For $100 ?? WOW !
First Impressions :

For starters, coolest looking helmet I've ever owned. Looks real good in flat black. Ordered it on a Friday, showed up on Monday, super fast shipping !

I bought this primarily for use with my KTM 525, but I think I may start using it for my daily commute as well. My daily lid is a Shoei X12, about 6x the cost of this one, which is insane. Today was my first ride in my FX39, I figured I'd take it out on the freeway riding my 636.

Things I noticed right off the bat :
- Amazingly light ! Feels like half the weight of my Shoei
- Very good ventilation. Far more breathable that my Shoei (a plus for me, perhaps not for you if you live in a colder climate). Plus it's got a plethora of vents you can open and close.
- Visibility - very good peripheral visibility. I didn't notice any distortion either.
- Comfort - Surprisingly comfortable, especially for a first ride. It fits nice and snug, but not too tight. Padding is more plush than my Shoei for sure. It should break in perfectly. Usually I don't have such good luck with helmet fit. My Shoei is a medium, I got a small in my FX39.. so it seems they run large? Something to consider.
- Quality - It's light, but sturdy. Doesn't feel cheap. If someone handed me this helmet and asked me to guess a price, I'd assume at least $250-300.
- The quick release strap is a nice bonus as well :)

As for noise level, it seemed average to me. I wear earplugs almost all the time, so noise isn't much of a factor. Besides, is any helmet really "quiet" at 80+mph? I took my FX39 just over 100mph with zero issues. Visor stayed shut, helmet stayed centered on my head.

For a hundred bucks, this thing is amazing. I've owned a few sub $200 helmets and they've always sucked, not this one though. I've also owned a few $500+ helmets. My X12 definitely feels higher quality, but I dunno about 6x the price higher quality.

All in all I think this will work out well for what I bought it for, perhaps even better than expected :). Durability of course remains an open question, but hopefully one I'll never have to find the answer to !

Great DS Helmet
Using the fit chart, my helmet was perfect. Oh, sure, it’s tight and about rips my ears off on removal. It goes on easy and once on, causes no pain. The visor is simple and well designed. The cheek pads are made for an emaciated refugee, not the pulchritudinous faces of us overfed Westerners. Following the advice of a previous reviewer, I clamped the removable cheek pieces between a pair of large books overnight and they were more manageable next day. Fogging is easy to achieve until out of the slipstream of a windshield. Low speed dirt riding suggests standing on the pegs, so the fogging is not an issue there. I applied a thick coat of Op Drops (which I use on the inside of safety glasses in competitive shooting sports) to the inside of the visor. Fogging (even in the rain) is now not a problem. The quick release strap works flawlessly. Noise at speed is about what I would expect from any helmet. These lids are well made and well designed. I’m very happy I bought it. I think I’ll order one for my best friend (my wife)………She claims she wants to ride 2-up.

Nice helmet
Helmet fits great. Vision is very wide. Vents work well. This is my first helmet so I didn't 5 stars as I haven't tried any other helmets. There is room for the Sena SMH10 or the SMH5 Intercom. I haven't mounted the units, but had fitted the Speakers and Mic in the helmet at the bike shop. When the AFX FX-41 DS becomes available I will buy one.

Good AFX.

Cool Factor!
I was looking for a helmet that had a cool factor and something that was different. This helmet was perfect. For under a $120 you can't beat this. I got it in matte black, added a sliver shield and it looks Sweet!
Looks is a A+. Helmet feels sturdy. Air flow through vents is good.
My only cons are its a loud helmet and the MX peak at times starts to lift the helmet, but I don't think this helmet was made for the freeway blasting in the 1st place
Overall I love this helmet. I will be ordering another for sure.

Excellent value, great features, very comfortable
This is a great deal on a very nice helmet. Fits well, much the same as my last Icon. Nice liner, face shield has very good optics. I really like the quick release chin strap. Venting is better than a full face street helmet, as expected. I dont think you will get much more helmet for the higher premium that other brands sell for in this style.

Fantastic Helmet
I had the AFX37 and really liked it, then I had the Joe Rocket DS helmet and liked that as well... but this 39 is on a whole other level in every respect. The fit is very comfortable, it's lighter than the 37, there are tons of added vents so airflow is excellent, the shield has little to no noticeable distortion, it has a breath guard and doesn't fog up. With all the vents it is a bit noisier than the previous model.

I honestly think this helmet kicks the Joe Rocket DS helmet's butt, and it's about $50 cheaper.

Note on the fit - My head measurement fell between a small and a medium, and because some people said it runs small (customer service) and others said it runs large, I ordered both to try them on. The small was just too small on the crown of my head and actually hurt a bit, and seemed too small in terms of the 'height' of my head as well (my chin stuck out a bit). The medium fits comfortably and snuggly, though I could possibly use larger cheek pads. The breath guard does just barely touch my nose, but nothing ridiculous.

