AltRider Crash Bars BMW R1200GS

The BMW motor is powerful yet wide, and you want to protect every inch. Wrap that 1200cc gem with our 1 inch stainless crash bars. AltRider set the bar high on this product. Durable and well engineered, the AltRider crash bars are built with precision-manufactured mounts that fit directly into the existing motor mount. Also, integrates well with the AltRider Upper Crash Bars (sold separately), for even more crash coverage.

By utilizing the R 1200 GS’s robust frame mount and incorporating the existing frame hardware, AltRider designed a quality piece that will protect your motor.  Unlike other crash bars, these do not use flanges or weak tabs and are not hung: they are actually mounted. Made with a shot peen satin finish means that even when the bike takes a spill, the stainless bars will never show signs of rust.

These crash bars deflect the impact from the cylinders and engine case to the strongest parts of the frame. Unlike other manufacturers, our design provides plenty of clearance around the vulnerable left oil line. It also serves double-duty as a boot rest on long rides!

Save yourself hassle and frustration – and the purchase of a $200 valve cover – by installing AltRider crash bars.

Take a moment to review the instructions. The reason we mention this here is to make you aware which mount points on the R 1200 GS have strength.

  • Stainless construction fights corrosion and rust
  • Hand TIG welded crash bars are 1 inch diameter for additional strength
  • Manufactured in America
  • Refined satin peen finish
  • Comes with the Torx bit needed for installation
  • Removal required for valve adjustment

Better than OEM protection I purchased these crash bars because of obvious shortcomings in the factory bars on my 2009 R1200GS Adventure. More protection was required. I looked at several examples at the 2014 MOA and settled on the AltRider version. All of the products that I looked at had at least one compromise, and the AltRider was no exception. There is a definite interference with the gas tank on the right side. The pictures do not show this interference well. I didn't like it so I cut and re-welded mine. This is not for everybody but I have the equipment and the experience. Too bad they don't make a separate version for the GSA. I guess economics win out over practicality. I would also like to have seen an updated video of the installation. The bars I received do not match the ones in the video - this was actually a pleasant surprise as they are better. No more 2-piece attachment at the bottom - way to go. Additionally, the video/instructions should mention that the "splicing bar" must be coated with some sort of anti-seize compound as the galvanic corrosion tendency between aluminum and stainless steel will make it impossible to remove if this is not done. A much better solution would to have made the splicing bar from stainless steel, eliminating this possibility. Again, economics are in play. Overall, I would recommend these bars but be aware of the compromise(s) you have to make. November 17, 2014
Installation tips This is a nicely finished product. I just completed the install so I can't review crash-ability yet but some comments on the install: relatively straightforward but loosening the upper cross-frame bolt required a buddy to hold one end while I laid into the other with quite a bit of torque; also I used a ratcheting tie-down strap to compress the front suspension (between the top triple-clamp and the axle) to get the needed clearance for that upper cross-frame bolt. The fit of the bars to the mounting spots was good, everything lined up well. I hope I never have a crash-ability review for you. October 6, 2014
Great product, easy to install. The Altrider crash bars for my 2006 R1200GS installed in about 1.5hours by myself. No issues. Think they will perform well. May 26, 2014
Average product - still room for improvement The product was packaged well and received in perfect condition. During installation it was discovered that the four flat head screws for the crossbar were missing. After trying to call Altrider twice on a Friday evening at 5:30 pacific time, hoping to have the missing screws overnighted, I gave up and went to the hardware store. Installation was easy and pretty straight forward. The newest revision is slightly different than what is shown on Revzilla's installation video. The loose pieces for the lower mount points were actually welded and incorporated into the design. The design looks to be able to better take a fall to the right than to the left side of the bike. The upper mount on the right side of the bike only rests around the large upper bolt head. There is a small T30 bolt that maintains the position of the upper mount. A fall to the left could possibly break or pull this small bolt out of the aluminum engine body. This would just depend on how much the bars twist when hit from the side. The color red is close but not identical to the factory BMW red on the 2012 1200gs rallye edition bike. Unless you are looking for the color difference you would never notice. Overall I am giving this product an average rating. I am not rating performance or durability since I have not had the bike go down yet. There is room for improvement but should perform halfway well. The engine bar fit very well & looks great The engine bars looks great, I chose the red finish to match my 2012 frame & fits like an original BMW part. All needed hardware is included & instructions are very goo. Very pleased thus far. September 24, 2012
Good looking and Beefy The crash bars were fairly easy to install. They are very solid and well made. I went with silver bars on my Blue 1200gs. Not sure if they have to be removed in order to remove the valve covers. June 9, 2012
The bars fit as described. The bars fit as described and the shipping was fast and free. I only had to buy the T30 head as I had everything else in the tool box. It took about an hour and a half to install the unit and everything fit as per the instructions. I haven't tried it out and I don't want to but I'm sure that they will work very well if I tip over. Great protection, but why didn't someone warn me!?!?!? 1st off, I did not rate the "performance" or the "durability" of this product seeing as I have just installed them (just 100 miles riding with them) & neither have I "tested" these crash bars! Did my home work, review ALL the crash bar choices, and decided on these due to look (especially that they are black & few others off that color), quality, and fit/protection. As a bonus, these crash bars are made in America! Install was straight forward, though requires 2 people AT LEAST to install -- plus some tools that I didn't have handy & had to buy (mostly ratchet extensions & the like, fairly short $). NOW THE WARNING... I installed the crash bars after work, while having a few beverages w/ my brother. In the AM, much to my surprise, the bars looked to be crooked! I checked all the mountings for fit & tightness and found all as it should be. I measured & sure enough, the crash bars were significantly closer to the left engine head! No time to take them off, I rode to work w/ plans of writing AltRider an angry email re. poor construction quality... then I noticed that the bars were straight, it was the ENGINE HEADS that are crooked. Apparently, I had missed that my beloved boxer engine is WAY off symmetrical -- due to design! I've since gotten over the asymmetry (not a lot of that to be found on the GS anyway) and love the bars in both looks & perceived protection. May 13, 2012

