AltRider Crash Bars BMW R1200GS
Generally speaking, not a bad install. You may have to grind a socket to tighten one of the recessed nuts. That said, the OEM bolt at the top mount has marginal threads left exposed after the thickness of the bar's mount tab takes up some space. I called the mfg. The rep agreed to tell Engineering about it, though I wasn't convinced that he was really going to. He gave me some rationale that they were afraid the engine would drop out of position if they had the user replace the bolt. Sheesh, folks have been using jacks/wood blocks/bricks/... to hold things in position during repairs since the day after the wheel was invented.

Better than OEM protection
I purchased these crash bars because of obvious shortcomings in the factory bars on my 2009 R1200GS Adventure. More protection was required. I looked at several examples at the 2014 MOA and settled on the AltRider version. All of the products that I looked at had at least one compromise, and the AltRider was no exception. There is a definite interference with the gas tank on the right side. The pictures do not show this interference well. I didn't like it so I cut and re-welded mine. This is not for everybody but I have the equipment and the experience. Too bad they don't make a separate version for the GSA. I guess economics win out over practicality. I would also like to have seen an updated video of the installation. The bars I received do not match the ones in the video - this was actually a pleasant surprise as they are better. No more 2-piece attachment at the bottom - way to go. Additionally, the video/instructions should mention that the "splicing bar" must be coated with some sort of anti-seize compound as the galvanic corrosion tendency between aluminum and stainless steel will make it impossible to remove if this is not done. A much better solution would to have made the splicing bar from stainless steel, eliminating this possibility. Again, economics are in play. Overall, I would recommend these bars but be aware of the compromise(s) you have to make.

This is a nicely finished product. I just completed the install so I can't review crash-ability yet but some comments on the install: relatively straightforward but loosening the upper cross-frame bolt required a buddy to hold one end while I laid into the other with quite a bit of torque; also I used a ratcheting tie-down strap to compress the front suspension (between the top triple-clamp and the axle) to get the needed clearance for that upper cross-frame bolt. The fit of the bars to the mounting spots was good, everything lined up well. I hope I never have a crash-ability review for you.

Great product, easy to install.
The Altrider crash bars for my 2006 R1200GS installed in about 1.5hours by myself. No issues. Think they will perform well.

Average product - still room for improvement
The product was packaged well and received in perfect condition. During installation it was discovered that the four flat head screws for the crossbar were missing. After trying to call Altrider twice on a Friday evening at 5:30 pacific time, hoping to have the missing screws overnighted, I gave up and went to the hardware store.
Installation was easy and pretty straight forward. The newest revision is slightly different than what is shown on Revzilla's installation video. The loose pieces for the lower mount points were actually welded and incorporated into the design.
The design looks to be able to better take a fall to the right than to the left side of the bike. The upper mount on the right side of the bike only rests around the large upper bolt head. There is a small T30 bolt that maintains the position of the upper mount. A fall to the left could possibly break or pull this small bolt out of the aluminum engine body. This would just depend on how much the bars twist when hit from the side.
The color red is close but not identical to the factory BMW red on the 2012 1200gs rallye edition bike. Unless you are looking for the color difference you would never notice. Overall I am giving this product an average rating. I am not rating performance or durability since I have not had the bike go down yet. There is room for improvement but should perform halfway well.

The engine bar fit very well & looks great
The engine bars looks great, I chose the red finish to match my 2012 frame & fits like an original BMW part. All needed hardware is included & instructions are very goo. Very pleased thus far.

Good looking and Beefy
The crash bars were fairly easy to install. They are very solid and well made. I went with silver bars on my Blue 1200gs. Not sure if they have to be removed in order to remove the valve covers.

The bars fit as described.
The bars fit as described and the shipping was fast and free.
I only had to buy the T30 head as I had everything else in the tool box. It took about an hour and a half to install the unit and everything fit as per the instructions.
I haven't tried it out and I don't want to but I'm sure that they will work very well if I tip over.
