AltRider Skid Plate Suzuki V-Strom DL650 2004-2016
(2012+) V-strom 650 Beware!
If you own a DL650 beware. You will need a paddock stand to install this. I would not recommend a center stand unless you can lock it in place. It took me 2 hours to loose the two bolts that hold the kick stand two the bike. After going from a 3/8" drive to a 1/2" too a 1/2" breaker bar I couldn't get the bolts to budge. In the end ended up using a hydrolock jack to turn the wrench. I kid you not it lifted the front suspension 4+ inches before the bolts started turning!
This is no knock to the skid plate but just be aware of what your getting into.A 20 min installed turned into 3 hours. The product seems very well made. I like that its American made and to me its worth a little more money. I have learned you get what you pay for. I didn't rate this excellent because I have not have put many miles on it yet.

I have just purchased a second AltRider crash bars and skidplate set for my second Suzuki V-strom. The parts are excellently manufactured and are of very high quality. These parts provide excellent protection and are difficult to damage. My first set was on my V-Strom for over 3.5 years before I totaled it and even though I have taken the bike on many trails and fire roads, there were only a few scratches and a small dent in the skid plate to show for it. The bike was dropped (at a stop of very slow speed) multiple times and the side of the bike has no damage to show for it and the crash bars never bent and have some scratches on them.
The one downside to the AltRider skid plate is that you have to have the AltRider crash bars to mount the skidplate. The upside to this is that it provides a rock solid protection in front of the motor. When my bike was totaled, the engine, triple-tree, and likely the frame were all saved due to the fact that I had the skid plate and crash bars that I did. The wheel was pushed back into them, which stopped the wheel short of the engine, stopped the forks from bending further and damaging the triple-tree (which also possibly would have damaged the frame).

Very nice skidplate.
I was concerned about investing too much into my 10 year old v-strom and thought the Altrider stuff was a little high, right up until I finished the installation. I stepped back, looked it over and decided it was well worth the price.
Solid construction, relatively easy installation, and well integrated to the bike.
Very happy with this product.

Do not buy! This skid plate failed in ~2,000 miles of nothing more than interstate commuting. A few weeks after installing this item I head a buzzing at 5,500 RPM. Upon inspection I found a cracked weld on the skid plate. I removed the skid plate for repair and found the left side mounting tab had cracked all the way across and was no longer attached to the cross member; this structural failure likely led to the cracked weld. For the price, this skid plate should be bulletproof. This occurred in the weeks prior to a recent trip I went on, due to latency in response of customer service I had to come up with my own modifications/repairs. They eventually did respond that I could submit the failed product for replacement however I have more faith in my own repairs and I have hassled enough with this product.... I have pictures too but can't get them to upload, will try to upload later.

crashbars and skidplate
Revzilla got them to me quickly and with free shipping -- I like that.
I bought this particular setup -- 1] because the crashbars are stainlees and because of how they fit to the frame. 2] I wanted a skidplate that did not bolt to the engine and that I did not have to remove to change the oil.
The parts are beautifully made and finished. I am a blacksmith and I appreciate nice metal work, this stuff is Nice. Everything fit up well and bolted together.
Now to pick the fly stuff out of the pepper -- so to speak.
There was no Locktite in either kit. They said there would be. = trip to the hardware store.
If they refer to a bolt size, it is bolt they give you not what is already on the bike.
First step to install the skidplate is to remove the 2 bolts holding the side stand on. Glad my daughter was home to hold the bike. Also, Suzuki uses some sort of Godzilla thread lock on these bolts = deadblow hammer and combination wrench. Holy cow! I didn't think that thing was ever going to come loose.
The rear bolt on the right of the skid plate takes some serious contorting and cussing to get started.
Those are all my whines. All put together it looks great and sturdy. Well thought out by whoever engineered the setup. Install of the crashbars is easy enough for about anyone. The skidplate -- you are going to need some skills. Seems like it all took an hour or so. A lot of which was cussing the side stand bolts out.

The skid plate is great! You need the crash bars to install, which isn't a problem, but the first set of crash bars I received were defective. AltRider and Revzilla were very prompt at getting me a replacement set! I would definitely recommend both the bars and the skid plate and Revzilla!!

Most likely the best skidplate available for the Vstrom
I bought and installed it myself about a month ago. Installation went well and was actually quite easy. I probably should have just rated it a 5 as it couldn't have been much easier considering. Removing and reinstalling the kick stand mounting bolts was the most difficult thing. Mostly because they are long and fine thread so they have to be turned 100 times to get them out and then back in. I didn't have the perfect tools for the job so I had to make do plus I don't have a lift so I was on my back on the garage floor. It still wasn't a big deal. Mounting hardware was a perfect fit as was the place. Quality is first rate and couldn't be better. Mounting bracket for the rear of the plate is stainless steel and hardware is recessed. Front bolts where it attaches to the crash bar were easy to do and I'm 6'2" with large hands so I'm not sure what all the fuss is that I read online in other locations. Again, fit was perfect. Everything lined up well and instructions were good. I would buy it again without hesitation despite the price. It really wasn't that much more expensive than the alternatives when you are getting perfection and a clean integrated connection to the crash bar. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
