AGV Pista GP Carbon Fiber Helmet

The AGV STANDARDS project, established in 2009 with Valentino Rossi as its leading rider, is ready to get on the track with the first AGV PistaGP helmet. The Pista GP sets new performance standards with its wide field of vision, low weight and compact dimensions, extensive ventilation, exclusive ergonomic design and class-leading aerodynamics.

Development of the Pista GP began by taking measurements of riders’ heads with a digital scanner. These measurements were then used to design the helmet from the "inside out".  It is based on the “Human Engineering” concept and applies to a new design process which starts from the components that are in direct contact with the head and gradually progresses to the outer shell.  As a result, the structural shapes imitate the area of contact thus providing greater safety and smaller dimensions.  AGV EXTREME STANDARDS HELMETS use FEM (Finite Elements Analysis) to set new standards in safety, comfort and ergonomics.  In addition to new levels of safety, the AGV Pista GP sets new standards in environmental protection with the raw materials and new technologies used in production having a focus on low environmental impact.

"I consider the PistaGP helmet to be a homage to Gino Amisano, an enterpreneur I admired for his ability to innovate, for the standards he set and for the competitive spirit he had when he faced a challenge. The new helmet is based on AGV Standards, the project that follows Amisanos core values and revolutionizes helmet development, setting new standards for protection and ergonomics that can be demonstrated. The new generation of helmets developed through this project has the task of bringing AGV to lead again in both the market and the technical field." - Lino Dainese

Technical Highlights:

  • The residual impact force transmitted to the head is reduced by 36% compared to the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The HIC index is 48% below the limit established by ECE regulations.
  • The basic visor movement area has been reduced by 71% compared to the GP-Tech helmet. This allows use of the space saved to increase the thickness of the absorption material, benefiting safety.
  • The visor is Class 1 optical standard approved for excellent vision.
  • The field of vision is 15° wider and the overall visor window area has increased by 9% compared to the previous helmet, without compromising its level of protection.
  • The Z-Lift index has been reduced by 44% after wind tunnel tests.
  • The air intakes have almost tripled in size, whereas the entire ventilation system of the PistaGP helmet removes heat and moisture very efficiently. The padding has a 3D concave structure, which is preshaped according to the morphological characteristics of the head, while the surfaces in direct contact with the head are free from stitching for guaranteed comfort.
  • Thanks to its "from the inside out" design, the structural components of the helmet are designed to provide the required performance while minimizing size and weight.
  • The frontal cross section has been reduced by 3% and the lateral cross section by 6% compared with the GP-Tech helmet.
  • The fit of the PistaGP helmet, covered by three patents, provides an extraordinary high level of comfort and adaptability to different shapes, unknown up to now.

Features:

  • 4 shell sizes
  • Carbon Fiber Shell
  • IVS (Integrated Ventilation System) with wide ducts hollowed into the shell
  • Removable and washable inside padding
  • Hygienic treatment of the comfort padding
  • Breathable Lycra micro-porous lining and Dry-comfort fabric with sanitizing treatment  using CoolMax fabrics
  • Double D retention system
  • XQRS (Extra Quick Release System): shield replacement without tools in few seconds
  • RACE 2 flat, non-scratch visor with wide field of vision, ready and suitable for tear-off strips (sold separately)

Terrible Quality Control but a Potentially Great Helmet
I have a love / hate relationship with AGV and purchasing this helmet has been no exception. So far I have purchased 5 AGV helmets, all of which have had quality issues. This one has disappointingly followed suit which is totally unacceptable for a safety product, especially a flagship model such as this. AGV helmets have the potential to be great when they get it right which is why I keep trying them but quality issues really impact confidence in a product.

The first Pista Carbon I purchased had frayed, messy carbon fiber seams under the clear coat and had scuffs, etc in several areas. It should never have left the factory. The second helmet had a visor which was jammed closed. Having now fixed this myself I decided to give it a chance on the road. Here's my findings...

THE GOOD:
Compact, light and good looking. I hate when manufacturers use the same shell size for several head sizes. Invariably this leads to "bobble head" syndrome for slim people like me and probably doesn't help with aerodynamics, buffeting, neck pressure, etc. There's no such problem here as they use a different shell size for each head size. It feels and looks like it was made specifically for me.

Very good safety ratings. The road going version, which is of a similar design as the Carbon, received a 5 star SHARP score which is even better than the Arais I have been wearing for years. That's really the most important feature.

It slices through the air like no helmet I have had on every bike I ride. Although it is always referred to as a helmet for the track and sportsbikes, in my experience this helmet performs in any street scenario too. It worked very well on my S1000RR but, surprisingly, on my completely unfaired BMW Nine T, there is no buffeting whatsoever and the chin curtain really directs the air around that area better than sport touring helmets I have tried. Ventilation is decent but not as noticeable as I imagined and nowhere near where it needs to be around the visor. Plus, it's either on or off when you are riding as it uses a rubber plug system to control air flow.

