AltRider BMW R1200GS Crash Bars

The BMW motor is powerful yet wide, and you want to protect every inch. Wrap that 1200cc gem with our 1 inch stainless crash bars. AltRider set the bar high on this product. Durable and well engineered, the AltRider crash bars are built with precision-manufactured mounts that fit directly into the existing motor mount. Also, integrates well with the AltRider Upper Crash Bars (sold separately), for even more crash coverage.

By utilizing the R 1200 GS’s robust frame mount and incorporating the existing frame hardware, AltRider designed a quality piece that will protect your motor.  Unlike other crash bars, these do not use flanges or weak tabs and are not hung: they are actually mounted. Made with a shot peen satin finish means that even when the bike takes a spill, the stainless bars will never show signs of rust.

These crash bars deflect the impact from the cylinders and engine case to the strongest parts of the frame. Unlike other manufacturers, our design provides plenty of clearance around the vulnerable left oil line. It also serves double-duty as a boot rest on long rides!

Save yourself hassle and frustration – and the purchase of a $200 valve cover – by installing AltRider crash bars.

Take a moment to review the instructions. The reason we mention this here is to make you aware which mount points on the R 1200 GS have strength.

  • Stainless construction fights corrosion and rust
  • Hand TIG welded crash bars are 1 inch diameter for additional strength
  • Manufactured in America
  • Refined satin peen finish
  • Comes with the Torx bit needed for installation
  • Fits 2005-2010
  • Removal required for valve adjustment
  • Note: Not currently compatible with Two Brothers or Remus header.

1st off, I did not rate the "performance" or the "durability" of this product seeing as I have just installed them (just 100 miles riding with them) & neither have I "tested" these crash bars!
Did my home work, review ALL the crash bar choices, and decided on these due to look (especially that they are black & few others off that color), quality, and fit/protection. As a bonus, these crash bars are made in America!
Install was straight forward, though requires 2 people AT LEAST to install -- plus some tools that I didn't have handy & had to buy (mostly ratchet extensions & the like, fairly short $).
NOW THE WARNING...
I installed the crash bars after work, while having a few beverages w/ my brother. In the AM, much to my surprise, the bars looked to be crooked! I checked all the mountings for fit & tightness and found all as it should be. I measured & sure enough, the crash bars were significantly closer to the left engine head! No time to take them off, I rode to work w/ plans of writing AltRider an angry email re. poor construction quality... then I noticed that the bars were straight, it was the ENGINE HEADS that are crooked. Apparently, I had missed that my beloved boxer engine is WAY off symmetrical -- due to design!
I've since gotten over the asymmetry (not a lot of that to be found on the GS anyway) and love the bars in both looks & perceived protection.

Had the H&B bars previously. Wrestled with those to get them on and they just didn't hold up to any abuse. Although I had some wrangling to do to get the AltRider bars on, they are far more durable and will last.

I replaced a perfectly good set of Hepco Becker bars with the AltRiders because of their mounting points. On the Rider's left, the Hepco Beckers (and others) use an 8mm(?) bolt for mounting which threads into a welded captured nut on the oil line cover. On my bike, the captured nut broke free, and I had nothing to mount the bars to anymore. The AltRider bars use an primary engine mount bolt which provides a much sturdier platform for mounting/crashing. The only issue I ran into was that the nut on the engine-mount bolt was on there pretty TIGHT, and I took 2 breaker bars and a prayer to initialy get it loose. The bars are a great product, and the the extra 'popout' at the front edge is great for hooking your heels into as highway pegs.

I am very impressed with the AltRider bars on my '09 GS. They installed easily as the directions were straightforward and clear. They are manufactured to very close tolerances so make sure to have everything in place before you begin to torque things down.
One drawback is the need to remove the bars for a valve adjustment. However, I will swap that extra thirty minutes for the additional protection these bars offer.

Answer:
The specs on the AltRider website have been updated to "Fits 2005-2011"

Unless there are undocumented changes in the 2012 BMW R 1200 GS, the crash bars should fit.

[And whoever heard of Germans not documenting changes?]

Will you be carrying the full catalog of AltRider gear for the new XT1200Z Super Tenere? I just picked mine up and need to outfit it and would prefer to buy from Revzilla as you are local to me.
