Akrapovic Slip-On Exhaust BMW K 1200 R / S

The muscular K 1200 R in all its glory. As the naked version of the sporty S model it also displays sporty elegance and top-notch design. We have developed an Akrapovic SLIP-ON exhaust system for riders who want to make a slight alteration to the bike’s looks and performance with a minimum modification. The system fits beautifully with the strong character of the BMW. It has been developed in an open version and is not approved for street use.

K1200S Performance

The system shows its effects on engine performance mainly at the top of the rpm range, which can be seen clearly from the power and torque curves. At 10100 rpm we measured over 150 HP, with the max. increased power of 7.4 HP coming in at 7600 rpm, which is also the point where the max. increased torque is delivered.

K1200R Performance

Despite the excellent performance of the stock machine, the Akrapovic SLIP-ON manages to add both power and torque. The increase in power can be seen in the low end between 2000 and 3000 rpm, and then from 5400 rpm right to the top of the range, where the engine responds the most to the new exhaust. Max. power of 159.2 HP is measured at 10230 rpm, and max. increased power of 7.2 HP is shown at 7760 rpm. The torque curve for the Akrapovic SLIP-ON shows a similar response.

NOTE: Please check local laws before purchasing. Some modifications may be prohibited in some states.

Is this awesome? No.....it's AWESOME!!!!!! First, thank you to the Revzilla staff member who came up with the answer! I am no wrench monkey by any means, the install of the slip on was so easy the most difficult part was being patient and waiting for the stock muffler to cool off so I could put the new one on. The changes that ocurred when the Akra stock was installed were noticeable right off the bat. The sound, the stock exhaust was quiet and seemed as if it was not allowing the bike to reach its full potential. The Akrapovic slip on has a very rich deep tone to it. It sounds 100 times better and has definitely turned some heads. The looks are also fantastic (I got the carbon fiber) and definitely adds a sleeker and sportier look to the bike, no more giant silver cannon barrel!!! The increase to the performance of the bike is also very noticeable. The engine feels way way way smoother when accelerating and you can definitely feel more power coming out of the engine as well. All in all it is a purchase that I will be happy with for quite a while. August 24, 2012

Stock the K1200S has 163 horsepower, if what Akra says is true then it should be running at 170 max HP.........Why does the graph show 150? Did they change the horse to a Clydesdale or something?

Answer:
It appears as though BMW advertised a claimed horsepower of 167 bhp @ 10,250 RPM for the K1200S that year. 'BHP' is short for "Brake Horsepower", the way engine manufacturers typically measure engine output. Effectively, an engine dyno is hooked up directly to the flywheel of the engine, and output is recorded - in this case, 167 at the stated RPM.

Engine dynamometers are typically an expensive too. They are much less affordable and portable than wheel dynamometers, which is why they are far less commonly seen. Engine dynamometers do not take into account necessary driveline losses. That is a measurement of the engine output through the rear wheel, which takes into account friction from the gearbox, driveline, stator, wheel, and tire, among other things. If you were to take the 167hp BMW engine off the engine dyno, install it in a bike, and put that bike on a wheel dyno, you would see an immediate power loss. A generally accepted figure is 15% loss from BHP to RWHP. In this case, 167 minus 25.05 (15%) yields 141.95 - right in line with Akropovic's test bike. Given that very bike varies - even bikes of the same year, make, and model - Akropovic's numbers look very realistic.
