AltRider Crash Bars BMW R1200GS Water Cooled

AltRider completely redesigned their crash bars for the R1200GSW. A step up from years past, they utilize 1.25“ (31.75 mm) O.D. stainless steel tubing making them the largest diameter bars on the market. The decision to increase the diameter came from years of research and production results. 1” bars (25.4 mm) allow a significant amount of flex during a crash, creating the need to space them farther from the bike. The stout 1.25” bars allow a tighter profile while still providing real protection. Available in shot peen satin or black powder coat finish, you’ll never have to worry about rust whether you’re crossing the highway or crossing a river.

The top of the bars are secured in a total of three locations per side. The front mount is the only one on the market designed to utilize 2 bolts per side to increase the ability to distribute the load of any impact. The rear is held with a custom machined through-bolt that replaces the engine mount hardware. There are no plastic spacers to break upon impact. This creates an incredibly strong design that distributes any impact evenly throughout the bars, and also makes a solid foundation for upper crash bars.

Another first for AltRider crash bars are the integrated 3/16” (4.76 mm) lower flanges designed to interface with an AltRider skid plate. This creates a modular protection system that doesn’t mount directly to the motor and is substantially more robust than anything else on the market. The AltRider BMW R1200GS Skid Plate (sold separately) attaches directly to the crash bars, distributing impact evenly throughout structure.

Installation is simple and straightforward. All necessary hardware, including a difficult to find T55 bit, is provided with the bars.

Many competitors for less money Based on my research, I felt comfortable that the AltRider crash bars would offer excellent protection for my GS. However, on my very first day with the bars, I attempted a slow (first gear) off-road ride. Unfortunately, I dropped the bike while on a gravel road and attempting a very slow speed turn at a stop sign. My dumb fault!! My new crash bars got scratched up, as expected, once they hit the gravel. Unfortunately, the cylinder heads that they were meant to protect also got scratched up. Perhaps the crash bars can't protect everything, but for $500, I expected that they would better protect my cylinders. There are too many competitors for $200 less. For the same money I could have purchased SW-Motech crash bars and also added cylinder protectors (like Machineart Moto X-Head for $189). So while I can only blame myself for the drop, and the cylinder guard is scratched, not broken, I just offer that other guards would have done the same job for less money. August 5, 2016
Looks great These things look the business. They are beefy but not chunky. I push my limits (which isn't very high), so I fall quite a bit. My first off with these crash bars on were one day after install! It was low speed in snow over hard pack gravel. The bars did their job and protected the bike; however, they sustained more damage than expected. Now I know that the bars are meant to give some, but I felt they gave a lot more than they should have. I have had more falls since then on the other side (arguably even harder), and those bars did not bend. When it's all said and done, crash bars are a necessity for me. If I had to purchase another pair it would still be these. I just wish you could purchase a single side instead of a pair though. April 12, 2016
easy to install protection Bolted on easily. BMW bolts can be a bit stubborn, a bit of WD40 seemed to help break them loose (thanks Jesse Luggage for the tip). I think they look good and are heavy duty, should protect the bike if it goes down. I have about 800 miles since putting them on a few weeks back and nothing has loosened up. Pic shows them installed along with Jesse Luggage bags on my 2015 BMW R1200GS. April 3, 2016

Fit perfect and super burly protection I tried a set of bars from a very well known German competitor and they fit awful (two sets actually and the second fit worse than the first). Frustrated they were returned and I ended up buying these. I wan't super pumped on the big 1.5" tubing just because I thought it looks kind of goofy but after seeing them in person, not a big deal. Fit on these is dead on. All the holes line up perfect - zero struggle. Added bonus, instructions are written in English, not ikea-style pictograms. I have zero doubt these bars will protect the heads in a crash. Access to valve covers is unimpeded so no need to remove bars to check valves etc. October 22, 2015
The bike is safer now. I didn't wait too long to buy the lower crash bars and skid plate as I wanted to start riding my bike in the dirt. I read about other brands and settled on these because the pure size and strength of the tubes. If you go to the AltRider website you can watch videos of how well they do in a crash. They are pretty neat. Installation on these was a pretty straight forward. I would recommend finding a video online (Adventure Rider forums) and watch it as well as use the instructions. It is pretty straight forward once you get a feel for what the end result is. The biggest problem I had on the GS was getting the engine bolt off with the supplied T55 bit. Do yourself a favor and buy a T55 driver and a breaker bar. Your life will be happy once again. Other than that it's straight forward. If there is a gripe about it would be the finish. I ordered the black and apparently while installing it I must have nicked something because it chipped the paint. I noticed it once it was on the bike so I wasn't going to take it off. Then after a few rides I noticed another one that is probably from a rock or some other debris. I don't expect these to be pristine forever and I know it adds character but I figured that would happen if and when I lay the bike down not from a 0.5 mph hit. I guess as long as they keep the bike safe then I'll keep being happy. Nothing that a sharpie or black paint won't take care of. Did I mention they are pretty bad azz. August 26, 2015
Built for a tank!!! Installed this along with the Alt Rider Skid plate on my '15 GS and it looks like it can withstand a bomb!! Have not crash tested nor do I want to but have no doubt that these things will protect my cylinder heads and valve covers. Great product. Neat thing is they double as highway pegs. Holds your legs in place on the cylinder head just perfect. August 18, 2015
Post-Install Review This review is only for the installation of the crash bars and skid plates which I bought and installed at the same time.... The install was very straight forward. There was a bit of very manageable prodding and prying to get holes to line up but that'll just put a bit more hair to your chest. GS's weren't built for the bare-chested anyhow! You'll need a set of torx bits if you don't already have them....but you'll use them many more times on this bike so that purchase shouldn't be a deterrent from doing it yourself. Face it, if you're installing crash bars, you're not only going to be installing crash bars. Torx-type fasteners are all over the bike so buy the bits and be done with it. As far as on the road, they don't interfere with the lean angle or add any road noise due to air flow that I can tell. They appear to be well constructed and plenty beefy. Great product....which I hope I never use. But if I do, I'll update this post. May 22, 2015