Vision is superb. The best of any helmet I have tried. The eye port provides great forward and lateral visibility, even in the tuck position. The visor changing system is a welcome relief after wrestling with the hit-and-miss Arai solution for years and the safety latch, designed to prevent it opening in a crash, is useful for cracking open the visor for a little extra airflow which you will really need (see “ THE BAD” below). The visors themselves are absolutely incredible. Thick and optically extremely clear. The visibility from this helmet is like going from standard definition TV to widescreen HDTV.

Removal and reinstallation of the liners, cheek pads, etc is easy although the manual could explain this better. There are plenty of spares available. There are a lot of customization options to get this helmet to fit you just right (see below).

THE BAD:
Aside from the poor quality control (which is inexcusable for a premium helmet) there are a few niggles I have with this product. First and foremost the visor release is a little difficult to engage with gloves on. Enlarging the button a little and raising the profile of it slightly would be enough to make it easier to locate and release.

It’s noisy. No big deal. Everyone should be wearing hearing protection when they ride anyway and AGV supply this in the box in the form of 3M earplugs. I like these better than the speciality Auritech ones I purchased from the UK.

The visor mists very easily. Either the breath guard is not effective enough or the air flow needs dramatically improving in that area but I get misting all the time. With all the vents open it will mist up even in dry 80 degree summer weather even when in motion. I adjusted the helmet fit to no avail. With my Arais I only experience misting in the depths of winter and when at rest.

Also...be aware that the customization available on this helmet can turn it from a torture device into a great helmet with adjustment of the foam plugs and velcro pads. I didn't last 15 minutes around the house before the hot spots started and I developed a headache. I nearly gave up on it. Then I finally read the manual :-) After slight adjustment it is comfortable for longer periods. I still have not found a configuration which gives me all-day comfort yet so I am somewhat disappointed in that aspect. I need to be able to ride several hours to the track, be comfortable on track and ride home again without any distractions from a helmet. Hopefully with wear it will conform more to my head shape. I only mention this as I usually pull on a helmet and it fits or doesn't fit. This one doesn't work like that out of the box.

This part is purely subjective but I'd really also like to comment on the AGV paint schemes. The company seems to have three options; no paint, bland generic designs and Rossi replica schemes. The most beautiful helmet they should have made was the Rossi Pista GP minus the Rossi graphics. The tech data overlay was so cool but the "46" a step too far for me. We all love Rossi but I stopped putting my heroes posters on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager and I feel the same about motorcycle gear. How about some more imaginative, original designs? The plain carbon looks incredible but it could do with a few tasteful, non-Rossi flashes to make the rider more conspicuous on the road (in a Dainese-esque Rosso Fluoro perhaps to match the leathers?). How about a hi-viz version of the clear rear spoiler for road use?

BOTTOM LINE:
AGV - please tighten up on quality control. That this is your flagship helmet and it ships with obvious defects is a disgrace.

Potential purchasers - if you head is even close to the ideal shape for this helmet and you want super light, customizable, five star SHARP protection and the best forward vision in a helmet, this should be on your list to try.

Revzilla - you guys are the best in the business.

Pricey, but worth it
My head measures 60cm and the L fits me absolutely perfect. It's a little more snug than my Shoei GT Air but not in a bad way. This helmet honestly feels like it was custom made for my head. The aerodynamics are incredible; there's nearly no buffeting at all which significantly cuts down on neck fatigue after riding longer distances, the weight of course helps in this area as well. I'm extremely happy with this helmet and actually considering buying a second. It's so hot in Florida my sweaty head tends to stink up helmets fast if I wear them everyday, I think a second may be in order so I can rotate them and air them out a bit. If you're on the fence about this helmet just go for it, it's worth the money.

Sexy, light helmet
The helmet looks hot, that goes without saying. The best parts of this helmet consist of the weight (barely any), and the wide vision it allows (wider than any other helmet in my arsenal, to include Arai, HJC, and other AGV). Fits like a glove, one of my favorite helmets to don.

Pista GP Carbon- Everyday User
When I was looking for a helmet I was dead set on getting a carbon fiber. Best looking helmet out there. I was initially very hesitant on pulling the trigger because of the price, but I absolutely love my helmet and would purchase again. I was also hesitant because most of the people whose reviews I read only used this particular helmet at the track and I was wanting it for everyday/casual street use. However, every other helmet I thought about buying just didn't compare to this one.

Protection- The first time I came across this beauty was reading a post from another person who purchased it and raved about how it saved their life, compared to other helmets that rider has owned. I, myself haven't been in that situation thankfully, but I take their word for it.

Comfort- It fits how a helmet should. Pretty snug if you get it in the right size. Kinda a struggle when I put earphones in, but its a racing style helmet. I sat around the house with it on to break it in, but mostly because I was so excited to have it. Breaks in very nicely, I don't get headaches from hot spots. Best advice is if you're worried about the helmet sizing go to a local shop and see if they have any AGV helmets and find your fit.

