AltRider Crash Bars BMW R1200GS

The BMW motor is powerful yet wide, and you want to protect every inch. Wrap that 1200cc gem with our 1 inch stainless crash bars. AltRider set the bar high on this product. Durable and well engineered, the AltRider crash bars are built with precision-manufactured mounts that fit directly into the existing motor mount. Also, integrates well with the AltRider Upper Crash Bars (sold separately), for even more crash coverage.

By utilizing the R 1200 GS’s robust frame mount and incorporating the existing frame hardware, AltRider designed a quality piece that will protect your motor.  Unlike other crash bars, these do not use flanges or weak tabs and are not hung: they are actually mounted. Made with a shot peen satin finish means that even when the bike takes a spill, the stainless bars will never show signs of rust.

These crash bars deflect the impact from the cylinders and engine case to the strongest parts of the frame. Unlike other manufacturers, our design provides plenty of clearance around the vulnerable left oil line. It also serves double-duty as a boot rest on long rides!

Save yourself hassle and frustration – and the purchase of a $200 valve cover – by installing AltRider crash bars.

Take a moment to review the instructions. The reason we mention this here is to make you aware which mount points on the R 1200 GS have strength.

Features:

  • Stainless construction fights corrosion and rust
  • Hand TIG welded crash bars are 1 inch diameter for additional strength
  • Manufactured in America
  • Refined satin peen finish
  • Comes with the Torx bit needed for installation
  • Removal required for valve adjustment

Generally speaking, not a bad install. You may have to grind a socket to tighten one of the recessed nuts. That said, the OEM bolt at the top mount has marginal threads left exposed after the thickness of the bar's mount tab takes up some space. I called the mfg. The rep agreed to tell Engineering about it, though I wasn't convinced that he was really going to. He gave me some rationale that they were afraid the engine would drop out of position if they had the user replace the bolt. Sheesh, folks have been using jacks/wood blocks/bricks/... to hold things in position during repairs since the day after the wheel was invented.

Great protection, but why didn't someone warn me!?!?!?
1st off, I did not rate the "performance" or the "durability" of this product seeing as I have just installed them (just 100 miles riding with them) & neither have I "tested" these crash bars!

Did my home work, review ALL the crash bar choices, and decided on these due to look (especially that they are black & few others off that color), quality, and fit/protection. As a bonus, these crash bars are made in America!

Install was straight forward, though requires 2 people AT LEAST to install -- plus some tools that I didn't have handy & had to buy (mostly ratchet extensions & the like, fairly short $).

NOW THE WARNING...
I installed the crash bars after work, while having a few beverages w/ my brother. In the AM, much to my surprise, the bars looked to be crooked! I checked all the mountings for fit & tightness and found all as it should be. I measured & sure enough, the crash bars were significantly closer to the left engine head! No time to take them off, I rode to work w/ plans of writing AltRider an angry email re. poor construction quality... then I noticed that the bars were straight, it was the ENGINE HEADS that are crooked. Apparently, I had missed that my beloved boxer engine is WAY off symmetrical -- due to design!

I've since gotten over the asymmetry (not a lot of that to be found on the GS anyway) and love the bars in both looks & perceived protection.

Great product, easy to install.
The Altrider crash bars for my 2006 R1200GS installed in about 1.5hours by myself. No issues. Think they will perform well.

GS Crash Bars
I am very impressed with the AltRider bars on my '09 GS. They installed easily as the directions were straightforward and clear. They are manufactured to very close tolerances so make sure to have everything in place before you begin to torque things down.

One drawback is the need to remove the bars for a valve adjustment. However, I will swap that extra thirty minutes for the additional protection these bars offer.

Great looks and fit
I have not needed them yet ,but am confident they are well designed.I think they are the best looking and fitting bars on the market.

The bars fit as described.
The bars fit as described and the shipping was fast and free.
I only had to buy the T30 head as I had everything else in the tool box. It took about an hour and a half to install the unit and everything fit as per the instructions.
I haven't tried it out and I don't want to but I'm sure that they will work very well if I tip over.

