AltRider Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 Skid Plate

Protect the vital engine cases and oil sump without giving up ground clear with the AltRider skid plate for the Suzuki V-Strom DL1000. Constructed of impact resistant 4.75 mm anodized aluminum, this skid plate provides ideal protection for off road conditions. Your exhaust header pipe is also fully protected without sacrificing ground clearance. The oil cooler is well protected while still allowing optimal air flow.

Made with the rider’s convenience in mind, the skid plate can remain installed during oil changes on the center-stand or side-stand since the relief is cut so oil can be drained while the bike is upright or on the side-stand. Included with the skid plate is a redesigned rear bracket that allows for easier installation and more overall strength. The skid plate matches up perfectly to the V-Strom crash bars using hidden fasteners for a clean, finished look. This product is also available in silver.

The 2012 DL1000 instructions need an update The instructions were a bit generic, but adequate. On my kit the bracket had 3 mounting holes. So there was no play on the initial install. Also, the bolts that hold the skid plate to the bracket were too long on the left side. The bolt actually interferes with the exhaust pipe. I installed 3 washers between the skid plate and the mounting bracket to make it work. While that seems like no big deal... when you spend $300 on a skid plate, everything should fit perfectly. Also, when mounting the front 4 hex head bolts back to the crash bar you can access them with an extension through the lower holes. It's faster and way easier than the install video. Overall its a nicely finished piece, and necessary to help protect the engine. April 28, 2013

Muffler in the way Install sucks a bit due to the location of the kickstand bolts that have to be removed. If you don't have a 19mm open end wrench, go out and buy one before starting the install. It could save you an hour or two in install. Also, the back plate bolt goes directly into the muffler so I have not been able to install that bolt/nut yet to make it fully installed. I'll either need to drill an alternate hole of have the bolt chopped of to fit. This works perfectly with the AltRider crash bars. October 8, 2012

DL1000 AltRider Skid Plate Great skid plate overall but installation can be a chore. First prying out the right muffler mount to put in the skid plate bracket means loosing all muffler mount bolts. Then aligning the holes to get the muffler mount bolt back in is a chore also. If you do not have a AltRider crash bar you will be drilling hole in your crash bar to mount the front of the skid plate. This skid plate seems larger than it needs to be, not hugging the bottom of the engine. You definitively can change the oil filter out without removing the skid plate as long as you have plenty of rag under the oil filter. Overall a good heavy duty skid plate but easy of installation is another thing and much more room between the engine and the skid plate than other brands. August 29, 2011
