Fitment Notes & Exceptions

  • The AltRider Yamaha Super Tenere skid plate will not work with OEM Yamaha crash bars because of interference with crossbar on crash bars. Skid plate will mount up but cross bar will have to be removed.
  • Skid plate must be removed to change oil filter. If using aftermarket oil filter, it must be the same 2" length as OEM to avoid interference. Oil, alone, can be changed with skid plate installed.

Looks good on my bike.
This is a nice skid plate. Looks good and protects the vital areas needed. It is somewhat expensive for what it is though.

PERFECT fit :-)
I bought the ALTRIDER crash bar and the skide plate... I'm very happy with my choice... A little bit more expensive than GIVI or SW-MOTECH products but better built and OF COURSE, more what you went for your BIKE.... PROTECTION :-)

Haven't used it much, but sure glad it's there.
I think this is a must if you're taking a Tenere off pavement. The OEM plastic guard just isn't going to protect the oil filter. I only rated this a 4 on bang for buck because while the bang is really good, it costs a lot of bucks...But less than a cracked pan would cost, I'm thinking.
Fit is excellent, coverage looks very good, and I'm sure this will take a lot of abuse.
I didn't see this info anywhere else, but the plate has two holes for draining oil without having to remove it. Since Tenere wants a new oil filter only every other oil change, I figure I'll probably have to remove this (two screws at each of three corners, and a bolt at the fourth corner) every 8K miles. That shouldn't suck too badly.

Already Paid For Itself!
My review summary may be an overstatement, but in the short time I've owned it, its done its job.

Due to my own fault, I had not yet set-up the suspension on my Super Tenere to my weight and load. I rode up Rollins Pass East and West. I heard lots of rocks bouncing off the plate and a couple times my whole bike moved from hitting something.

After Rollins Pass East I saw a knuckle sized dent on the plate. After the West side, (Corona Pass), I had a "grind" that ran the length of the left side.

Thankfully the skid plate did its job! No damage to my bike!

It takes a beating daily!
I use my Tenere as my commuter bike and I get to take 6-8 miles of offroad. It's a lot like your video "the commute" The loose river rock I ride thru really puts the skid plate to the test! Altrider makes a great product!

Altrider Super Ten skid
This skid is true to Altrider products. Great quality! Great fit and finish! Easy install with basic tools. YouTube video to aid in installation. The only complaint , I am being picky here, is the amount of ground clearance you lose with the addition of the skid. Yes the bike doesn't have great clearance to begin with but the skid takes more than needed. Otherwise this is an awesome product. This skid is for a 2012 Super Tenere.

Bulletproof
When I bought my Tenere, I looked at the front of the engine with the shiny susceptible oil filter positioned directly in the chunk-throwing path of the front wheel. Before even considering the purchase, I hit the AltRider site to see their solution. As I suspected, they came up with something as bulletproof as their R1200GS skid pan. This wraps around the delicate parts but it's mounted close to the machine so you don't lose clearance. The oil filter is protected well and even part of the header too!

Strong and looks great
This thing is a tank. Not only is it the best looking bash plate for the Tenere it is the best. I did a lot of research before i bought this bash plate. it has well thought out mounting points and a very heavy duty bracket that it attaches to underneath the bike. The OEM bash plate is a stinker, it bolts directly to the oil pan. Do a google search and you can find pictures of broken oil pans on teneres that have used the OEM bash plates.

Sounded bomb-proof from the write-up. It is! I've pinged this off a lot of rocks, and it's saved the bike every time.

Skid plate has been great. Can still finagle the Oil Filter out without removing the pan. It does get a bit mess though as the oil will drip down the pan. It's completely protected the bike with my offroad excursions. You constantly hear items bouncing off the bottom. Very nice insurance

The Tenere ain't a GS but I do plan to do some forest roads, some of which may be rough and the Tenere does not have the clearance of some others. Just want to protect it. Oh, rubbish. It looks cool. That's why.

Very well made and fits my bike perfectly. You need some patience to fit the nuts on the inside of the skid plate. Looks great on the bike and should provide great protection for the bike.

Prior to this purchase I had a cheap aluminum skid plate. While doing a little dirt riding I hit a small branch that pushed a mounting bolt from the skid plate into my sump pan and put a hole in it. Altrider is what I should have gone with in the first place instead of taking the cheap route. Lesson learned.

Does the AltRider Skid plate work with Givi Crash bars?
Martin S on Oct 6, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Yes for 2012
Just to be sure....I assume that the entire skid plate must be removed to change oil & filter...nes't ce pas?
A shopper on Aug 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You are correct. The removal added an additional 10 minutes to the total job and was much easier than I would have thought. A great addition to the Super T!
Will a Fenda Exrenda work with the Altrider skidplate? I plan on riding on gravel roads and want to protect the front of the engine from hits. Or would I be better off with a ACD skid plate that covers the whole front of the engine?
Thanks,
Alan
Alan S on Aug 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: My buddy has this exact set-up and the Extenda got hung up on the skid plate and broke while going off-road. It wasn't an issue until we got to a rocky off-road section...