RevZilla Store asked: Why did you choose this?
Garrett G: I watched the video reviews and compared the AltRider bars to Touratech bars fellow riders have. These are more expensive but I believe they are made better and are designed to be stronger, not that I plan on dropping my bike. Nov 24, 2014
Randy V: Since the OEM crash bars on my 2009 BMW R1200GS Adv. are, for the most part, decoration I wanted a crash bar system that would allow me to use my bike as it was intended. The AltRider crash bar system impressed me when I saw it at the 2014 MOA Rally. I'm confident that I'll finally get the protection I've been needing since the machine was new. Thanks Revzilla & AltRider. Oct 30, 2014
David Y: Best protection for a crash. Cons of AltRider: must remove before valve lash inspection. The time taken to remove the crash bars is worth it for the protection. HB crash bars tweek after a couple crashes. TT bars don't cover the entire cylinder head. Any protection is better than the stock crash bars. Mar 5, 2014
WILLIAM T: like the build made in usa altrider service is very good Mar 4, 2014
Alan M: After extensive research I determined the Altrider crash bars made the most sense for GS protection. Feb 23, 2014
Trevor F: A high quality crash bar which also fits with the OEM aluminium cylinder head protectors already fitted to my bike. Jan 27, 2014

OldManRick: The specs on the AltRider website have been updated to "Fits 2005-2011"

Unless there are undocumented changes in the 2012 BMW R 1200 GS, the crash bars should fit.

[And whoever heard of Germans not documenting changes?]

A shopper asked: I want to purchase the 1200GS crash bars in silver. Some of your photos show the older style Altrider bars for this bike while others show the latest style with the beefed-up lower mounting points on a single 1/4" thick plate. Can you guarantee that I will receive the latest style bars if I purchase in silver or triple-black? Nov 2, 2013