Good looking and Beefy
The crash bars were fairly easy to install. They are very solid and well made. I went with silver bars on my Blue 1200gs. Not sure if they have to be removed in order to remove the valve covers.

Best mounting points available in R1200GS crash bars
I replaced a perfectly good set of Hepco Becker bars with the AltRiders because of their mounting points. On the Rider's left, the Hepco Beckers (and others) use an 8mm(?) bolt for mounting which threads into a welded captured nut on the oil line cover. On my bike, the captured nut broke free, and I had nothing to mount the bars to anymore. The AltRider bars use an primary engine mount bolt which provides a much sturdier platform for mounting/crashing. The only issue I ran into was that the nut on the engine-mount bolt was on there pretty TIGHT, and I took 2 breaker bars and a prayer to initialy get it loose. The bars are a great product, and the the extra 'popout' at the front edge is great for hooking your heels into as highway pegs.

I watched the video reviews and compared the AltRider bars to Touratech bars fellow riders have. These are more expensive but I believe they are made better and are designed to be stronger, not that I plan on dropping my bike.

Since the OEM crash bars on my 2009 BMW R1200GS Adv. are, for the most part, decoration I wanted a crash bar system that would allow me to use my bike as it was intended. The AltRider crash bar system impressed me when I saw it at the 2014 MOA Rally. I'm confident that I'll finally get the protection I've been needing since the machine was new. Thanks Revzilla & AltRider.
Randy V on Oct 30, 2014
Best protection for a crash. Cons of AltRider: must remove before valve lash inspection. The time taken to remove the crash bars is worth it for the protection. HB crash bars tweek after a couple crashes. TT bars don't cover the entire cylinder head. Any protection is better than the stock crash bars.

like the build made in usa altrider service is very good

Hi,

Can you confirm for me whether this is the current updated version of the Altrider crash bars? Specifically I want to know if these in black are the 2nd version of the crash bars. I believe Altrider modified the design in 2013.
Joon K on Jul 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I believe they are the latest version, although the ones I bought are sliver. They are fitted to my 2012 "Camhead" and certainly look good. You can always ring AltRider and talk to them if you have any other specific questions. I did, before buying them through RevZilla.
Will the alt rider crash bars fit a 2012 GS? The specs only list 2005-10
A shopper on Jan 5, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The specs on the AltRider website have been updated to "Fits 2005-2011"

Unless there are undocumented changes in the 2012 BMW R 1200 GS, the crash bars should fit.

[And whoever heard of Germans not documenting changes?]
Will these crash bars fit a 2011 R1200GS?
A shopper on Dec 3, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Yes they will I have them on my 2011 GS, I think they are the best crash bars on the market!
Can you please verify that this is the most recent revision of this Altrider upper crash bar that fits the Adventure tank (will be installed on a 2009 BMW GS Adventure)?
A shopper on Mar 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not sure.
The one I had purchased last year was a single inverted "U" shaped piece
I want to purchase the 1200GS crash bars in silver. Some of your photos show the older style Altrider bars for this bike while others show the latest style with the beefed-up lower mounting points on a single 1/4" thick plate. Can you guarantee that I will receive the latest style bars if I purchase in silver or triple-black?
A shopper on Nov 2, 2013
BEST ANSWER: If you don't believe revzilla, don't do business with them.I have no problems and would highly recommend Revzilla .Their customer service is great.
I have a 2010 R1200GS with the BMW aluminum valve covers. Are the Altrider engine guards compatible or do I have to remove the BMW aluminum covers?
A shopper on Jul 22, 2012
BEST ANSWER: Yes, we can confirm from AltRider that the Crash Bars for the BMW 1200GS are compatible with BMW OEM plastic and aluminum cylinder head guards
Will you be carrying the full catalog of AltRider gear for the new XT1200Z Super Tenere? I just picked mine up and need to outfit it and would prefer to buy from Revzilla as you are local to me.

Thanks!
A shopper on Aug 5, 2011
BEST ANSWER: Just plug in "XT1200Z" to our search bar. We have quite a few AltRider products for this bike.
