arai's customer service. I don't know if the RX-Q will still be available when the time comes to replace my helmet, but you can be sure I'll be looking at Arai offerings first. August 3, 2016
Max comfy, great for glasses wearers! I could not find a better helmet that would let me wear my prescription glasses comfortably, it really felt like it was built for me. All the other helmets I've tried on was a mission to get my glasses to slide in, Arai really knows their headshapes and it really felt like they took glasses wearers into consideration when they built the helmet. My glasses doesn't move or vibrate when I'm on the highway. Also remember to wear earplugs, no matter how quiet a helmet is your hearing can still be damaged from pressure! July 28, 2016
Great helmet, crash performance was excellent! Bought this helmet for one reason, crash protection. It performed flawlessly! I slid about 100 feet on concrete pavement and the helmet did exactly what a quality helmet should do. I had no head or neck injuries, even after hitting the curb with my head and shoulder. Yes the price is in the upper range, but how much is your melon worth? I like to be able to feed myself. The pin lock face shield never opened and took a beating as well. This helmet literally saved my life. I'll be replacing this helmet with another! June 13, 2016
Good but not worth the extra money I'll be in the minority of people here in not recommending this helmet. I tried on lots and lots of helmets at local stores and, unfortunately for me, the only one that fit my head and was glasses-friendly was this one. I replaced my very old HJC CL-16 with this one and thought the difference would be dramatic. I was disappointed. Let's start with fit. Fit is great with this helmet for MY head shape. I have a very round head and the RX-Q fits me really well. HOWEVER, my old CL-16 fits my head identically well. This really goes to show that helmet fit is highly dependent on the individual person and a few extra hundred dollars won't necessarily get you a better fit. Where I did find this helmet to be EXCELLENT is in accommodating glasses. Putting on glasses is extremely easy and it was why I ultimately ended up paying the extra money for this helmet. If you don't wear glasses, this should not be a selling point for you. The cheek pads can be adjusted 5mm down in size if needed. That can be handy if you have puffier cheeks. Noise level on this helmet is very high. It is equivalent to my cheap HJC helmet if not slightly louder. I always wear ear plugs, however, so I don't usually care about this when buying a helmet. I will say that it is slightly quieter when you tilt your head down. The reduction in wind noise is only noticeable to me when I AM* wearing ear plugs. Without ear plugs, I CANNOT tell the difference since the helmet is loud regardless of vent configuration. I ride a naked SV650 which has a more upright position. Supersports in a more tucked position might find this helmet to be slightly more quiet. Weight is pretty good but I honestly don't notice the few ounces less in this helmet compared to others I've tried on. I'm sure this is up to the individual's sensitivity to weight on your head but for me it's not a selling point. Vision is fairly wide with adequate peripheral vision. You'll still have to do over-shoulder checks obviously but peripheral vision isn't limited. Ventilation is pretty good but not amazing. With all vents open and rear exhaust vent also open, you can feel just a tiny bit of air regardless of head position, upright or tucked. for a $500 helmet, I expected more. Compared to the cheaper HJC helmet, this is only slightly less warm on a hot day. Inside material of the cheek pads is a huge disappointment like others have mentioned. Putting on and removing the helmet will leave your ears and cheeks hurting from the abrasiveness of the material. I suspect that with more usage and sweat the material will soften up but to have something this abrasive out of the box is very disappointing. Faceshield fogs up VERY easily even on 70F mornings. The front chin/mouth vent doesn't help at all regardless of position. (It has three positions: closed, direct venting, defogging venting; which by the way t he difference isn't noticeable when open or closed). I haven't ordered the pin-lock shield but I do find it necessary. Removing the faceshield is also a pain and a step back in time, though this complaint isn't new to the Arai line of helmets. Considering all the great reviews this helmet has gotten, I feel like I got a dud OR people are trying very hard to convince themselves that the price they paid was worth it for the Arai name. If I had to price this helmet in a "blind" test ride, I would have placed it in the $200 tier. Guys who ride motorcycles with a more tucked position might favor this more than those with an upright bike. The features just aren't there in my opinion and if you're on the fence about spending $500, I would seriously not recommend it. If you have any other questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them. July 27, 2016
First Arai Helmet Lets get my helmet background out of the way to let everyone have a better understanding of my perspective. First helmet I had was a Bell Vortex, it's a cheap entry level helmet with decent features for the price point. Next was a AGV K5, great helmet! But I got the wrong size and it really hurt my ears. Its a big step up from the Vortex. Now the RX-Q, sometimes you do get what you pay for. This helmet takes everything up another level by comfort, noise level, build quality. Cheek pads are snug and feels soft, could be softer though. Inside the cheek pads, you can peel away the liner and fit in SENA 10S speakers. Does not hurt my ears at all, and I have extra large ears for a medium size helmet. Overall it feels very together, the locking mechanism for the shield clicks in nicely and feels secure. I like that tight seal around the shield for air noise and in case of water. Head check at 75mph is smooth, I ride a street triple R, wind is always in my face. You really get what you pay for in terms of quality with this helmet. I got the Retro 75 white and black helmet. Loving the graphics on this one. Only downside I can think of with the RX-Q is the design has been out since 2010. I like to purchase new items that were also recently designed to know I spent my money well. Although its older design by today's standard, it is a great helmet. July 25, 2016
Excellent Helmet This is without a doubt the best helmet I have ever purchased. They said it was a little noisy compared to other equivalent helmets. Compared to the helmets that I have own, this is the quietest helmet I have ever worn. Vision is good, vents work well. I have no fairing and never feel as though my head is being pulled back by the wind, so I would have to say aerodynamics is spot on and weight is very light. July 19, 2016
As expected from Arai Another in a line of several Arai helmets I've used. Great quality, great fit and comfort, very good airflow. My only gripe is that Arai no longer uses the exceptionally soft and plush liner material that was used on my older Quantum and Quantum F helmets. This liner is fine, but would like Arai to upgrade this by the time I'm up for renewal. July 19, 2016