Style- Its so sleek. Best looking helmet I've seen. Very aerodynamic of course it's made by the best. If you are the type of rider who wants to ride with their face shield up this is not the helmet for you. After a certain speed it slams shut, but its not hard to reopen even with gloves on in between lights. I get compliments all the time.

Weight- crazy light, when I got my box it was so light I couldn't believe my helmet was in there. It doesn't feel like a bowling bowl on your head and doesn't push your head back during high speeds.

Vision- The vision is great, you can see out of your peripherals. Not a problem to see around you at all.

Noise Level-Noise level isn't the best but you have to remember it's a helmet designed for the track. I like the sound of my exhaust, but if I'm on the freeway at high speeds and have headphones I can't hear them very well. Headphones= City streets yes, freeways and higher speeds no.

Airflow- I think its fine. The helmet has these rubber removable things to add air flow. I live in a hot state so I just keep mine off. I also keep my shield slightly open so I don't feel so trapped in there and can breathe. Button is easy access, fogging only happens if I haven't cleaned it which is easily avoidable.

Overall, yes it is pricey. If you have the chunk of change to buy it you won't regret it. Very smooth looking, super light weight, protects the noggin, vision is great. I totally recommend. If I had enough I would back another one right now. Worst case scenario, Revzilla has an awesome return policy and fast shipping so buy it wear it around the house, and if you hate it send it back. Don't regret buying another helmet when you really wanted this one for just a little bit more.

Well worth the money paid
I've been riding bikes for a lot of years now, and I have to say this helmet is awesome. It took a little bit of work to adjust it to fit perfect. But once it was all done ( you can fine tune these helmets ) it fits and feels great. Very quiet helmet. Vet very light and little to no drag when turning head from side to side doing highway speeds and over.

My head size was 61mm. I got the XL , it was rather tight at first, but after wearing for about 2hrs ( 1 wk) it was true to fit.
airflow was great ,there are adjustments in the head liners ,but it wasn't necessary ,styling and looks are stunning.

Is this helmet DOT approved? I don't see the label on the back of the helmet, but the video made it seem like it was.

BEST ANSWER: DOT approved, 5 star SHARP rated. Good enough for Valentino Rossi, good enough for me! :)
Can I wear a Bluetooth device in this helmet?
A shopper on Aug 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have seen one for sale on eBay that had a Sena mounted on the left side, but my AGV manual suggests against opting a Bluetooth add-on as it wasn't designed for the snug interior of this. This could be for legal purposes, but if folks have already done it (and surely, they have as it's been seen), then it's certainly not impossible.
AGV Pista GP Carbon Helmet:

Are the AGV emblems removable or permanently clear-coated onto the helmet?

What is this anti-fog pin-lock and does it come with the helmet?

What shield colors are available from Revzilla for this helmet?

Does the helmet come with a protective soft case or bag?

Thanks!

im just brought this size of xxl. and its weight is heavy and nearly 1.7kg. why it is weight big different between xxl and ms(1.3kg)?
Duncan D on Jul 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: AGV makes 5 different shell sizes for pista's. bigger shell=more material=more weight.
Has the misting issue been resolved? One of the reviews states states it mists easily even under dry conditions.
Ivan M on Mar 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Never had a "misting" issue. I purchased mine the day it became available here on reveille, and It's been my daily rider now for over 6 months and the only time I would have a little fogging was only at a standstill while in sub-40 degree weather when I'm wearing my thick fleece baklava which seals off the whole bottom of my helmet and all my vents are closed/plugged. Even then all i have to do is crack open the visor where it's still locked just not the furthest down/sealed and I am fine. Or I just wait to ride off and before I am in 2nd I am back to having a crystal clear HUGE field of view again. Honestly. Even if this helmet had microclimates inside of it where it would thunder and lighting and you would get torrential rain inside of ur helmet. It would still be the best helmet out there. I absolutely love this helmet and use it everyday comfortably. Best helmet by far. And the guys at revzilla are the heat so if u get the sizing wrong or what not they are awesome to do business with. Hope this helped
i bought a size ML it is my size but my cheek hurts after 10mins of wearing it so i decided to bought a replacement cheekpads i got the large on but still hurts my cheek im just asking if im going to get a size XL for liner and cheekpads does it fit the ML shell of my pista gp?
Mark Von S on Dec 21, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The previous answer is the same as mine i just wanted to reinforce the point. This helmet is no joke and it grips on to your head like a vice. It was a little uncomfortable at first but now that it's broken in it's amazing. I've never had a helmet that allows me to move my head around with out it feeling like the wind is pulling jerking me around.
Where is this helmet made? My Agv K3 SV is made in China.
JoshB on Jul 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I just got one of these for my birthday last month; quality is top-notch, made in Italy.
The helmet has a cleat plastic air deflector around the side and rear of the helmet. Is this to reduce drag, noise in the helmet or something else?
Michael S on Apr 23, 2015