Good For Dualsport Riding
There are lots of good reviews for this helmet so here are my three gripes:
1. The optics of screen are not perfect, it is very slightly wavy. I suppose if you spend $500 you would expect it to be perfect. It's only slightly noticable so I hope I can ignore it over time. I plan to use goggles most of the time anyway, the screen for long distance road.

2. The screen is not easily removed so it gets dusty offroad and then when you want to use it for on road you have to clean it. Would be nice if you could pop it off like a good street helmet and stash it in a pack, bring it out when you need it.

3. The chin strap is set far enough back that it could be choking to some users. It's barely okay for me. The quick buckle mechanism is easy to use even with gloves on so that's a plus. All helmets should have these.

Otherwise it's a great helmet, comfy, does not buffet like my symax. Goggles work with the screen up or down.

It does run a half size big so consider that when you order. The Fly Trekker is the same helmet with a different interior and runs true to size so if you're in between that's a consideration. I'm always between a M and L, the Trekker L was too big but the FX M fit perfectly. Don't forget you can use a spoon and compress some foam anywhere there's a slightly tight spot, like on your forehead.

Good performance for the price
I got this as my first dual sport helmet. Fits nicely and I really like the look. Unfortunately after 3 months of use, I was involved in a road accident when a car cut across me in a junction. Broke my hand, had abrasions and bruises all over, whiplash injury and sprained my knee. Thanks to the quick release and fit, paramedics were able to remove my helmet without much problems and pain. The helmet did not have any visible structural failure; only scratches on the impact site. Today, my hand still needs therapy but the helmet looks like it can be used again. I will definitely recommend this and may get the same one again.

pros
- nice design
- fits nicely
- comfortable
- visor is optically correct and things look clear
- good ventilation in tropical climate

cons
- heavy
- shell looks huge on the head
- a tad noisy

You wont find better helmet for the price
I bought this dual sport helmet for riding in Miami with my street bike and airflow is fantastic. I was not expecting it will be that good. All the vents are close-able. Was riding in humid hot day while raining, no leaks through visor and it even was not fogging with all vents closed. Amazing!
As mostly it is sunny here - silver tinted shield (it is as dark as in between light smoke and dark smoke) is perfect.
I will bring it back to North Europe at the end of the year and will be using it with my cross bike, ATV and even extreme snowboarding (On the side of the road behind the car) - so this helmet wont be just Dual sport - it will be Multi-sport I guess! :)
I did a huge research to compare with Fly Trekker and I found AFX better.
Also chin strap is so convenient - quick release, works perfect.
Fits my head really good. I wear L and I bought this helmet also Large.
Helmet is little loud but I always use in-ear earphones so riding is comfortable.
One last thing thou - I dont think you can find better deal than this - considering quality, comfort, look and in how many sports you can use it.

very cool, very comfortible
great helmet feels very comfortable and offers amazing visibility! washable liner for it is just brilliant and all the vents can be used with one hand while riding and the strap is very comfortable and very easy to use even with gloves on, can be a bit noisy but nothing that is distracting but has lot of room around the ears for adding a bluetooth communicator. i advise using the plastic tool that comes with it to lower the top of the helmet so that the wind doesn't catch your helmet or push it back, but all in all an amazing helmet.

Overall value was very high. Cost is very low compared to other helmets in 3XL (I know, thick skull). I already took a dive off my KTM 690R and went face first into some large rocks. First thing to cross my mind as I picked myself up was "D__n glad I was wearing a helmet". I can buy 2 more of these for the price of the next costlier helmet.

Based on the video and helmet info. Best bang for my buck and I can buy additional items for my bike with this one than with the Aria or Shoei. I have a Shoei for the street and love it, but with the large wind screen on the GS I'd rather have the air flow. I also like the idea of allowing the goggles fitting under the shield, it's two for one! Yay I win!!

Just purchased a 2012 F650GS and wanted an dual sport style lid. The video review was excellent for an entry level helmet. Also, I have a SHOEI Qwest and the replacement shields are $80!! Eighty bucks for just the shield? SHOEI should be ashamed of themselves to charge that much. The video product reviews on Revzilla are incredibly helpful!

is fx-39 or fx-41 best choice? im an off-road guy but i ride my klr650 daily to work (1hr each way) in atlanta...and its cold and occasionally wet. presently just use my motox helmet and goggles but want full face with shield. need to stay under $200 and like sun-visor on fx-41. recomendations?
A shopper on Dec 16, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The helmet is great we live up in Oregon were the temperature drops dramatically and I haven't had any problems. Good luck and have fun I think it is a great helmet under 200
How is the visor wind (sound and vibration) compared to other dual sport helmets in this price range?
Lane M on Jan 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I took the visor off mine. Catches too much air for me. Instead I got a tinted windscreen overlay. It works well but I do find that a visor would be nice now and again. If I were riding more on and off trail on outings, and keeping my top speed under 50 mph or so and for short bursts, I would probably keep the visor on. I don't recall the visor vibrating at all when I did have it on. Can't speak to the noise, but I would guess that any visor is going to increase that a bit.
How hard is it to put glasses on and off with helmet on? I generally wear a modular or flip-up helmet but really want to try one of these AFX helmets.
A shopper on May 3, 2011
BEST ANSWER: It depends on how wide and square the corner of your glasses are. The helmet padding is designed to hug your cheeks comfortably. I personally use Nike wrap-around (sun)glasses with straight temples, and they are comfortable but snug. If you have regular eyeglasses, I would honestly recommend contact lenses, as helmets properly fitted are desiged to absorb impact energy from the impact point to your helmet. If you go loose enough to comfortably fit eyeglasses, you might be loosening the helmet and working against the protective intention of it. You never want a loose helmet, especially god forbid you take a tumble.

