A popular and promising young motorcycle racer lost his life in a street crash last night.
Dane Westby, nicknamed "the wolverine," died after his bike hit a curb and crashed into a wall and a pole in Tulsa yesterday evening.
A friend told roadracingworld.com that skid marks at the scene make him think Westby was trying to avoid another vehicle. Police told a local television station they don't know yet if other vehicles were involved.
Westby recently got some attention for riding his bike from his home in Oklahoma to Daytona Beach, Fla., to watch the Daytona 200 during Bike Week. No big deal? He rode his bicycle from Oklahoma to Florida. All part of his plan for getting into top condition for this year's MotoAmerica series.
At the recent preseason test at the Circuit of the Americas, Westby was the fastest rider in the Superstock class of the MotoAmerica series.
If one of the best motorcycle riders in the United States can be lost in a flash, it can happen to anyone. Be careful out there, people.
