My second choice... Truth be told I had bought the Happy Trail skidplate before this one. I thought it would be a decent product at nearly half the price. The issue being that they were nearly six months behind on back orders. I splurged and bought the Alt Rider skid plate for more money but am really impressed with the finish of the item. The aluminum is almost the same weight as the useless plastic that comes with the KLR so there was no increase there. The rubber grommets - while a pain to install - are a nice touch that feels like it would do more to save from major impacts over just a skid plate. The hardware included was very well packaged, the instructions clear. The only way they could have made the installation easier would have been to include a lift for the bike. I'm impressed with the skid plate and look forward to seeing how it holds up in the dirt. I don't suspect it to be lacking. June 9, 2014
Altrider Skid for KLR650 USED WITH Givi Crash Bars The coverage of this skid is excellent however I have to comment about the gauge of metal used. Former examples of their skids such as the product for the R1200GS utilizes material much thicker. I took several rocks with this skid and while there was no damage to the bike, the skid did get bent up a bit. Some would so it did it's job, including me. My point is, it wouldn't get deformed if it was just a little thicker. Great fit and finish though and mounted up well with the Givi crash bars. They collectively saved my bike during a sketchy crash. Every time the skid would ding, I knew it was still there saving my bike. Nice work on this product Altrider! June 2, 2014
Great Skid Plate Looks cool. Beefy and up to the job. A bit hard to install as rubber bumpers have to be compressed for hole fitment. But rubber bumpers important to eliminate vibration. Be careful as I dumped my bike trying to get holes to line up by pushing underside of plate for hole alignment (my fault) with broken fairing. Dohhhhh! Well built and made with precision. Costly compared to other plates. February 15, 2014
AMAZING SKID PLATE I recently purchased the Altrider skid plate for my 2014 KLR650 to replace the cheap useless factory plate. Prior to this purchase i installed the Givi crash bars of which created a tremendous amount of vibration through out the bike at around 45 MPH in conjunction of the existing vibration of the primal motorcycles single cylinder 651cc engine. Once installed the Altrider skid plate with all 8 dampners like magic even the majority of the pre existing vibration prior to installation of the engine guards was gone. I am extremely stunned by this since some KLR owners in the past result into upgraded piston kits to achieve a smoother ride and all i did was install a skid plate. Over all coverage is great it protects the water pump, valve cover, and more then 75% of the oil sump and the hole in the bottom for oil change purposes works flawlessly in the plates functionabilty. great finish and solid yet light weight. I found that for anything that covered more then this plate is in the upward 280-300 dollar range and appeared less attractive to the eye and functionabilty all around on the bike seems questionable. I am really impressed with the out come of this purchase and will highly suggest this to any other KLR enthusiast. November 4, 2013

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Jeremiah S: Priced higher than other similar parts - the instructions were far clearer and published in color with well lit photos. For someone unafraid of wrenching but still leery of jacking up their expensive toy this is a thing I look for. May 23, 2014
Elvin R: made of one solid plate and has rubber bushings to dampen vibration. May 13, 2014
dustin jon o: get the crash bars, get the skid plate too, u hafta take it off before you can add the crash bars! cheers... Oct 13, 2013
Michael S asked: Will this skidplate work with the Givi engine guards for a 2013 KLR 650? Aug 9, 2014

David M: Yep, I've got the givi's on my KLR and they go nowhere near the skid plate.
I actually got this plate as someone else commented here it stopped vibrations from his givi's. I didn't notice any change, but got no extra vibrations as some guys with other skid plates have reported so it's all good.

Robert M: I don't have the engine guards myself but I did read a review somewhere where a person employed both items and was pleased with the results.
Hope this helps. Robert M.

R.J. K: Yes, very well. Just keep your crashes under 30mph, the Givi bars are designed to buckle. The skid plate gives very good protection and I will recommend it all day long. Aug 9, 2014

John B: I know it'll fit the 2014 new edition. I'm 99% sure it'll fit the 2013. They didn't change the frame, so I can't think of any reason it wouldn't fit. Aug 9, 2014

A shopper asked: Will this product fit with the popular SW Motech crash bars on a 2104? Sep 26, 2014
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
John B: Not exactly sure as I installed them with the Givi. I won't try to change your buying decision (if you haven't already bought your crash bars) but the Givi bars have been very good. I literally LAUNCHED this bike and the bars held their own. Last weekend, the bike was on a paved driveway and rolled backwards and high-sided itself. The bars bent in but I was able to stick a crowbar in there and straighten them. Pretty happy with both purchases.

The skid takes the abuse and keeps on kicking. No regrets there. I wish they used a heavier gauge metal but it works great. I believe the skid uses the factory upper mounts, which in my case, the Givi replaced as part of their bars. If the SW product is the same, you might be in luck.