Also, the FX-39 helmets run slightly large, so I had to downsize to a Medium after I purchased my normal large size.
Is there any kind of tear off kit for this helmet? Or maybe an universal kit that fits the helmet visor? Thanks in advance for your replies...
A shopper on Oct 16, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Don't know of one, but it works well with goggles (can even get the shield down over the straps)
If my head measures 59.5 cm, do I get a medium or large sized AFX FX-39DS?
A shopper on May 25, 2011
BEST ANSWER: My head measures 59-60cm and I was hoping that the Medium would fit me. Alas, no...it was too tight. I exchanged it for a Large and it fits really well.
This helmet looks really great but I am concerned with my ability to change the visor during a ride. Do you need a screw driver just to change the visor? Is it something that could be done on the side of the road? Being able to change from a tinted visor to a clear one at night is crucial for me. Thanks.
A shopper on Apr 26, 2012
BEST ANSWER: You need to remove three screws using the supplied plastic screwdriver tool to take the peak off, then remove two rings from either side of the visor to remove it (I found I needed needle nose pliers to do this), before popping the rings back in either side of the new visor then replacing the screws/peak etc. I found I needed to sit down somewhere to do this properly and it would take me about ten minutes. You have to be careful not to lose any bits while you're doing it too. A pain in the *** pretty much.
What are the Pros and cons of a matte black finish on the AFX FX-39? Is it true matte black is harder to keep clean and blemishes easier?
A shopper on May 26, 2011
BEST ANSWER: That is a bit of a controversial question. Some say it is more difficult to keep clean. As someone who owns a couple of matte black helmets as well as a matte black superbike I would say the finish is no more difficult to KEEP clean than any other helmet. To CLEAN one of these helmets is actually a little bit easier than other helmets since you DO NOT use any chemicals to clean the surface. simply use a warm, wet wash cloth and thats really about it (sometimes some none abrasive soaps to get rid of bugs). no coating it anything like water repellents or solvents. my helmets are kept immaculate. No scrubbing = no scratching.
Can I purchase extra visors for the AFX FX 39 DS? Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: Yes, here's a link to the product on Revzilla http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/afx-fx-39-faceshield. I have the silver mirrored faceshield along with the original that the helmet comes with. The mirrored one is okay, but up close you can see it's not make with the best quality. What are you going to do about it though? The helmet comes with a tool to take off the beak and change the faceshield if you want. The screws are plastic so the beak will break off in a crash and won't snag and break your neck. Use the tool on the screws because a metal screwdriver might damage them. Otherwise, swapping is pretty easy.
this may seem like a silly question, but my question is how hot does it get in the helmet? I am thinking about buying this helmet to use as a bicycle helmet. i have a motorycle and can use it a passenger helmet, but i figure i can use this for riding my bicycle as well. I figure riding my bike i probably wont get faster then 20 or so MPH so i was wondering about the heat in the helmet at a standstill or slow speeds. im not trying to put a sweatbox on my head. i figure nice bike helmets go for about $60+ so why not check out a helmet i can use for both motorycle and bike riding. thanks.

BEST ANSWER: I didn't think it was a silly question until you said you might wear it on a bicycle. I'm a cyclist myself and I would definitely not wear this on my bicycle because it's much heavier than a normal bicycle helmet. Among motorcycle helmets it's not too heavy, but it pales in comparison to any bicycle helmet. But to answer your question, it has pretty good airflow even at low speeds especially with the visor up. I rode with it in 90+ degree weather recently and even at slow urban speeds or at lights the heat never bothered me. Unless you're planning on serious accidents, I wouldn't recommend it for bicycling. I ride a Specialized Allez Compact Sport and a Ducati Monster just FYI.
I currently have a Shark Evoline 2 Medium which fits well. What size would be equivalent for FX-39?

BEST ANSWER: My second AFX DS helmet (37 & 39), the fit of the 39 is much better being more oval than round but I find the AFX sizing chart completely wrong for my head/face features. My head measures 61cm, upper end of large per AFX, I found though that teh XL is too tight, creates a pressure point after an hour on the forehead, so 2XL which is what I wear in AFX (DS), HJC (dirt & street), and Bell (dirt), Take into consideration if you wear a balaclava etc.
